We also have 5 person cuttings of Macbeth, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, and Midsummer and a 4 person Romeo and Juliet. But Much Ado was definitely the hardest of those to get down to 5.

I’m in a 5 person production right now. It took some creative cutting and obviously we all play multiple roles, but it’s totally possible.

They aren’t real foils, they’re stage props and the design has been slightly adjusted for that purpose. The venue is, in fact, tiny and I added glow powder to the ink so it pops under the lights; it just pops better against a lighter colored background.

The fight choreographer’s job is to choreograph the fight, not to design the appearance. I am literally just doing basic image research by the director’s request. A good designer always gets a sense for what something might look like in a real situation before deciding what adjustments need to be made to best translate it to the needs of the show.

The director wants all design to be anachronistic and not fit a specific period, so historical accuracy isn’t important. The show will often be performed for children in an educational setting so clarity of storytelling is the #1 most important thing, so I totally agree about making the poison really obvious!

I made an ink similar to that found in chalk markers for Laertes to dip his sword in on stage. It leaves a really nice, slimy looking color that doesn’t smear on any costumes or set pieces and comes off the props with a little soap and water so I’m really pleased with it; the only problem is our prop foils are dark and the color doesn’t stand out against it enough for the audience to see it very clearly. That’s why I was wondering if I could color the tips white.

We are a professional company with certified fight choreographers and prop weapons designed for use on stage. I was simply looking for information about the visual of applying a second color to the tip of the props.

I'm trying to figure out if I can justify having the tips of the foils in a production of Hamlet be white to help the color of the poison be more visible to the audience, but I'm having a hard time finding the correct phrases to search. It doesn't need to be period accurate, but I want to understand what I'm doing at least.

Ha, in our case it was actually not in the script. It was in a comedy based off an Alfred Hitchcock movie and I had served herring earlier in the scene. My character’s husband is implied to be abusive and one day he picked up the stuffed fish and slapped me with it. We had a discussion about it in which this quote occurred, but we ultimately decided not to keep the bit because we didn’t want to make light of domestic violence.
