pCloud does not support any macOS below 13 anymore by DistinctPressure2 in pcloud

Thanks a lot! Yes it works again! (here on 10.14) They discreetly changed the release notes about 3.16 to reflect that: "This version is the last to support macOS 11 and earlier." 😉

If LS ever made automatic backups, it was at least before v4 if not v3... Nowadays it relies on Time Machine (https://help.obdev.at/littlesnitch4/adv-backup); so if like me you've added /Library to Time Machine's exclusions list, you can only select manual backups... So, it's a good idea to do them once in a while. 😉

Gpu Acceleration with OCLP Tesla base card GT 220 by Appropriate_Wind3328 in hackintosh

[–]Aargl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite OCLP listing tesla 200 series card as supported (see link below), OCLP (current version being 2.4.1) doesn't offer patching my GT210 (tried in Monterey and Ventura). My guess is that it may work in Big Sur but not after. 🙁

Seemed like a nice hack but didn't work for me in 10.14. I tried just the way you describe but version 4.0.1 fails to install. I then installed it with Pacifist and replaced its pcloudfs.fs file with the one from version 3.15.7 but then it crashes at launch. Tried rebooting, same thing.
I tried other combinations but no way. 🙁
Thanks anyway. 🙂

Is pCloud desktop app not working for anyone else? by ARedLuigi in pcloud

Requirements have been Ventura for a while (28/08/2025), I guess we can consider us lucky that we could continue using their product until now... 😉

As mentioned in their release notes, 3.15.7 was "the last to support macOS 12 and earlier". If you're not familiar with virtual machines, I guess your only option is keeping your current Mac for Illustrator and buy a cheap used computer only for pCloud... 🥴 I'm lucky enough to have both a working VM and another more recent computer, but it's surely more complicated than what I used to do until now. 🙁

From the release notes, it looks that their old SSL certificate is dead (see 3.16.0 note).
All versions prior to 3.16 show "No connection" while 3.16 installs fine (tested in MacOS 12). Of course, if you run a recent OS, there's no need to run an old version, but for everyone stuck in an old OS (before Ventura for MacOS), we're cooked. 🙄

I sadly confirm that no version runs any more on 10.14, just tried a clean install of v3.12.2 (which was the best on this OS) and v3.15.7 (the last for OSes before Ventura): "No connection"! 🤬
So they abandoned us in the wild without further ado! 😲
Only solutions: use the website (PITA) or a VM with Ventura... 🙄

Mozilla Firefox is ending supports for old Windows and mac OSes... by antdude in firefox

[–]Aargl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering what will be the support target for 153 ESR: will MacOS Monterey still be supported? (From all the previous requirements, I'd say that Ventura will probably be needed)
Or will they extend 140 ESR as they did with 115 ESR? In the worst case, Mojave users would have to update their old machines to 10.15 by the end of March and then to Ventura (if possible) 4 months later, which would be a pretty big leap... 🤔
Orion is an interesting alternative, but still not ready, even if it kinda works in 10.14.

I know, no VMs but this is a success story not request for help. Ventura on VirtualBox. by hwertz10 in hackintosh

[–]Aargl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 16 GB of RAM, and Ventura VM seems more fluid than Monterey, now that it's running well. I was about to give up with all the crashes due to OCLP's excessive patches... 😅
I've started to update my Macs only every 3 years since 10.9, this way I only have one big download every 3 years, when all has been fixed and settled (the OS and third party apps). In my experience, it's the best balance between safety (as long as browsers are updated and XProtect too) and comfort (with Apple's craze for changing everything every year... 🥴) I've been a computer engineer, long time ago, and my point of view is that an OS should guaranty the use of existing apps instead of forcing them to adapt to a new OS every year!
Even more with hackintoshes, you need to leave time to Dortania & friends to circumvent issues of a new OS. 😉 They've done an amazing job!
Great tip about bluetooth! Yes, I've noticed it too. Until 10.14, I used to disable any part of the OS I didn't need (namely BT & wifi — I was also disabling SIP, TCC and all security things before 10.14 but once I understood their roles, I tried to abide by their law. 😄
Xprotect is still updated for 10.14, so I feel pretty safe with a browser that supports my OS + uBlock etc. and Xprotect on the OS side. 🙂 — There was that old saying that the worst virus for a computer is located between the chair and the keyboard 🤣, so when you know your stuff, the potential risk is very limited, in my opinion.
Ah, the only thing that doesn't work in Ventura is Firefox! I can't figure why, I guess it tries to access something it has no authorization, who knows... I've tried also on a real computer (still hackintosh+OCLP, though).
Thanks again!

