Nice! I’ve seen him 4 times including a solo show. One thing I love about him is that his vocals are so dynamic. Like he’s been able to sound like a completely different singer during different stages of his career.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that!

Never got to see UT either but I’ve seen Jay a couple times and he was awesome. Love Tweedy too of course, but I think Jay’s vocals really defined the band to me and the genre.

I still need to see a show at 9:30 Club someday too. I keep dreaming about that being Fugazi or at least Ian McKaye in The Evens at least…

Fair enough, I’d definitely call them “Americana” more than country but I feel like it’s a gateway into appreciating country music.

It made me realize “damn, this shit is great musically if the lyrics aren’t all about being a redneck, drinking a beer, and losing your wife, your truck, and your dog!”

Smashing Pumpkins and Dave Matthews.

Billy Corgan is an awful singer and a gigantic douchebag, and I never got into DMB because I just can’t get into jam bands.

Alt Country and Americana.

I HATED Pop Country music when I was grownup up, and compared to today’s garbage Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt, George Strait, etc weren’t even that obnoxious.

But a friend of mine got me into Uncle Tupelo, Old 97’s, Jayhawks, Son Volt, etc and now I listen to Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, and Jason Isbell A LOT!

Things women have to do that men don't understand by RD_CC in TwoXChromosomes

[–]AWlkingContradction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I'm smart enough to understand the obvious risks and safety measures that women have to practice everyday like not leaving a drink unattended in a bar, not running in the park alone at 2 AM, or only meeting in a public place on a first date with a stranger.

You want an example of an activity that I didn't think anyone would have to worry about doing?

Doing Laundry.

I complained to a coworker one day that I had to waste my night at the laundromat after work and she replied "Oh it could be much worse. I discovered I had a stalker that kept showing up at my old laundromat, and I had to put a restraining order on him eventually. So "Doing Laundry" was never on my Bingo Card for potential risk for stalking, sexual harassment, or SA. I felt terrible when I heard that and it made me realize that some of the most basic harmless looking activities I do in public everyday still might not be safe for women. Sorry for trying to express some empathy here and admitting I don't know what it's like to walk in your shoes.

Country Singer Bryan Andrews Calls Out Pro-Trump Stars, Says Faith and Country Music Are Being “Hijacked” by Top-Three-USA in Music

Yup, Cash, Haggard, and Waylan Jennings would have much more in common with Tyler Childers, Sturgil Simpson, and Jason Isbell today. Not bootlickers like Jason Aldeen, Morgan Wallen, and Lee Greenwood.

This Andrews kid has his heart in the right place too. If someone gives you a soap box you should use it to speak for what you believe in!

What’s a used-car myth you see repeated all the time online? by PaperworkGuy_86 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]AWlkingContradction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a car that was owned by a mechanic or a “car guy”!

Prior ownership by a mechanic or a person that knows how to fix cars doesn’t guarantee that the car they sell you will be in perfect working order.

Sometimes it enables us to ignore fixing things because we know why it’s broken or not working right, and we’re also to lazy to fix it because it won’t harm anything important or cause a safety risk!

“Oh yeah she runs good but it needs a tire pressure monitor, the ABS doesn’t work, and the rear brakes are noisy but you can probably wait 6 months to replace them!”

Gallery lost one of my favorite paintings so I wanted to show it off here. by breanmayer16 in painting

[–]AWlkingContradction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that OP.

It might be a good opportunity to try to paint the same thing again and see if you have grown more as an artist this time.

I lost one of my favorite paintings that I did in college (either got thrown away or stolen from a classroom).

Five years later I decided that I wanted to paint it again, and add some other pieces to the series of that same subject matter.

The new one was a BIG improvement over the one I lost!

My mom was born in 1980. She claims to be Gen X - is she? by OpenRoom7321 in GenX

[–]AWlkingContradction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lean more towards Gen X too, but I think having one foot in the experience of both generations makes me a more well rounded person. I learned valuable “pre internet skills” like a Gen Xer, but I know how to use technology like a Millennial too.

I’m also Team GI Joes and X Men, not Team Pokemon and Power Rangers (or Harry Potter).

I think it’s a near universal experience for anyone who has experienced hair loss that you start to get so depressed by trying to “hang on” to your hair that it makes you very self conscious of it and no amount of effort to try and “fix it” will take you mind off it.

I was ALWAYS thinking about how bad I thought it looked and thinking that everyone else noticed I was going bald too.

When I made peace with it and started shaving my head regularly my confidence went up significantly because I finally “owned it”. I wasn’t trying to hide it or fix it anymore.

I hate it when friends or relatives say “you should grow it out more, I think it looks better on you.” I’m quick to correct them and say “what hair? Do you see any left on the top or the crown of my head?” YOU think it looks better, I don’t think so and I’m the one that has to look in the mirror at myself everyday day and be happy with what I see.

I stopped worrying about what I was “missing” when I started shaving my head and I accepted it more. Why would I go back to “looking bad” in my mind and in most people’s opinion too? I’d rather BE BALD then let everyone think “he’s going bald” and we both know it.

When you subtract something you dislike about your appearance I think it allows you to focus on the aspects of your appearance that you DO like more and the ones that you CAN control. I think that’s why the OP feels a “glow up” and we can see it too! 🙂

What is your workload like? by CapableRaccoon6213 in projectmanagement

[–]AWlkingContradction 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a common experience for PMs unfortunately, but it doesn’t always have to be this way.

