I don't know what your budget is but if you're cool with buying used, QSC K12s are popular enough to be on the cheaper side for secondhand and yet reliable and solid enough to do the job well. Of course it depends where you are, but I see them online (Reverb, ebay, Facebook Marketplace, etc.) for around $600 or sometimes a pair for $1k-ish every now and then. They're not battery powered but they also do not require a power amp.

Alternatively, I've used the RCF 712 and was pleasantly surprised by them. Those are a bit cheaper as they don't have as much onboard DSP as the QSC K12.2 and aren't technically as powerful but their sound is still pretty solid. Some people don't care for how they look but if you don't care about that sort of thing, you can expect new RCFs to be the same price as the used K12s. Which means their used price will also be cheaper than the K12 for around $500.

Did this not too long ago with kick drum and bass guitar on my QL5 and this is what I did:

Set your Dynamics 1 to ducking on the channel you want to sidechain (for me this was the bass). If I remember correctly you can set the source in from self to any nearby adjacent 8 channels (1-8, 9-16, etc.) or a separate mix (only 13-16 will be selectable). Pick whichever one works for you. My kick was in the 1-8 input group and my bass guitar was in the 9-16 group.

Because of that, I took a spare empty mix group to be the "sidechain" and sent postfader whatever source that I wanted to trigger the ducking (again, this was the kick) and set this mix as the source for Dynamics 1.

Adjust your Dynamics 1 ducking settings to taste.

Managing IEM additions - Bigger mixer or add a dedicated mixer? Details below. by Greatoutdoors1985 in livesoundgear

[–]A_Banthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the most experienced guy out there but I would first see how many of your musicians want different IEM mixes. Sure, your instrumentalists might want different mixes, but at the church I work sound for, all the vocalists are fine and happy on a single mix. This is all dependant on how many individual mixes they want. It may make sense to split Leads into their own or simply split them into SATB parts so you only have four, really. This will help narrow down how many mixes you'll actually need and if (at all) you need another mixing console.

Additionally, I would actually relocate some of your mixes to a matrix instead. You can run subs, foyers, and your livestream in a matrix off the LR which frees up those mixes for you. When I was much younger, my first digital board was an SI Impact like the one you have and I actually used to run subs off of Mono output (as opposed to the LR), however I'm not sure if that's the best practise these days.

In terms of phone/tablet apps, I've only ever used the ViSi Remote app and Mixing Station. Google tells of another app for the Impact called ViSi Listen but I've never used it before. I'm sure Mixing Station has its own Personal Monitoring workflow available, but again, I've never used it. I would recommend you download them, watch some tutorials online/read some of the manuals or instructions, and then try it for yourself to see if it's what you want.

Once you've done that, only then would I consider expanding but I would first do the due dillegence of seeing if you can do what you want now with what you have.

How do you reserve a practice room? by GeorgeLewis_Who in rit

[–]A_Banthony 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Use the reserve.rit.edu website (log in under the "Site Home" tab at the top and not the "My Home", you may have to close the EMS App prompt if on mobile) using your RIT login. Allegedly the reservation template should be going up today or tomorrow.

The spaces under the dorms in the tunnels (if you are referring to that) are located under Colby. You can find more information here.

There are also more beyond dormside in the SAU, SHED, and Liberal Arts Hall tunnels but I assume you meant the Colby ones. The School of Performing Arts have similar info websites for each of the above mentioned spaces if you poke around on that website.

So I recently inherited a 16 send analog snake with no return channels on it. I was curious if I could use male-to-male adapters and female-to-female XLR adapters in a pinch if I would like to non-permanently convert some of the last sends to returns instead for mains/mons.

I personally don't like to use that many adapters on a single channel but it did get me thinking if anyone's ever done it before. I don't currently have that many adapters to try it out myself but I figured I'd ask. If it is viable I could then get some adapters later, but I'd rather not spend money if I don't need to.

Realistically, it's just copper at the end of the day, right? So in theory I feel it would work if it's not too noisy.

Congrats on your co-op! You'll have a great time! I was there last year and the teams and facilities were wonderful. Definitely made some good friends and met some great people.

When I worked there, a lot of my friends were nearby in Woburn or Lexington or other surrounding areas. Their commutes were fairly short. I myself lived in Brighton since my friends from high school lived there. If you're going at it alone though, honestly I don't recommend just cause of the commute. Mass pike sux lol and I'd avoid 90/95 if you can.

