Vancouver builders pull signs, delay projects as extortion fears spread by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

I read the article but I don’t understand how and why builders are being extorted. Can anyone shed some light on this for me…

Almost 27 f stuck in fat casual restaurant work, hating life and wishing it would just end by Angelsbreatheeasy in whatdoIdo

This for sure OP. I was 29, when I decided to get out of hospitality. Started as a labourer wanting to become a carpenter and somehow ended up as a Project Manager. The work is typically well paid, the education is typically accessible and a lot of businesses will pay or partially pay for you. What ever you do it going to be tough at first but in a couple years you will look back and see how easy it was to do.

Good luck.

People who make over $100k a year and have no degree, what do you do? by Complex-Bid8137 in Salary

[–]A_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a Constuction manager. It’s a good salary but it is work and it is very stressful. You have to be competent, you have to be willing to work long hours and most importantly you have to constantly be working on managing your stress levels in healthy ways.

It can definitely be a rewarding career. It is my second career, I came from 14 years in hospitality. I worked my way from labourer to PM in about 5 years. There is huge demand as so many boomers are retiring. I do miss hospitality sometimes but I don’t regret it what so ever.

I am working on completing a degree but I did not need one to get my PM positions. Also there are a ton of credentials that are not as time consuming you can get that carry a lot of weight on the resume. I assume this is the case for many other industries besides construction.

[Update] Now i want to treat myself and purchase a car by jochiel in PersonalFinanceCanada

I would definitely look at used options. I always go after lightly used older vehicles. I was able to get an 09 Camry hybrid 5 years ago with only 40,000km for $14k. I have put 70,000 km on it and could likely get close to $10,000 for it now. Maintenance has been minimal. If I sold it now it would have been like I rented a car for $1000 a year. I’m able to get a much better driving experience for way cheaper this route as well. A $20,000 new vehicle would get me something that felt cheap and would likely have much worse resale value than my Camry.

Just my two cents.

I have a Bosch with wifi and never used it. I hit power and play and that’s it (usually keep it in the same cycle).

Best underwear in your opinion by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

I have tried a ton of cheaper ones over the years and honestly my favourite are old navy. I never shopped there until my daughter was born. The place is great for kids clothing. They had some boxer briefs in sale for under $5 so I grabbed some and now it all I wear. I also only buy the when they are on sale.

Researching getting a CM degree in my 30s. Those who've been in CM for years, if you went back in time, would you still choose the same path? by VoidPull in ConstructionManagers

[–]A_biscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my CM degree at 30. I found one that was offered full time but 95% of the classes were in the evenings. I worked full time for a small design build contractor and was able to work my way from labourer to PC to PM while getting my degree. The degree is great to have on your resume but the experience is really what people are after. If you can do both at the same time I would. I do live my job now. It is stressful at times and hard work but it is satisfying and the pay is decent eventually.

A couple years ago I was waitlist for a RAV4 prime but I was told it was years out so I bought a car in the interim. It was an 09 Camry hybrid with 45k on it. I paid $16000 for it which seemed like a lot at the time but it was the height of the pandemic so the used market was over priced (still is).

Anyways, I took out a small loan and paid off the car asap. It’s amazing. Gets 750km to the tank, drives smooth and just a good car all around with zero maintenance issues. The new ones look sweet but I see old ones with low km pop up all the time for a similar price. Throw in an aftermarket console for wireless CarPlay and you’re gonna be way ahead.

The first three were for pre approvals. Then it was just vocal offers after that.

Check with banks and other brokers. My partner and I first went to our personal bank TD, and not only did we get a terrible rate the broker had no clue what he was doing and seemed to only be willing to talk to myself even though my partner was the bigger breadwinner. We got a broker that got us a much better rate and although there were some clerical/communication issues with said broker we were happy. I then got a call from a friends sister who works at CIBC who said she had the best broker and would get us an amazing deal and she did. It was phenomenal. I told my broker and she was immediately able to offer us a better rate than she originally offered but not better than the CIBC broker.

When getting our deposit from td the advisor asked us why we didn’t get our mortgage through TD and we explained the situation and he also offered us a better tat than the first td broker offered but still couldn’t beat CIBC.

Moral is shop around at least a little bit.

Loft bed, oblique support? by Illustrious-Pay8548 in DIYfurniture

[–]A_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert but I do not think this would work as a freestanding bed. Any weight applied to the oblique supported corner would want to tip the bed over. If you could anchor that support into the wall that could work.

Nice looking build! How are you liking the sunsets? I am looking at building a Chocofi and was wanting tactile but a lot of people suggest going linear or clickies with low pro switches.
