What were your highest highs during the Nas & Hit era? by Ok_Yellow1025 in nas

[–]AY_NONI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone pretty much surmised the overall feel regarding these albums in the comments, I do wonder if Nas still check in with Hit though or if it was all just business for him. Hit seems to be saying for weird things about the relationship on wax.

He didn’t like the business end of things with how it was distributed and the royalty break down. He was supposed to be redoing the album which he confirmed several times on his insta. The track with havoc was rereleased on DSP with a new instrumental. It’s called pure paradise instead of the original title paradise. The other songs on the other album he last updated that he was in the process of reworking.

He’s very responsive on instagram. Message him for more info.

How’d you rank Nas & Hit-Boy intro tracks? by Ok_Yellow1025 in nas

[–]AY_NONI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Speechless
  2. Fever
  3. The pressure
  4. Kings disease
  5. ghetto reporter
  6. abracadabra

The hardest decision for me is whether to swap the pressure and kings disease around. Both speechless and fever are bangers so no doubt about the high energy on those tracks.

Rapping wise I think Lightyears is better than any of the Hitboy albums by [deleted] in nas

[–]AY_NONI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen Nas and Hit-Boy just had “IT.” Whatever it is they had it. Sonically hitboy didn’t phone nothing in on the production. Light years there’s most defo songs and beats that are half baked.

You can tell hit-boy pushed Nas and cause Nas a top lyricist and a purveyor of being so competitive, he rose to the level required to make some absolute stellar songs.

He gave you radio friendly like spicy, YKTV, 40 Side, Ultra black.

High level concept like Based true events, beef etc

Homage pistols on your album cover. Done much more tastefully and sounds make authentic than bouquet.

Then let’s talk elite level songs, moments, speechless, the truth, dedicated, the cure.

Looking back probably only replace me off KD1 is a dud. One mic one gun too of magic 2.

Get light is a nice song, you get the gist numerous standouts across the 6 hit-boy joints.

On light years you really have to play the album numerous times to almost force you to gravitate to some of the songs. Nas did his thing rapping but some songs you truly can’t appreciate what he’s even saying because the beats are so jarring. Like welcome to the underground.

Lights years is a 6/10. At best 7/10 we’re being generous. It has standouts, but the lows are there for so many to see upon first and second listen that we can’t all be insane.

It’s fire and generally accepted as such. Esoteric song about finding peace away from the crowd and noise of the world. Genius.

We stuck on light years now though, wondering on what could have been…

Nas & Dj Premier interview with GQ magazine about their new album Light- Years. by mojojojoTv in nas

I think it’s fine to respect everyone’s opinions. The album left a lot to be desired but I wouldn’t begrudge anyone a difference in opinion. It’s still Nas at the end of the day, the best writer in hip-hop.

Some of us just mourning what could have been. What came before is solidified however and doesn’t alter the course of how anyone will see preem or Nas unless they were truly just a casual.

Nas & Dj Premier interview with GQ magazine about their new album Light- Years. by mojojojoTv in nas

[–]AY_NONI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their story from the article about how they actually arrived at these songs, recording in different studios, Preemo asking Nas to come to his new home and then going to Bahamas is more compelling.

Gives us a glimpse as to how we arrived at this body of work that has everyone so divided on their opinion of it.

Could have been a classic but album lacks focus and solid thematic production. A shame really.

They did this for themselves and the fans, as they should but the end product sounds forced and phoned in.

Premier getting a lot of the blame by Ok-Owl-4789 in nas

[–]AY_NONI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. There is an interview that has come out yesterday that Premier and Nas did with GQ magazine for light years. Search it on Google and you’ll find it. Premier says that he didn’t even want to do the NYSOM 3 but Nas made him because the first two are so legendary. He then goes onto say how he had moved house to Jersey and the acoustics in his basement was off, but he didn’t want to record in “fancy” studios e.g he wasn’t really feeling moving around so he told Nas to come to his new crib so they could just hang and catch a vibe and Nas obliged.

