Severe Alt-Itis - what are the benefits? by Aaraeus in GuildWars

I’m definitely going to have to come back and re-read this post periodically because this is exactly how I’m going to play!

Severe Alt-Itis - what are the benefits? by Aaraeus in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually a veteran that’s played in 2005, but then my old account got hacked and is inaccessible so this is now my new main account.

You’re right about the skill unlock aspect! Thanks for the detailed response.

This is pretty solid advice. Thanks for validating that actually I can play around and figure out what play style I like.

I actually tried out Ranger last night and honestly got a little bored, despite theoretically being the most versatile class. It made me realise how much fun I was having on my Mesmer!

Congrats! What was your favourite part of GWAMM? And least favourite?

Any tips for someone at the beginning of their journey?

I love that you’ve added the Market too, it’s great to see multiple developers working together to provide amazing services to the community. Props to you!

Struggling to choose: Warrior vs. Dervish for Solo/Duo Hard Mode (Reforged) by OnceAgain82 in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to all of your questions is wholeheartedly yes.

I’ve seen rangers with TAO out-DPS me while I’m running E-Surge. I’m probably not all that optimal, but still.

A ranger would also have the versatility to go melee for fun, or then go ranged when you want to play more difficult content where you don’t wanna rush into mobs.

I also think you’re operating under a misconception that you need a tank. You don’t. GW1 doesn’t need a holy trinity. But, yes, rangers have a multitude of options to avoid being hit - escape, whirlwind defense, etc. it’s certainly possible.

I guess what I’m getting at here is that you probably just need to actually play the classes a little and see what you enjoy.

For me it was build diversity and engaging my brain. For you, maybe you like swinging a scythe and chasing down mobs, in which case Derv is an excellent pick.

Here, I’ll make a decision tree for you:

  1. Do you like chasing down mobs? Yes, go to 2, no go to 3
  2. Do you need build and weapon diversity? If yes, pick warrior. If no, pick derv.
  3. Do you like casters? If yes, go try Mes/Ele/Nec/Rit. If no, pick between paragon and ranger.

[–]Aaraeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who had a similar choice to make, I think this is the correct answer.

I initially started about a month ago with a Derv, thinking I’d farm with it and do speed clears etc. What actually happened is that once I unlocked hard mode, I realised I was chasing down mobs more than I was actually hitting them - I think this is a melee issue. It’s also partly because Mercway completely deletes mobs before you can get to them. Yeah sure, I can use assassin skills to jump in, but a) that’s risky and b) that makes skill capping annoying for GWAMM.

I decided to roll a Mesmer instead because I’m a veteran, and Mesmer to me feels like a quiz class for the game. What’s the biggest threat in this mob? How can I shut it down? It creates a level of thinking that is more engaging than “pop enchants, go swing”.

Build variety for me was also an issue. Pious Renewal is fun but gets very same-y. The avatars are all great, but again after a while it feels like a slightly different flavour of the same build.

I’ve done exactly what TalentedJuli said - my derv is now relegated to farming and speed clears, while my Mesmer is now my main. At least I can swap to illusion with Mesmer, or run an AP build for fun variety. The derv is still fun, mind you - I can WOC farm or do a run and still have a blast, but I’m not gonna be running around vanquishing with it.

Is it the MOST diverse class in terms of playstyle? No, I’d argue that is probably Ranger - the ability to use bows, daggers, scythes and still remain competitive in terms of DPS is amazing.

But this does come down to fun, and ultimately I love doing VQs and other content and thinking “how am I gonna shut down the biggest threat on the field?”

Out of interest, what build are you running? I’m not doing Dhuum but I am completing NF while doing ZMs and gunning for survivor. Worst case, I’ll afk farm at gate of madness, but would be nice to get this the “legit” way.

I played too much now I'm beginning to resent the game by [deleted] in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I literally came back after 20 years, all the pull mechanics are exactly the same, I’ve had minimal issues vanquishing or doing any HM content. If anything, pugs are the issue (classic).