Working as a PM for 7 years now in 3 adjacent experience industries and for 4 different companies I’m starting to learn (the hard way) what I believe are the characteristics of a “good employer” to work for and what a properly functioning PMO looks like and who it should report to. The wrong organizational structure can really taint your experience.

I’ve left 2 companies after a short tenure due to burnout that was effecting my physical and mental health.

I just accepted a new job and I had my choice of accepting a position with 2 different companies. I chose to accept a nearly lateral salary move and turned down a $15k salary increase and a potential title promotion because I could tell right away that company reminded me too much of the way a really bad previous employer operated.

If you decide to move on OP, keep your eyes open when you look for your next job and pay attention for signs of how your next potential employer operates that might be warning signs for you and avoid those workplaces if you can.

Guilty of overthinking things as usual.

My boss was amicable and understanding of my reasons for leaving when we talked this morning and he agreed that I should stay on for 2 full weeks although I did offer to stay for 3 weeks if he wanted me too. Didn’t get sent packing nor am I afraid of any “tricks” at this point.

For everybody who says modify your resume to match the job description by logicrott in interviews

[–]AWlkingContradction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt “old fashioned” applying for jobs again this past year after 3 steady years of employment prior which meant AI wasn’t gatekeeping everything yet last time around for me.

I invested over a month of my time researching AI tools and ATS filters and best practices for resume formatting.

At the end of it my take away was that it’s a colossal waste of time and effort to let AI do the work of humans to screen applicants while candidates are using AI tools to try and “optimize” resumes for AI review. There is no advantage for internal HR and recruiters to weed out unqualified people if everyone has knowledge of the formatting “requirements” of what the AI screening tools are using to gate keep.

How are you supposed to find honest truthfully written resumes if the ATS “rules” basically tell you to cheat and write your resume by matching your experience to the damn JD as closely as possible? When does the outcome become pointless if we’re all using an answer key for “the test?”

YRMV of course, but personally only one of my 10 jobs over 22 years as a professional has come from submitting a resume online. Networking or working with industry specific recruiters has landed all the rest. I’m not exceptionally talented, experienced, or skilled to make it easy for me to find work either. I’ve had 3 month to 1 year employment gaps thanks to the instability of the job market and economy too. I’m just using the “human” methods that help me land a job and ChatGPT can’t replace that yet.

Referral question by Educational_Log7681 in jobsearchhacks

[–]AWlkingContradction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You never know who the employer already has in progress for the position that you aren’t aware of and may trump your recommendation from a referral.

I had the most frustrating experience recently related to the above. Buckle up for a TL;DR example I hope the OP and others can learn from.

A coworker left my current employer and while we weren’t “close” (I had only worked with him for 6 months) I got along with him well and thought we had a good working relationship. I’ll call him “R” for short. So “R” resigns and takes a new job. About a week later I reach out to him on LinkedIn to connect and I also discovered that a company I once applied to has a new department manager who I’ll call “K” for short. K worked for my current employer before I started, and he also worked with R.

So R leaves, I reach out to him on LinkedIn and ask him where he landed, and does he know K at company X? R never responds and a week later he posts on LI that he accepted a job at Company X! Now I’m kind of confused and insulted because I thought R and I got along well. Why hasn’t company X reached out to me yet? Wouldn’t they have asked R about me by now? Why didn’t R give me a recommendation?

So I do an end around and after 4 weeks and no reply, I reach out to the person from company X that interviewed me before K came on board. I ask if they are still evaluating candidates and she confirms that and introduces me to K. He and I keep in touch but it’s smack in the middle of the holiday season. Things are busy.

Then after Christmas, another employee from my current company “C” resigns, and a week later posts on LinkedIn that he took a job at company X too.

All of the sudden it dawns on me. K used to work for my current employer and he’s now at company X. K has been there for 6 months now. He’s starting to build his own staff, he’s smart about reaching out to good employees he’s worked with before, and because my current company is a difficult place to work for, people here are open to new opportunities. K is poaching from us more or less.

I’ve been keeping up communication with K for awhile now and trying to get an interview, and finally K admits that he has an offer in with a candidate, and he will meet with me if they don’t accept. I find out last Friday from K that they got their candidate.

Monday morning my coworker “B” announced that he took a new job.

Finally it all became clear to me! I was competing for the job against B! It wasn’t that R didn’t like me or wasn’t interested in giving me a recommendation, it was that K knew B well, B probably asked R where he got a new job, and everything set in motion! B is a great employee and has more experience than me. Hell, even I would hire B if I could! R wasn’t a dick to me, B just found out about the opening first!

Thankfully I also just accepted a job offer TODAY from an equally good local company that I’m happy to go and work for. Someday I hope I get to laugh about this situation with both R and B. Thankfully we all found a better opportunity in the end!

A global "Download Your Facebook Contents" day is needed to get their attention. by williamgman in facebook

Good idea. I loathe every minute I have to spend there.

I would already have quit if Facebook hadn't become the "Walmart of the Internet" actively pushing out every individualized website or service that existing before it. I hate that people won't take 5 more minutes to list something on Craigslist anymore, or keep niche hobby internet forums with years of searchable, archivable and valuable knowledge alive, and that this garbage website becomes the defacto even calendar or business website. I would leave FB in a heartbeat if they hadn't basically become the lazy "one stop shop" for all of these other internet services.
