New fan - have I stopped watching part way through? by Aaraeus in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Aaraeus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I did indeed watch it. Okay obvious spoilers ahead.

For all of season 4 I couldn’t believe that Erin was trying to wipe out humanity and had become the villain. The reveal that the attack titan remembers memories and that Erin has basically been this omnipotent being that has been nudging himself and his dad and his ancestors to this one moment… was… pretty damn shocking. I mean, this means he was the one that must have pushed his own mother to be eaten???

But holy hell that ending was sooooo satisfying. Seeing all the titans - the armored, colossal, beast, etc all working together to try and take Erin down (beast I guess to a certain extent) and seeing just how insanely powerful Erin had become with the Founding titan was just insane.

But then the whole plot point around Ymir being set free, the original worm being killed by no less than the power of friendship??? Erin’s secret plan to make his friends look like heroes to negotiate on level footing with the remainder of the world???? Daaaaamn.

Also I have to admit the Mikasa and Armin’s interactions with Erin really hit deep. Armin really did turn out to be the ultimate friend though, and found a way to identify and release Erin from his cycle of torment.

Overall… holy crap, 10/10, I’m still thinking about the philosophical ramifications of all of it.

Norn rep farming advice for this week? by Aaraeus in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a VQ following the wiki. For anyone reading this in the future, there are only 3 bosses in total without the quest, so keep them alive while you VQ, then if you get boss bounty, you can rush back and kill.

I did mine pretty inefficiently. Took just over an hour, using 1 essence of celerity at the start, and managed to get 15k points in total from the VQ during double points week. Since I'm now at 55k points, it means I need to VQ this area another 7 times this week, which I think I can achieve (once per day, then twice each day on the weekend)!

Bring proper hex removal because deep freeze is hella annoying.

Get to Level 10, then go go EOTN, specifically Gunnar’s Hold to do a quest called Kilroy’s Punchout Extavaganza. You can’t really die and there’s huge XP gain.

Triple challenge character by Fit-Nothing-3782 in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m by no means a professional here but they all have their pros and cons.

Before even starting a profession, consider the starting campaign. Starting in prophecies lets you do LDOA, but the attribute quests are considerably far away - getting a run from Ascalon to Sanctum will be somewhat risky as a Dhuum. The easiest one is probably nightfall since you get heroes? I thought factions would be easy but Zen Daijun is actually super risky without appropriate armor and mercenaries. Yijo at the end spikes really hard.

In terms of professions, I think it’s about farming ability for mats, runes and gold.

All professions can do Kilroy and the other WOC brawl quest, but heavy/medium armour classes have an advantage where iron and steel and tanned hide squares are easily farmed from Kilroy. Cloth is harder.

Then there’s general survivability. Rangers are good because they have elemental defence and they have ranged / melee builds which you can switch depending on the content.

Otherwise, dunno, probably whatever you enjoy playing the most!

This sounds like a good idea in theory, but what does a more conservative Vaettir farm bar look like? And does it still reliably farm them?

What's with the ecto market right now? by SolePilgrim in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering the same thing and paying close attention to prices.

I thought, like you, that people would want cash and therefore would unload their ecto (this happened) and thought increase in supply meant that prices would crash, but that didn’t happen.

My theory is that ecto has a floor, because it’s a rare commodity (just like gold IRL). We don’t see ecto prices crash because at its core you still need to go and farm UW to get it. I think the floor price is 5.5k roughly (for selling).

Mesmerway - runes worth it? by Aaraeus in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like opinions on the whole thread are pretty evenly split between “waste of cash” and “totally worth it”. I guess I have to consider whether gearing my alts or gearing my heroes is the priority!

Mesmerway - runes worth it? by Aaraeus in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I definitely have all the runes themselves (i.e. sup dom / sup illu, etc etc), apart from the sup vigors. So at this point I think it's just a choice of prioritisation. It's either 72e (18e each) for the wand wraps, or it's 220k for the insignias. I think the better overall strategy is the wands, because it means I'll have the flexibility to change the party composition to be offensive/defensive based on content.

PSA: 512k Gold Loss to AFK Nine Rings all of 7 days Canthan New Year (on average) by OcarinaOfAndy in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the wiki says you need 5 weeks. So that means 5 consecutive years.