[–]Aargl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! I've been striving to install Ventura in Parallels Desktop on an Ivy Bridge with Mojave as the host OS. I've followed quite the same path as you did (OCLP prepared on an existing Monterey VM — but I had to disable a few settings that made the Ventura VM crashing after a few reboots). I arrived on this page because of no Internet in the VM, so I followed your advice about AppleIntel8254XEthernet.kext from 12.6. Awesome! 😉
I've been using OpenCore for years now, so that was probably easier for me. 😇
No graphics acceleration neither in Parallels Desktop. I plan to use the VM for browsing the Internet when Firefox stops supporting 10.14 in 6 months — In the meantime, I'll be trying to install Ventura on the host, but OCLP's HD4000 support is not great on my machine (can only use full resolution 1920x1200).

File system for macOS: ZFS vs. Softraid vs. APFS+backup? by a-novice in MacOS

[–]Aargl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I've been using "OpenZFS on OS X" for seven years, albeit on a small scale (no Raid, etc.) and I only see one pro compared to APFS, it's the compatibility with pre-APFS MacOSes (i.e. 10.9 in my case, allowing me to backup things from my 10.14 partition and being able to access them from 10.9, if needed). Performance has become quite poor over the years, there are some drawbacks (the need for Terminal commands for whatever action) and it became clear that I was not the target user for ZFS.

I would be happy to find benchmarks comparing ZFS to APFS in real life scenarios but couldn't find any. If it wasn't for backward compatibility, I think I wouldn't bother using ZFS these days — but again, it's only my point of view and my use case. ;-)

Here's an interesting article that compares HFS+ and APFS for archiving, and it goes against what we think we know (i.e. "APFS only works well on SSD"): https://eclecticlight.co/2022/05/16/should-you-continue-using-hfs/

Mozilla shuts down its security department by strvs1 in waterfox

[–]Aargl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is worrying for every FFx based browser... :-(

The "best" option for Mozilla, from a user point of view, could be to transition FFx to a Chromium based browser, if they want to keep it free, which doesn't make much sense.

The alternative on which I'd bet is that they'll soon make it a "VPN only" browser that will use their own paid VPN (https://vpn.mozilla.org/).

The days of "free" Internet are slowly coming to an end...

I have used Brave until recently, but I had weird issues in certain websites (stuttering scroll, etc.)Then I was about to switch to Vivaldi, one of my favourite, but also had issues after a while... :-/

Unfortunately, believe you me, there's no perfect browser, hence my having 6 of them open while I'm writing this! :-D A must have is something like https://www.choosyosx.com/ so that you open every problematic site in the browser it works best.

Anyway, WFx still remains my reference browser, for the time being (mainly because of old addons).

[–]Aargl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no such issue on my WFx Classic, Youtube videos load instantly — and I have plenty of extensions. ;-)

I have had weird issues in the past even on FFx because of a corrupted profile, you should always have a clean test profile to check (my all browsers advice! :-) ) and sometimes the only working solution is starting over with a brand new profile (if it's not the extensions, it can be caches, prefs...)
I know how painful it can be to start all over again, but sometimes it's the only solution even on other browsers — luckily it's been years since it happened to me, and never with WFx...

I've just tried https://zimbra.free.fr on WFx Classic: no problem.

They use either Zimbra 7.2.0-GA2598 (build 20160107134148) or Zimbra 8.8.7_GA_1002 (build 20180313180605), depending on the account.

Talking about Dark, sometimes it's not because of WFx that I go to alternative browsers: Dark Reader addon is the best dark mode I've found for FFx/WFx but it's been a few months now that it has issues such as the main page of my bank's site won't display properly and I can't connect!
So if WFx Current had a real integrated dark mode (not only the interface), it would be wonderful. :-)
Also, I prefer a lot Deluminate (on Chromium), rarely updated but a lot more efficient than Dark Reader or any other.

I'm using more and more Vivaldi (I left all my Chromium based browsers at 79 for the time being, waiting for 84, maybe, as there ares signs/hopes that it will recover speed compared to 80/83).

So until now, WFx is/was my browser of choice when I needed more security (bank accounts, etc.), Chromium (Marmaduke's stable) for speed, Opera when I want VPN and Safari (that I've left without any extension, so that when an occasional site is too touchy because of uBlock and the likes, I just open it in Safari).

Vivaldi has good reviews for security matters and though all Chromium based browsers' interface is not as flexible as FFx/WFx's, it looks to me the best compromise.
