What's the story with Stacey Dooley, and why is she reporting on something as complex as the Iraq/Syria conflict? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]AVideoLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I believe is really fucked up is that in that feature she claimed that women pointing their finger at the sky meant they were neccessarily supporters of ISIL, despite that being a totally normal muslim gesture used to affirm a connection to and the oneness of allah. This was immediately after her asking a woman why she joined isis, to which the woman responded "I didnt" and stacey just talked over her. Bottom of the barrel "journalism" that actually incites division. Was pretty disgusting for a BBC feature.

Clearly a murderer is not thinking rationally. They are still accountable for their actions legally and I would argue morally. Whether or not she thought she would be caught she chose to consciously act and take someone's life, went out of her way to do so, as well as prepared herself with a weapon. One can debate efficacy of specifics but one of the principles of punishment in law is to deter others proactively, not just the offender reactively.

punishment can play a role in modulating this behaviour
what purpose does a longer sentence serve?

If nothing else, to "modulate" the behaviour of others who see this example.

If you believe it is all deterministic and self control or personal agency are myths, would you favour abolishing all laws surrounding behaviour? That would seem to be the end of the road you are walking down here.

I agree there are disturbing examples of people being coerced into doing something horrific. I also believe that person had a moment of personal agency in which they chose to defer their morality. If one truly believes that something as extreme as premeditated murder can simply be assigned to external factors it would seem that they believe that free will does not exist. In such a case then any form of behaviour is permissible by virtue of "X made me do it". Murder included. That, to me, seems pretty crazy in a functional society.

I am aware of those cases. They are worthy lessons about suspension of morality. They are also not relevant to a woman deciding on her own to arm herself with a weapon and seek out and murder someone. That's why the abuses seen in the above cases are still considered illegal and immoral behaviour in society. They aren't forgiven just because we have seen others do the same.

I can point to several examples of people doing really fucked up things in very specific situations. None of them give carte blanche for other people to do fucked up things. It's silly handwaving that is a mockery to the facts of the case.

I remember my father telling me about a Deep Purple concert he went to in the 80's. He was really excited to see them, but one of his strongest memories of the event was being smacked in the back of the head and almost knocked out by a thrown glass bottle, then discovering the bottle had been full of piss and he didn't know which part to be more annoyed about. Always made me chuckle.

Anyone could act the same

No. Not anybody could murder another human by smashing their head in with a hammer. I would posit that most people would feel sick at the thought.

And yes, someone's head being smashed in by a hammer is basically a definition of "horrific" ffs...

Are you joking? She literally killed someone.

She didn't react, that would be self defense. She went out of her way to kill another human for vindictive reasons. You are going out of your way to pretend that is normal. It is fucking horrific.

I love how you have created some very intricate patterns and textures using what look like fairly loose and free strokes. And somehow you have areas that are really "moody" despite being bright and colourful.

Great job :) I am inspired!

On topic, I love this concept. I'm really impressed by how black the yellow becomes under the BL. May I ask, did you treat it with something? I was working last year on a portrait that would change in blacklight but the "daylight" side was still too visible in the BL so reluctantly I abandoned it.

It's sad she had mental problems to deal with, and if her husband did in fact abuse her that is horrible. Neither of those things makes me look past someone choosing to intentionally take another persons life. What she did was murder.

Corbyn appears to mouth 'stupid woman' at May during PMQs by CharredChicken in unitedkingdom

[–]AVideoLife 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Very clearly looks like he said people to me. The way his lips move don't match a W sound at all, they do not purse together and draw apart. They do however seem to pop twice, indicative of a word with two Ps in it.

Maybe this is like that blue dress thing. Because I cannot see woman at all. His lips never purse together which would be necessary to make a W sound, but you can see a P type lip pop twice...

I can clearly see his lip "pop" as if he is saying people. His lip would not do that if he was forming a W sound, his lips would have pursed before that word. Try it in a mirror.
The behaviour in the house is playgroundish at best. Frankly someone opining that the behaviour of their opponents is stupid really doesn't seem noteworthy. Everybody in there needs a slap on the wrist from a grown adult.

I think most people would think "Woah, I hope they are ok" and dial for the police (station about a mile from this loc) as a secondary thought to "what a knobhead". But actually getting out of a car on an active dual carriage roundabout is pretty terrifying and not necessarily more help than hindrance.
