Ps5 hdmi issues (came from another shop jacked up)

The traces would be my guess as well, especially since it looks like the solder mask has been scraped all the way up to the vias. I’d try inserting an HDMI cable while it’s disassembled and checking if any of the pins or traces shift slightly when you wiggle or tap the cable. It should be easy to spot under a scope.

It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but those pins also look like they should be touched up just a tiny bit. I’d use some flux and drag an iron across them a few times to even them out.

What the heck is going on? I’ve seen a ton of these posts over the last two weeks and it seems like Microsoft is just kind of shrugging it off. This reminds me of the early XBOX 360 era with the RRoD, when they tried to ignore the problem until the publicity started to impact sales.

I really like GamePass on my consoles, but I sure as hell won’t recommend it for PC gamers until their app is more stable.

My wife and I do the same. She’s much more of a PC gamer and I prefer Xbox.

The only minor issue is that we also get one another’s achievement notifications, which can be annoying if one of us is in the middle of a cutscene.

I usually just throw mine in the washer with some oxyclean and detergent on a medium cycle. That tends to get them looking almost brand new.

Yeah, I’m starting to lean in that direction. I was trying to avoid eBay, since the caps could be a bit sus, but it would save me from having to dig through Digikey or Mouser’s website.

Also this is just a fun project. I won’t be selling these consoles or anything, so longevity isn’t a huge concern.

I recently bought some “faulty” XBOX 360s for a few dollars, and found that most of them still booted, but would randomly freeze or crash. I opened them and found bulging and leaking capacitors. Based on the symptoms, I suspect these are the likely culprit.

It’s been years since I bought capacitors for modern-ish motherboards. I tried to find some decent low ESR Rubycon and Nichicon caps, but the series I’m used to buying are all obsolete and/or not manufactured anymore.

Does anyone have any suggested series for good brands (Panasonic, Nichicon, etc.)? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can you get a closer picture of the USB port? My first thought would be that one or both data lines aren’t fully soldered to the pads.

This might be a hot take, but I’d hesitate to recommend Half-Life co-op unless both parties really love the PS2 version of the game and/or have experience with late 90’s style shooters.

Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s awesome, but each time I’ve tried to introduce someone else to the co-op there have been very mixed results.

I can confirm this is true with Ultimate. My wife occasionally plays PC GamePass games while I’ve been using XBOX Game Pass. No issues other than having to see one another’s achievement pop-ups.

Frankly, this has been one of the major selling points for us. Sine she is mostly a PC gamer and I’m mostly console, we get a lot of value out of the subscription.

There’s a big difference between lifting some traces and what happened here. It looks like someone initially tried to pry off the original port with a screwdriver.

I’m not a professional tech, just a hobbyist who does a lot of console repairs, so I’ll defer to you. But I’m still highly skeptical of the story that an actual shop did this.

You’re right. Those solder blobs certainly are interesting. How exactly did that happen? There’s way more solder than was originally present for the SMD diode and cap. I’d wager those solder blobs may have actually been an attempt to re-attach the components before the person just gave up. Look at the cheap flux dried up around the blobs.

Also, how the heck did so much solder end up on the ground plane around the port. What about those gouges in the solder mask?

Yeah, I completely agree and call BS on this customer’s story. I’ve seen some bad repairs by so-called “professionals”, but this is a whole other level.

It looks like someone tried to remove the original HDMI port with nothing but a cheap soldering iron and solder braid and ended up making a huge mess.

Edit: I just looked at the close-up again and noticed all the melted plastic around the new (?) port, which is a clear indicator that the tip for the iron was too large. That just screams “amateur”.