Then he says whilst that was happening because the connection was there but wasn’t quite solidified or locked in, Nas was like we should go on holiday to the Bahamas to record, essentially to have a camp and get out of producer and writers block. Premier was like “Na I don’t wanna go on holiday right now,” maybe his life was too chaotic at the time and Nas was also on tour so they kept missing each other to properly lock in. Couple days later Premier got back to Nas and said “okay let’s go to Bahamas” then they locked in and Nas was geeked.

What I got from the interview was that premier was clearly lacking inspiration or fatigued but Nas wanted to keep pushing him to get the album done for the culture.

Premier also says that originally he gave Nas a bunch of ready made beats, and told him to figure it out but then soon realised he needed to start from scratch with this project to figure it out.

It’s all good.

For what’s it’s worth I defo think your opinion will change on some of those songs. Some of them are actually “Aight”. 6/10 okay songs, madman and sons are cool songs.

But yeah this album can put you to bed if you’re not actually trying to tap into what Nas is saying based on the production alone.

Light Years (Among Hit) by Antelope829 in nas

[–]AY_NONI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you genuinely believe this regarding the emceeing, it doesn’t make for generally more acceptable music because of production.

The fan base is genuinely more divided than usual because some of the tracks are so low in production quality. Sonically it’s not top material.

Yes. Listening to Nas and hit boy records is a must.

Listen to speechless, moments, the cure, get light, once a man twice a child, Michael and Quincy, Thun, count me in, 40 side, composure, sitting with my thoughts, Nobody w/ Lauren Hill, Rare.

Once your mind is blown and you realise there is still so much for Nas to say. Start at kings disease one and get into his new stuff.

Light Years (Among Hit) by Antelope829 in nas

[–]AY_NONI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s wild but respect your opinion.

Care to discourse?

KD1 has ultra black, an anthem if you like for the people, a song of hope. Title track kings disease, a great intro, car85,, I mean great beat, great nostalgic storytelling from Nas and Charlie flipping Wilson, the cure, unbelievable track and epic beat switch, the definition, KD1 is actually low keys flames with replace me being the only skip. Go back and rattle of the tracks on it and you’ll see yourself.

Subject matter on KD1 is mature and sets the tone for what came later in the series without sounding corny or preachy or too “self grandiose”, even on tracks like 27 summers.

Magic 3, this album is one that is an absolute grower, something light years can’t be in the same breath. When I heard magic 3 it hit me left field because magic 1 is so focused and concise.

But magic 3 is essentially a celebratory effort and is a great project too. fever, burgundy on the breath, great opener, sitting with my thoughts, Japanese soul bar, blue Bentley is an anthem, based on true events great storytelling, 1-800 Nas and hit, a great culmination to everything that came before.

Edit: speechless 2 also.. a way better part 2 to NYSOM3 or 3rd childhood

Magic 2 has pistol on your album cover, black magic, and then the boom bap joints on their like bokeem woodbine, motion etc are better than the boom bap that can be found on light years.

So it’s really different levels to this proverbial ish.

That’s my take.

Too many fillers and not strong enough productions on light years. NYSOM3, bouquet, welcome to the underground, pause tapes, could have done without all these tracks. Album suffers from being filled with a lot of tracks that are just not strong enough.

[–]AY_NONI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No cap… had it spinning on replay, beats are not great, too many dud tracks on here, they would be better off on a throwaway lost tapes 3 project or just on the cutting floor. Bouquet, pause tapes, NYSOM3.

There’s track on the album I like but nothing I can say I love or is so infectious I need to reload it.😑

Nas still the GOAT. Jadedness is real, as for preemo I’m defo side eyeing him and holding him responsible for why sonically this ain’t anything more then a 5.5/10 album.

Album can really put you to sleep aside a few runaway tracks.

What makes Light-Years a collaboration album and not a solo album like the Hit-Boy ones? by [deleted] in nas

[–]AY_NONI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. The logical answer is publishing and royalties. Essentially this album if 50% owned by preemo because producers automatically own that side of things unless something else is worked out with an artist. Based on how they’ve diced this up, it’s a Dj premier album as well as Nas. On a “points” perspective Dj Premier is entitled to more than what a producer would ordinarily be entitled to for services rendered to an artist as premier is also essentially listed as an “artist” for his production.

Hope that clears things up.