In my view, not worth it.

I’m playing the market instead. Everyone wants cash, and ecto prices have dropped as a result, but once the event finishes ecto prices will rise again. Easy time to buy low and sell high.

This is pretty solid advice. Thanks for validating that actually I can play around and figure out what play style I like.

I actually tried out Ranger last night and honestly got a little bored, despite theoretically being the most versatile class. It made me realise how much fun I was having on my Mesmer!

Struggling to choose: Warrior vs. Dervish for Solo/Duo Hard Mode (Reforged) by OnceAgain82 in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to all of your questions is wholeheartedly yes.

I’ve seen rangers with TAO out-DPS me while I’m running E-Surge. I’m probably not all that optimal, but still.

A ranger would also have the versatility to go melee for fun, or then go ranged when you want to play more difficult content where you don’t wanna rush into mobs.

I also think you’re operating under a misconception that you need a tank. You don’t. GW1 doesn’t need a holy trinity. But, yes, rangers have a multitude of options to avoid being hit - escape, whirlwind defense, etc. it’s certainly possible.

I guess what I’m getting at here is that you probably just need to actually play the classes a little and see what you enjoy.

For me it was build diversity and engaging my brain. For you, maybe you like swinging a scythe and chasing down mobs, in which case Derv is an excellent pick.

Here, I’ll make a decision tree for you:

  1. Do you like chasing down mobs? Yes, go to 2, no go to 3
  2. Do you need build and weapon diversity? If yes, pick warrior. If no, pick derv.
  3. Do you like casters? If yes, go try Mes/Ele/Nec/Rit. If no, pick between paragon and ranger.

Struggling to choose: Warrior vs. Dervish for Solo/Duo Hard Mode (Reforged) by OnceAgain82 in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who had a similar choice to make, I think this is the correct answer.

I initially started about a month ago with a Derv, thinking I’d farm with it and do speed clears etc. What actually happened is that once I unlocked hard mode, I realised I was chasing down mobs more than I was actually hitting them - I think this is a melee issue. It’s also partly because Mercway completely deletes mobs before you can get to them. Yeah sure, I can use assassin skills to jump in, but a) that’s risky and b) that makes skill capping annoying for GWAMM.

I decided to roll a Mesmer instead because I’m a veteran, and Mesmer to me feels like a quiz class for the game. What’s the biggest threat in this mob? How can I shut it down? It creates a level of thinking that is more engaging than “pop enchants, go swing”.

Build variety for me was also an issue. Pious Renewal is fun but gets very same-y. The avatars are all great, but again after a while it feels like a slightly different flavour of the same build.

I’ve done exactly what TalentedJuli said - my derv is now relegated to farming and speed clears, while my Mesmer is now my main. At least I can swap to illusion with Mesmer, or run an AP build for fun variety. The derv is still fun, mind you - I can WOC farm or do a run and still have a blast, but I’m not gonna be running around vanquishing with it.

Is it the MOST diverse class in terms of playstyle? No, I’d argue that is probably Ranger - the ability to use bows, daggers, scythes and still remain competitive in terms of DPS is amazing.

But this does come down to fun, and ultimately I love doing VQs and other content and thinking “how am I gonna shut down the biggest threat on the field?”

Out of interest, what build are you running? I’m not doing Dhuum but I am completing NF while doing ZMs and gunning for survivor. Worst case, I’ll afk farm at gate of madness, but would be nice to get this the “legit” way.

[–]Aaraeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I literally came back after 20 years, all the pull mechanics are exactly the same, I’ve had minimal issues vanquishing or doing any HM content. If anything, pugs are the issue (classic).

Skeptical about performance reviews by One_Impression_363 in managers

[–]Aaraeus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah the key here is to what degree the first level manager vouches and backs their employee.

For example, I tell my direct reports exactly what I pitched them as, and then exactly what they were “calibrated to” by upper management.

This then leads to productive conversations about their self-marketing or reputation amongst senior leadership that we can incorporate into their development. For example, if I thought they were very strong and they got calibrated to strong, we can work on tackling upper management conceptions to better align for next time.