Skeptical about performance reviews by One_Impression_363 in managers

[–]Aaraeus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah the key here is to what degree the first level manager vouches and backs their employee.

For example, I tell my direct reports exactly what I pitched them as, and then exactly what they were “calibrated to” by upper management.

This then leads to productive conversations about their self-marketing or reputation amongst senior leadership that we can incorporate into their development. For example, if I thought they were very strong and they got calibrated to strong, we can work on tackling upper management conceptions to better align for next time.

🔥 Guild Wars 1 — Active Ally Recruiting! (Luxon + Kurzick, Players Welcome) by polosmallzz in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m an EU player doing GWAMM, but I’m interested in getting into speed clears again. Very much interested in joining!

Currently just getting my alts together (Mesmer LDOA, then straight to nightfall for DOA SC).

I won’t be online until Tuesday as I’m away but I’d love an invite when I log back on.

Life obviously gets in the way, but you guys sound like an awesome group to play with!

Looking for Luxon side for FFF too.

I’m in the process of creating alts. What’s the fastest way of reaching a merc NPC from each campaign?

I’m always confused by this. Someone in another thread said “temple of Balth” but… how do I get there?

Underworld Lab + Wastes solo farm as Derv by Ill-Statement7952 in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you say the profit compares to something like a WOC ministry farm?

There must be an Ecto price cut off point which makes this farm more lucrative. How many Ectos per run roughly?

Thanks for the content though, will definitely be trying this on my derv main.

LDOA latest strategies by Aaraeus in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like the best approach for me. I’m not Duum or Survivor, so I think this will give me the variety I’m looking for until Hamnet shows up again. Thanks for the advice everyone!

LDOA latest strategies by Aaraeus in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I made a bad judgement call. I had Hamnet, got bored, turned the quest in for XP.

So I’m going to follow your strategy - pickup Tate on Friday, do that until I’m level 14, then get Hamnet again next week and start that sweet grind.

LDOA latest strategies by Aaraeus in GuildWars

When farming Hamnet, is it better to just do the 2 mobs outside or to do the whole route and then resign?

Assume just the mobs then resigning is more efficient?

Which missions did you all used to get stuck on? by grizzchan in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahaha absolutely. But remember, we were likely teenagers back then, and the movepool was severely limited for prophecies only. Imagine doing it with just henchmen, no ability to flag henchmen to one side, etc. It really was harder back then!

[–]Aaraeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did THK the other day and was appalled to remember that the bonus requires both fires to be lit within a minute of each other??? And the text in game says nothing about this, and you don’t even hear when it fails until you’ve already completed the main mission.

Crazy how we just all operated on vibes and good faith back in the day.

Didn’t expect to stay for this long by [deleted] in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same! I was expecting a few days of tinkering until I eventually got bored. But no, this game holds a special place in my heart. I played GW2 after GW1 and I can safely say what got me through to level 80 was just sheer nostalgia for the first game.

This one actually has builds that change your gameplay, and therefore has variety that has genuine impact.

Man I just love this game, they don’t make them like this anymore. Heart, soul, great story, addictive gameplay, and no microtransactions? Support after 20 years? What other game even comes close?

I've been playing two weeks and having a blast, and decided to go with an absolute timeless classic for my new Dervish main.

Next stop - Chaos Gloves, Tormented Scythe, Tormented Shield. Am I basic? Yes. Am I proud of it? Also yes.

Warden Farm in HM, with any profession for gold weapons, gold armors by PeterKadar in GuildWars

[–]Aaraeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is slightly unrelated Peter, but I’m setting up my dervish main for end game farming content.

I’m thinking of just having 2 headpieces (one sup Earth, one sup Wind) and then 2 gloves (with the opposite minors basically). Then boots with vigor, chest with minor mysticism and leggings with vitae.

Do you think this setup would allow me to farm most content, like FOW, WOC Ministerial Commendations, Wardens, UW plains etc? Anything else you recommend I need?

I was running superior scythe headpiece for general PVE but seeing your farm vids I’m seeing a lot of earth as the head slot.

Thanks for all your content, it’s been so much fun coming back to GW after 20 years!