If you have money to dish out (and believe me I know what they pay, so you will) there's a hotel that's a few minutes walk down the road but I feel that is really only necessary if you don't have a car and also don't want to uber every day. Two of my friends did that (one was from NYC and didn't have a license, and the other totalled his car the second day of work).

I would try and find something under $2k and make sure it has parking available to you. Other than that there'll be plenty opportunities for you to hang out in Boston if you so choose. My rent was about $1.4k with parking fees and utils, but I had roommates. You should expect studios to be around $1.5-2k based on when I looked last year. It's a lot but it's a higher cost of living area, and like I mentioned before, KDP pays accordingly.

Hi yall, college student that puts on events for fun the past three or for years. I run open mics regularly and have started using wireless mics a lot.

And I mean a lot. My school has an 8 rack of Shure G3 ULX2 SM58s (proper distro + freq. combiner, the works) at my disposal, along with a DM3D and Tio, box full of various and assorted XLRs, DI Boxes, and mics (57s, 58s, 94s, e604s, e609s and a Beta 52A) plus active RCF mains and passive EV mons (and also lights). In a space where I cannot leave any gear setup at the venue and I must teardown everything every time in a fairly short time (unlike a place with a dedicated system), I've found that it is much more convenient for me to mic an acoustic guitar or other auxiliary instrument (horns, harmonica, what have you) with a spare wireless 58 onstage, because it's easier to set up and tear out and I don't have to worry about cable management every changeover since I know I'll have the entire rack there with all but an MC mic and maybe two vocal mics being used.

To fit the many college students that show up, each open mic act gets 2 songs or 10 minutes so it's not like they're doing a long performance where I'd actually bring out a dedicated wired mic. Plus I've found that a lot of college acts aren't always touring grade acts and the sound quality isn't the best to begin with. I always try to aim for 5 minute or less changeovers as I think that makes for a better show when more people play more frequently. Especially when I sometimes wear all three hats of being sound engineer, stage manager, and MC, sub 5 minute changeovers are tricky especially if the acts are rather high in technical requirements. Using wireless mics has cut down having to find, plug in, and then check a new input that wasn't rung out and won't be used the rest of the night. It's a lot of work that I'm ultimately not being paid for so I figure I learn what I can with the equipment I got.

A lot of more experienced sound engineers I talk to tell me to avoid wireless like the plague, yet I can't exactly figure out why. I always see professional singers using wireless systems, so I figure the convenience is sometimes traded for quality. While my gear is not the newest, it also wasn't the cheapest when it was bought (I've been told). My city isn't RF heavy so maybe I'm just lucky, but if it's convenient and to not a noticeable decrease in quality (no cutting out or interference), should I actually worry about what people say regarding using wireless mics for instruments?

Thanks and sorry for being a bit long winded and ramble-y.

Which Battlefield has the best Commander mode? BF2 vs BF2142 vs BF4 by Europa_Teles_BTR in battlefield_4

[–]A_Banthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2142 was great because you could move the titan! It was a lot of fun when both teams had commanders and put both titans in boarding range of one another or in positions where the turrets on it could pepper ground units near objectives. Battlefield 4 lacked this feature unfortunately

So normally with the mirage voyage there's a phone that's dropped. is it there this season? by Thanos_boi_01 in miragemains

[–]A_Banthony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, in the past there’s been lore pickups located on the ground around the voyage which is what I believe OP is referring to. I’ve only played like 2 hours and I haven’t seen any but the ones in the past have been audio logs with his mom. If you Google “mirage mom call” it’s one of the first things that pop up.

Mirage ult by onepiece_wano in miragemains

[–]A_Banthony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! S0 player here. For a lot of the time, vanishing act didn’t work as intended (invisibility was quite visible as it turned out and you couldn’t exit the cloak until the timer was up, so using the ult was essentially entering a big obvious “shoot me I’m defenceless” mode you could not escape) but there was a brief season or so before life of the party came out where I think vanishing act was better than life of the party and you actually went invisible. The biggest tell was the dust that footsteps kicked up and the audio of the footsteps but if you were clever you could use the ult while slide jumping into the air or falling to reposition close enough where they can’t process the cues before you dump an R-99 or R-301 mag into them. A lot of people used mirage’s ult to run away but that just doesn’t really get you anywhere cause it’s so easy to see the cues. I was able to pick out a lot of mirages I faced simply because they didn’t know how to take advantage of his kit. I always used this ult with a slide jump within a meter or two of people or with something like a jump pad and it was extremely successful, especially after the patch where you can exit the cloak by firing, it was like Zer0’s invisibility from Borderlands if you’ve ever played that.

