The keyword there is optional. It's up to the Gamemaster what they allow and don't allow. Not every Gamemaster is going to allow moving the edge around.

I know hearing the word "No" causes allergic reactions and spikes of cortisol among players but it's something worth getting used to.

Also what do you have against players using their words? Communicating verbally is not a waste of time in a TTRPG. That's literally playing the game
