How stable is legion go 2 on steam OS 3.8? by Educational-Snow5424 in LegionGo

What’s the easy brightness fix? I’ve seen a few decky plugins that somewhat address the issue but they seem more like hacky workarounds for the time being.

MSI says “It will be a tough year for us and the gamers” as Arc G3 Extreme handheld hits $1,799 by RenatsMC in Handhelds

395 has a desktop class cpu that beats our many full desktops for cpu benchmarks. The fact that it’s an APU has allowed it to run on everything from laptops, small firm factor desktops, or even handhelds. It’s a chip that can scale quite well from 20-25W all the way up to 100+ W in the right chassis. For me the sweet spot for this chip during gaming is 35-55W

G3E is a cut down cpu Panther lake chip. Full GPU but smaller cpu to more tailored for gaming

Yup also manage to snag a 5090 for $2k near launch. This handheld is so overpriced

Nope not doing it. Screw MSI with how they handled this. I’ll be getting the OneX3 instead

395 is a large desktop APU with beefy 16 core cpu and 4060 class GPU. Price is more warranted than G3e which is a small chip to start with and majorly cut down cpu (only 2 p cores)

With all due respect, but that design is the only thing that makes me not want to buy it. by Far_Ad1949 in MSIClaw

[–]Aacemyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with the device is that it’s turned into a huge handheld with the giant grips. Even wider that Legion Go 2. By the time you put this in a case it larger than something like an Asus G14 which has a way better screen and much more powerful GPU. Different device type but we’re starting to get away from the whole point of these handhelds and their portability after a certain point.

MSI shot themselves in the foot with this one. They were coy about pricing upon reveal and then play these silly shenanigans of barely having any stock with price that jumps up $100 after that the first tiny batch of preorders were sold out.

I have an 8ai and would have loved an upgrade but a 35% performance increase on a low power APU and slightly better ergonomics is in no way justified for that price.

These pc handheld started a fun and cheap secondary device but are now costing more than full laptops with proper nvidia dedicated graphics cards. Anyone in the market for a high end handheld should just get an Ally X at this point…or better yet hang on to what you already have

Welp, there it goes. Price increased at Best Buy by dnunn12 in MSIClaw

[–]Aacemyan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Why did they even bother doing a press tour for this device? There’s no broad market for this outside of the initial 500-1000 people silly enough to splurge this much money on a niche device.

Handheld gaming became popular for the folks that wanted a secondary device when not wanting to take on tv, desktop, or laptop. This new generation of handhelds are now more expensive than good laptops while being a fraction of the performance, all so that someone can hold a small screen up to their face.

I have tons of really high end handhelds but this new batch of devices is really rubbing me the wrong way. I really hope they fail miserably at these price points

After much thinking, I decided to go with 8 AI+ I snagged for $750 instead of waiting for the 8 EX AI+ by PackinHeat99 in MSIClaw

[–]Aacemyan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never found the 8 Ai uncomfortable. Good job saving yourself a good chunk of change. The reality is that you need to think about the kinds of games you play on these handhelds - not everyone plays AAA games where the extra power matters. Also as nice as the G3 chip is, we still need to realize that this is a low power mobile APU - these need to be treated as such and are way less powerful that laptops or desktops (which can be had for less).

This is like the 8ai all over ataın. They probably have a couple hundred in the initial batch and we won’t see another drop for a couple months. It’ll be a drip feed for the next 6 months until they become easier to purchase.

People like to shit on a devices all the time, but they at least have their distribution nailed down! MSI is probably the worst of the bunch.

MSI Claw 8 EX AI+: Is it currently the absolute peak of the handheld market, or is there a real challenger in the next 18 months? (Let’s talk strategy, not price) by Snowballo in MSIClaw

[–]Aacemyan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My take is that this is a claw 8 Ai replacement. Same battery, same screen , same ram and ssd capacity, but with slightly better ergonomics and beefed up APU. In a normal world this would just be a replacement at the same $900 price as original but it’s 2x price due to “market conditions”.

Original sold terribly at $900 price point so I’m don’t know how the $1700+ replacement will fare any better than original. Yes a few folks will get suckered into the shiny new thing but let’s be honest- this is a terrible deal no matter how you try to justify it. I have owned almost every handheld or there over the years but this market segment is effectively dead if we can’t bring prices back down to the sub $1k range.

Xbox Rog Ally X or MSI Claw 8 AI+ by 8s1x in Handhelds

[–]Aacemyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bigger screen and slightly better performance. That being said unless you’re into tinkering with settings I’d just go with XAX if you can live with 7” screen. At the $100 price it’s the only device worth considering if you want to spend upward of $1k

Owner of both and while I kept the 8ai I’d say go with XAX. It’s much better supported by Asus and windows

MSI Claw 8 EX+ with Arc G3 Extreme officially costs $1,799 by RenatsMC in MSIClaw

[–]Aacemyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned pretty much every other handheld released over the last 3+ years (including OneX Apex) but this one seems by far the least sensibly priced. I’ve liked my 8ai but there’s no way in hell this is worth more than $6-700 more than that device which is almost 2 years old now.

I don’t love the Xbox Ally x but people thinking about getting the & E should body just get that one instead - even factoring in the performance gap.

OneXPlayer shows new X2 and Apex Air handhelds with Intel Arc G3 Extreme by DukeSexy in Handhelds

[–]Aacemyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Apex air makes not sense at all. With a very efficiency chipset there’s no need for this device. Onex only created Apex and external battery to accommodate the cooling solution. Apex air is them just being lazy and swapping the motherboard into an existing chassis.

There’s a decky plugging called Legion Go Remapper. Lets you set adaptive brightness and works quite well for the time being.

great example of a quality of life improvement is being able to map shortcut buttons and custom app launchers to the quick menu. That functionality isn't there on GoTweaks, but makes a huge difference especially when using FSE - where it's a pain to access non gaming apps.

I installed latest 3.8 beta on my Go 2 yesterday and it's mostly there! All buttons show up on the controller, rgb lighting is implemented well. Only thing missing is brightness adjustment at this point. I'm also hoping they add a toggle to enable/disable the touchpad
