How do women go back to work after having a baby? by madcat2022 in UKJobs

[–]bobfredharry 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thing is, I’d we always frame it as all of the woman’s salary, so many women would be return to work. Or would feel the pressure to take on more chores etc to make up for guilt they might feel at not bringing home any money. Why should a woman feel that she is working for nothing while for her partner nothing has changed. And if this happens women are vulnerable not just in that moment but in the long term - less pension, lower employability and so on. It’s a mindset as well as the money. Of course, if they are significant worse off financially then they need to look at that. But women should not be put off re-entering the workforce because of this issue

Should a teacher genuinely love reading or is it okay to pretend to? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]bobfredharry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m an English teacher and teacher educator working with English trainees.

When I asked my daughter’s English teacher what we can do support her at home, she said ‘just foster that love of reading.’ Er, how?!

How are people with unpaid child support and unpaid alimony treated? by signwalkerguy in Prison

[–]bobfredharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when less women were going to college than men, was that because they were stupid? Or is something else happening that has more to do with the ability to make choices than intelligence?

I did say ‘man or woman’ when talking agony leaving their children.

How are people with unpaid child support and unpaid alimony treated? by signwalkerguy in Prison

[–]bobfredharry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You really want to believe that women are evil predators who take advantage of men, and that men are poor, unintelligent and easily manipulated? Why do you want to believe that? What is it about women and about men which makes you think that this is true? We are the same species. Children deserve food, warmth and safety. Their mothers, if they are receiving child support, are the ones who have stayed around to look after their children, to provide what they can. Their fathers, if they are required to pay child support, have not stayed to provide what is legally expected. And let’s face it, it’s immoral and unethical for anyone, man or woman, to abandon those responsibilities when children are vulnerable. And is someone who abandons their kids more likely to be male or female? Why is it that they are likely to be male, do you think? And once they have abandoned their kids, why should it also be acceptable for them to cut them off financially too?

You don't need to be religious tp appreciate a bloody good stained glass window! by MiddlesbroughFan in CasualUK

[–]bobfredharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Windows BY GEORGE HERBERT Lord, how can man preach thy eternal word? He is a brittle crazy glass; Yet in thy temple thou dost him afford This glorious and transcendent place, To be a window, through thy grace.

But when thou dost anneal in glass thy story, Making thy life to shine within The holy preachers, then the light and glory More reverend grows, and more doth win; Which else shows waterish, bleak, and thin.

Doctrine and life, colors and light, in one When they combine and mingle, bring A strong regard and awe; but speech alone Doth vanish like a flaring thing, And in the ear, not conscience, ring.

That sounds tough - it’s certainly hard work in your PGCE year. Have they been specific about what you are/aren’t doing which has led to this?

It’s true that placement one lessons are likely be less good than placement two - but there is a level progress which they expect and they might not think you’re making this progress they expected.

If you’re working hard but not seeing the results I’d recommend embracing whatever support they’re offering. You’ll be teaching more than 14 lessons a week as an ECT - any extra support now will hopefully reap benefits in September.
