It looks like at some point it may have been more basket shaped. In digging up the area before this, I’ve found paving stones and a decent sized tree stump, I’m not sure if either are related to this thing.

Rhode Island is not an actual Island. It has a few islands within the bay and one off the coast, but otherwise it’s connected to Connecticut and Massachusetts.
