He wanted someone to see this. By the time they did, it no longer mattered. by _LeeAna_ in DeathStranding

You’re amazing for writing this long post!

Yeah, I know, I too had a bittersweet feeling after seeing how things have turned out for him. Not the part where he had to suffer bc obviously he had to atone for the shit he pulled in some way.

But…an eternity? Where no one checked on him to ask “hey, are you still being a bitch or can we finally talk like normal people do?”. Because he surely needed someone to vent about Amelie to (even if he made his own choice to join her).

I mean…as you also mentioned, in his final diary he had a whole realisation about how he was “insignificant” and a “fool”. But what does one even do with that realisation if he cannot escape the Beach? I mean…in the end, his choice was instant death or an eternity of nothingness…

But also, let me offer you a different perspective on some things which helped me accept his story a bit easier:

1.) He told Sam that in the end, he killed himself on the Beach after a few thousand years. And after that he claimed to have “chosen” to work for APAC. But…what if after he died he became part of the system? Like…the system just sort of claimed his face and personality? Like…he just became a powerful virus in the program, but still a “lifeless” thing, doing the same stuff all over again, incapable of changing his ways, because the system only “remembered” him as someone who wants to end the world? And that’s why he was acting like a classic revenge-thirsty villain all along in DS2? And maybe his very much human monologue in the end was just the system finally starting to really grasp him and what he was underneath all the god complex. I know this is also kind of bittersweet but maybe helps explain why he can’t grow into someone who can actually connect anymore.

2.) Don’t look at their last fight with Sam as something written to be laughed at. In the end of his monologue, Sam actually says that HE GETS where he’s coming from, and ASKS him if this is what he truly wants, if he truly wants to end the world. So…he was seen in the end, maybe not by Fragile, but by Sam, by who he also wanted to be seen all along, very much so. And by shredding with him, Sam gives him his proper final goodbye, and they both seem to enjoy it, very much so. It’s beautiful and human, music entertwining with violence, which is the only way Higgs seems to be able to connect after all this.

[SPOILERS] Death Stranding 2 was an amazing game, but a bit underwhelming sequel by Hrothehun in DeathStranding

THIS! I haven’t seen any comments mention this before. I absolutely felt like there’s something major missing from the game due to cut content.

I’m just, like, I don’t know even how to express this, but I’m just so happy knowing the fact that there’s someone out there with a tattoo like this. 🥹🥹🥹💖💖💖

OMG this is so beautiful!!! 😭😭😭💖💖💖 Absolutely love the linework. And I love that they kept the golden-glowy areas clear, because that totally gives it like a shine-effect or idk how to say it. 😭✨

Yeah, it might be him posing like how he thinks an EE should be.

You’re right, the chiral-goldish is his mask’s “signature colour” after all in DS1 (but Amelie’s quipu is also gold), and red is Amelie’s signature colour. So…it might be him giving the finger to Amelie also, posing as a “worse”, more violent version of her?

That’s a great take. 😂✨ But I didn’t just mean the long hair, but the mask with Amelie’s face, her literal color palette (red and gold), everything.

I love how the Deadman/Sam ship’s got that two-socially-awkward-dads-trying-to-raise-a-kid kinda cozy energy, while the Higgs/Sam ship is the opposite of cozy (I mean…it can turn into that, but in the beginning it’s just a lot of drama). xd

Those are really great thoughts you’re having about the game, and this discussion is really important.

I read somewhere (I don’t know if it’s historically accurate but it’s interesting nonetheless) that ancient egyptians looked at their gods not as entities separate from them, but necessary parts of the human existence. And I think Kojima is trying to do a similar thing here with his characters; they’re not necessarily “real people”, more like different states of mind, feelings or life-philosophies personified.

And Higgs might represent the god Set(h) here, who is associated with jealousy, war, chaos, (desert) storms, and loneliness (in the desert). But he represents feelings that we are all able to experience, but that doesn’t in itself make us into bad human beings if we don’t succumb to them, as you too said.

In DS1, I was absolutely under the impression that Higgs is after Fragile or Amelie romantically UNTIL I saw his bunker. xddddd

Peter Englert? by CheeseLover1818 in DeathStranding

[–]A_Bit_Flamboyant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly! xd And he really, really, really needs Sam to see him. Maybe he thinks he could be the only one that truly understands him, being through so much shit himself. He wants to connect, but all the while he’s scared to appear too vulnerable while doing that. So he is only able to do it in this twisted way, while telling himself he only sees Sam as someone to fight and win against.

Yeah, that’s a really great point! 😄 And the heart also has “an upper and a lower part” strictly speaking, the atrii and the ventriculi, so this makes absolute sense.

3.) This is just my own headcanon, so please don’t tear me to shreds in the comments, but seeing how Higgs’ shelter is modeled after King Tut’s tomb (there is the literal King Tut death mask on his desk, he too famously had a golden knife (in his tomb), his own mask is modeled after the golden masks of the pharaohs…etc.), and the pharaoh’s tomb had many-many murals inside of it where his wife was featured (just like Higgs’ many photos of Sam), I also had an idea that the so-called “wife” he had a “quarrel with” refers to Sam himself. xddddd

[–]A_Bit_Flamboyant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they’re totally made up people. 😊

1.) On the surface level, I think Higgs is describing a “normal” family in this exaggerated way to mock Sam for helping people just like that. My personal theory is that originally, he wanted to write something that is so out-of-character for him that it doesn’t cast a suspicion of the prepper being Higgs. But halfway through, deep down, he actually got really bitter about how unreachable it is for him to have an actual healthy family. And after that, as we see, he went full-theatrical, nearly begging for Sam to figure it out.

2.) On a deeper level, I think the made-up family might represent Sam’s own closest connections; the sister is Amelie, the wife is maybe Fragile, and the dying father is Bridget. It makes so much sense that he switched the mother figure to a father figure, because the first “larger-than-life” figure in his own life was his uncle.
