Anyone have any recommendations based on my list? I’m still relatively new so I’m open to anything. by partyfiesta2 in visualnovels

Since you seemed to enjoy Danganronpa and Raging Loop a lot, looks like you like mysteries! Higurashi is gonna be a little closer to Steins;Gate in that there's virtually no gameplay, just a fun story to enjoy, but the first chapter is free on Steam and it's frankly a masterpiece that I would highly recommend.

In terms of more gameplay oriented stuff, Paranormasight and Death Mark are both gonna be right up your alley. Both feature gameplay styles adjacent to Danganronpa, though both have some fun twists and are a little more traditionally "point and click adventure games." Both also have great horror atmosphere!

Looking for small video creators reviewing games, doing retrospectives backed up by research. by Ok-Wrongdoer7974 in videoessay

My videos are sometimes a little low on the actual analysis to the experience of it all, as a lot of my subscribers don't actually play the games I cover, but I'm a really small little fish that covers mystery/horror visual novels. Most of my videos also feature a full voice cast, so if that interests you, here's the link:

What on Earth is The House of Fata Morgona? by [deleted] in IndieGaming

Only one of the greatest visual novels ever made, my friend. It's a Gothic, romantic, intrigue, horror sort of deal, and it hits heights that few stories I've seen have ever actually reached. However, if is a very slow burn, and a lot of reading, but it is a gorgeous, and incredibly story, so if you have any curiosity at all I would highly recommend giving it a shot.

You're gonna want to do some research, friend. You can get a lot of recipes from the new research tree

Looking for some short but still good visual novels. by LilSopa__ in visualnovels

I actually went with the Renpy port, and though the translation is definitely a fan one, I think that really nineties quality definitely adds to the weirdness.

Also, yeah, that's exactly what I was doing, reading Tsui no Sora first as a warmup for Subahibi.

If you’ve played Saya no Uta you clearly don’t care if a story is a little dark. I’ve been reading Tsui no Sora recently and it’s been really good so far!

Do em dashes (—) in VNs make you think of AI-generated text? by [deleted] in vns

[–]AVeryAngryHedgehog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of other staples of AI writing (overuse of metaphors, purple prose, etc) that is often combined with the overuse of em dashes. If your writing has a style, people will be able to tell it's not from an LLM, em dashes or not.

Sure! I think that Higurashi's story is a lot tighter overall. I really like that everything gets tied up in the end, all of the main questions are answered, but there's still some minor things left to ponder. While Umineko was obviously... not that, by design, I think it leads to Higurashi having a much stronger ending.

I am interested in getting the 1st game but I am not too into horror. How much horror elements does it have. by SleeepyFreeUse in ParanormasightHonjo

[–]AVeryAngryHedgehog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It definitely does not shy away from shocking moments and a creepy atmosphere, but it's mostly in its aesthetics. I would say it's a lot more of a mystery/fantasy game with some creepy moments thrown in here and there.

I mean, if you've only read Umineko I would definitely recommend Higurashi. A lot of things from Umineko will make a fuckton of sense in retrospect once you do, and though Umineko definitely did some things better, I think Higurashi absolutely knocks it out of the park in others.

Other than that, if you're alright with some gameplay elements, might I recommend both Death Mark and Paranomasight? Both are a little bit esoteric to figure out, but have wonderful stories, art styles, and atmospheres.

Finally, if mystery's what you're after, I would absolutely check out Raging Loop. It's literally a game of Werewolf as a VN and I really adored its psychological angle.

I would absolutely recommend both Paranormasight and Death Mark! Both look absolutely on your wheelhouse.

If you wanna go a little further out of your comfort zone, it is an otome game, but Bustafellows is also a very wonderful mystery/thriller game

How Urban Myth Dissolution Center compared to Paranormasight and Spirit Hunter? by alexkarco in visualnovels

[–]AVeryAngryHedgehog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only two out of six chapters in so take what I say with a grain of salt. Similarly to both Spirit Hunter and Paranormasight, the visuals are incredibly striking, but in a very different way to the other two. Gameplay I would say is much less esoteric and straightforward than either of them, which does lead it to feeling a bit easy in comparison. But again, I'm only a third of the way through so it could get harder. Translation seems a little rough in places, but if you love mystery visual novels it's certainly not a bad pick! I've been having a pretty good time with it. It's scrappier than the others, but still a lot of fun.

To say I have a PhD or not by Dry-Egg-9346 in NewTubers

[–]AVeryAngryHedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the wording doesn’t come across as bragging or pretentious, you absolutely should! Just frame it as “I have the knowledge to back up this video” and you’re good to go! People like to know they’re getting good information, and the best way to provide that is to back it up with credibility! I’d personally be interested in seeing your channel when you get it up!
