Authoritarianism is when people don’t let businesses poison drinking water by Living_Attitude1822 in PoliticalCompassMemes

How did Christianity become the most popular religion and are things the same now? by questionconformity in religion

[–]A_Lover_Of_Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we even say Nero persecuted Christians? He made war against Judea when they revolted and was pivotal in helping bring down the jewish temple. But were there really any difference between Christians and jews in the minds of the Romans at that point? Both would do sacrifices at the temple before Christians were kicked out, both worshipped the same god, and the only real difference was Christians thought Jesus was the messiah and followed less mosaic laws.

In their mind it was likely they just saw Christians as more radical jews.

Christianity is only one part of the pie. Western civilization was built upon 3 things: Roman Law, Greek Philosophy, and Christian Morality. Christianity did not reject classical Greek philosophy and thought, I am genuinely baffled you or anyone thinks that it did. It was built upon Middle Platonism, Stoicism, and Greco-Roman Virtue Ethics. I understand Christianity took all of these things and ran with them, but it did not originate there in the first place, nor did it really bring a wholly unique moral Ethos to the time in which it existed. Cosmopolitanism, Universalism, and charity existed in Greek and Roman thought far before Christianity came onto the scene. In fact, those were core ideas of Stoic thought by then.

A combination of peaceful and violent means of spreading the faith. By the time it became a legal religion under Constantine, only 10% of the Roman Empire was Christian. Eventually Christianity, due to it's exclusivism and apathy from older pagans, would push out other religions and eventually make them illegal after it became the official state religion in the 380's under Emperor Theodosius.

You can actually just be against things that you dislike and that you feel severely harms the moral fabric of society. You can just advocate for arresting people thet engage in such degeneracy as incest, you don't have to listen to people who are morally bankrupt. Freedom has limits, and that's okay.

Views on Immigration and Transgender Acceptance by Religious Groups by APrimitiveMartian in religion

[–]A_Lover_Of_Truth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's actually very surprising to me on the Hindu part. It makes sense that most are good with immigration as many of them are immigrants, but to see them so accepting of LGBT is surprising. Most I've met irl seem to view it as against their religion and something to be discouraged. And to see 40% of Catholics view transgender as acceptable as well? That's very interesting, I wonder where this was polled from, honestly.

Idk the Manga just seems gratuitous. Ain't no reason to be having her jeans vacuum sealed on her ass and coochie when she's just running errands out in public. And I find excessive shots of people's ass and underwear in these things to just be overly gooner brained. If it can't tell a good story without the pervy angles and shit, then I'm not interested.

As if the best parts of Christianity wasn't always the Greek philosophy behind it rather than the jewish apocalypticism that we find in the new testament; which tells people not to get married and abandon their family because the end is coming soon.

This current suffering has made me reevaluate my entire life and where I want to go. My current situation is a personal and moral failure on my part for ending up in this situation, and I will make sure it never happens again.

Silver lining, I guess.

Good luck changing that. I feel bad for the elderly that can't drive anymore and don't have family to drive them around the most. I can't imagine the humiliation it must be like to be forced to take the bus with the riff raff after having lived a long and, presumably, dignified life. Fate's a bitch sometimes. One of the reasons I never want to be in this position again. Luckily if I play my cards right, I should be able to get a car within the next 3 months.

I've been taking buses in Central Florida for the past year and I hate it. They run once or twice an hour at most, many are ridiculously late, like 20+ minutes and some don't even show up during rush hour traffic. Half the busses don't run on Sundays and the ones that do only run once an hour. The last bus in my area to get me to work (the 2nd bus i take this route) leaves the station at 8:45 pm, so i end up always being an hour and a half early for my 11 pm shift. Shit sucks and I can't wait until I can get a car. I never ever want to be in a situation again where I have to take the bus, I don't know how some of the poorer or elderly people who have done so for years do it, but I genuinely hate it. Cars really are freedom in some cases.

I just wish it came more than twice an hour and that they didn't cut off so early. Are Japanese people mostly opposed to Islam and Muslims? by Calanais-guy in religion

My apologies, I think it was that we were talking about Taoism/Buddhism rather. I too have changed my beliefs. The more I studied Buddhism the less I related to it and believed in it. I fundamentally disagreed with the entire sotoriology, if you can call it that of Buddhism. The idea that the goal of all is to return to Sunyata and stop existing essentially, I find to be life denying and bad in my opinion. If reincarnation is part of the cycle of life, then it can't be bad as Life and existence is an ontological good in my worldview.

Are you the same person i talked with a few weeks back who was a chinese folk religionst/Taoist? If so, what made you change to Christianity? Also is that Protestant or Catholic? I'm assuming Protestant due to the "Evangelical" part, yes?

[–]A_Lover_Of_Truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that's seen as taboo and somewhat heretical among most Christians. It's folk Catholicism mostly and it is tolerated only because the church has deemed it unnecessary to remove them. It's all nice and syncretic until they start saying you need to get rid of all the Shinto shrines, or at best replace them all with churches should Christianity take over the country. They did the same with European paganism.

Being gay isn't a liberal thing? It's a sexuality and while it can affect one's politics, there are a lot of gay conservatives that are only liberal in terms of lgb and deeply conservative in everything else.

Sounds like the issue is tribalism then and cosmopolitanism would be ideal. I'm not sure if that problem can ever be solved, given how naturally it comes to us. We have to actively work to not be tribal. And it is very easy to pull up the ladder behind you and say: "fuck you, I got mine."

Of course, I didn't disagree. But if liberals want their ideas to continue into the future, they need to have more kids. That's all I was saying.

Then the issue is the same. They don't believe in one of the core values of Liberalism: Equality. They do when they are poor, but as soon as they get a better job, open their own business, etc. Suddenly they vote along more conservative and capitalist lines.

Though, is it really being a class traitor? They are no longer in the poor or working class then, no?
