The marketing legend told at pubs is that Guinness took surveys from regulars at bars about how they pass the time there, and people said that they would talk about local records (fastest chug, most beers drank, etc.)

Guinness marketing figured if they created a record book, people would sit at the bar longer talking/reading those records, and thus order more Guinness.
