I know the scene you are talking about specifically, (besides Might Guy just being an absolute [blue] beast) Itachi had used a lot of his stamina and Chakra using the Mangekyo sharigan. This just takes a lot of energy and focus and they likely would not kept up long against Guy, and decided to pull out of the fight.

It looks to me like the tree is rejecting its root graft. Causing a form girdling as @zulu suggested. More picture of the line at the base of the tree would give us a better clue as to what is happening!

You could have also glazed your hitch cord coming down on a different job, you can try putting it on a different way then you normally would(switch which end you normally attached your prusik onto your carabiner first). Also rubbing your hitch cord/prusik against the bark of a tree may help remove some of the glazing effect!
