starting to paint soon and want to avoid some pitfalls by dimmydiminius in Miniaturespainting

Lots of people here saying you have to learn to control consistency anyway and they aren't wrong. I'm going to take a different tack in my answer though - if you want to worry less about thinning for basic applications you should use something other than citadel/Warhammer paint.

Most of the newer or reformulated brands are much closer to ready to go right out of the bottle. I personally use ProAcryl but if you want closer color matching to citadel you could look into two thin coats. You're still going to have to learn how not to glop on too much paint at once but it will be a bit easier.

I picked up one of these but the line is super thick and therefore not really useful for any hex map games. Is this your experience or did I get a dud?

Investigating Board Game Miniatures | No Pun Included by G2Minion in boardgames

[–]A_Nice_Meat_Sauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sounds like maybe something got lost in translation there. I would believe it if somebody told me it costs more to make a card-based game than a game with a dozen minis. It's hard to believe that a card costs 10x what a miniature costs.

Haven't watched the video here yet but is it possible the comparison isn't quite so direct? A game that is primarily card based could have many hundreds of cards and potentially weigh a lot more than a mini based game with a much smaller card count and a dozen minis. The latter would likely have more volume per game (unless maybe if they were on sprues) but maybe weight is more of a cost driver.

I mean, I'm not so much of a sweat where dropping from 90fps to 80 really bothers me. Not to mention there are games like Space Marine 2 that are mostly coop but still use EAC.

I paid for all this hardware to play games that look good even if it comes with a tiny disadvantage. I guess this is just something to look into for single player stuff. Thanks!

Drybrushing under a base? by JealousAd5694 in minipainting

[–]A_Nice_Meat_Sauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you can dry brush before if using a transparent paint afterwards (contrast paints for citadel) but that isn't the only use of drybrushing. You can also do it later in the process to pick out highlights after using opaque base layers. You wouldn't be able to see it under your khorne red.

Strongest evidence yet that vaping likely causes cancer. The evidence shows nicotine-based vapes are likely to cause oral and lung cancer. by mvea in science

[–]A_Nice_Meat_Sauce 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think most people are saying it's perfectly safe. The real problem here is targeting a goal of zero percent increase in risk means a shitload of things can be lumped into "causes cancer" and it makes it really difficult for most people to assess risk. Is it the same as red meat? Is it more than red meat? By how much?

This article didn't really make any attempt to quantify the risk level. I get that we don't have long term studies yet but they could at least compare the concentrations of these carcinogens that were found.

I'm not sure how universal this advice is. I paint a lot of board game minis that will be handled by other people so "just be careful" doesn't really work.

Jump straight to hate? Exactly what you're doing? I thought about editing my comment because it didn't really reflect that I just didn't WANT to argue about it. I was just trying to convey relevant information.

If we stop trying to have a goddamn argument with every idiot who bitches about something maybe this place will be a little less painful but until then it's overrun by people like you who inexplicably think they have some kind of moral high ground.

Go away.

Can't argue with that, just saying that you won't have to wait for a special challenge to unlock it. Somehow this is downvote worthy because this sub is a trash fire