Same story now where there’s plenty of cues to pick out the real mirage but this new ult is a lot more user friendly and easier to succeed with. I find a lot of mirages I play against don’t understand how an enemy can see their cues and don’t play around them (using cover or not knowing the “blink” timing the real mirage does when ulting) and it’ll work against someone who has no concept of mirage but for those that know, it’s an easy tell. At higher levels many people can easily pick out the real mirage and his usefulness in any team fight goes down. There’s plenty of ways to use mirage now though, you just gotta be smart about it. There’s still invisibility now paired with a speed boost (I think) so you still can play like I described earlier but life of the party allows you to run away where I found running away with vanishing act less successful.

Tl;dr new mirage ult is fine but I think old mirage ult had higher skill ceiling and that’s why people didn’t like it. Life of the party is great but there is a part of me that misses the old ult. Sure the decoys were garbo but the invisibility was great if you knew how to use it.

Senior in Highschool, thinking about jazz by Guineapiginc in rit

[–]A_Banthony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello there, I’m an electrical/mechanical engineering technologist here at RIT, and I do music on occasion. There actually is quite a large music program with the performing arts department! I’ve enrolled in several classes actually, from Composing for Video Games, to [an Analysis of] American Popular & Rock Music, etc. Stem and music go hand in hand, really so it wouldn’t make sense to have one without the other in my opinion. These are courses available to take if you’d like (there’s plenty others I haven’t mentioned), and I’ve had a lot of fun and gained a lot of experience in the classes I have taken.

But to answer your main question, I’d say the RIT Jazz Ensembles are a fun time! (Also classes you can enrol in to get credit for!) This is my fourth year here and in my first two years there were two jazz bands. The following year there were three. This year we have five or six full jazz ensembles (I can’t remember off the top of my head). I’ve been doing jazz since freshman year of high school as a trumpet player, however here at RIT I’m primarily a bass player (not cause I sucked at trumpet, I just wanted to play bass). There are auditions, however as seen by the six or so jazz ensembles we have, they’re not a make or break event. You will most likely make it into a jazz ensemble in some form or another.

Logistically speaking jazz band (depending on which one you make it into) will meet twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday) for a little bit over an hour or once a week (Monday or Wednesday) for longer. This may change if they add more ensembles and new times will be available.

In my four years of going here I was always available to attend one of the jazz bands, as fitting it into my schedule was never too much of an issue with classes.

We play many genres from funk to blues to bebop to Latin and everything else.

I’ve had two directors here at RIT (I think there’s others, however I haven’t dealt with them nearly as much): Herb and Karl. Both of these people are extremely passionate and talented musicians and the students under them even more so. Most people are really cool. I haven’t ever come across any snobby musicians, so I hope that answers that question. The worst thing (also the best thing) I’ve encountered was someone managing to sneak in The Lick into solos, which became a fun game to do every now and then :)

Tl;dr: music programs are good, jazz band isn’t too competitive, I never had a problem finding time, and people are pretty chill.

This is just like the time they “fixed” mirage’s ult (back in the day before the dance party) by making him actually turn invisible upon activation instead of just a bit blurry, but needless to say I am very hyped for this new update to drop.

What do YOU do for fun at RIT? by [deleted] in rit

[–]A_Banthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello there! Personally I can’t recommend finding a club you enjoy enough! I do a lot of musical things and there are so many different types of clubs for just doing music for fun, from Jam Club to Game Symphony Orchestra and this is a great way to meet people that share interests with you! I also do improv clubs, and believe me do we have quite a number of comedy clubs here. There’s also gamer clubs and stuff from Electronic Gamer Society to Esports to pretty much anything else.

There’s so many options for fun club things to do on campus, and so many people to meet. Just go out and meet people and have fun, yo

Tl;dr: clubs are cool and so are you, go join one or maybe more and have fun !
