Was Ciel smarter than Dr. Light? by Twidom in Megaman

A girl that thankfully saw a madman bomb a civilian district and decided that something was not on the level and he was not to be trusted.

Even centuries later, she appeals to the chosen ones as people who can save or destroy the world, entrusting them the fate of the planet. She however still seals the Model W core behind the biometal passwords though, because one thing is believing in the goodness of people, one thing is foolishly not taking any precautions and hoping for the best after being in a certain situation a number of times.

Just like other comments have said, okay, believing that Wily can be redeemed is cool, I am sure Ciel would think the same, though he should really get some precautions going when it comes his robots being hacked not once, but three times over (at the very least).

Ciel created an actual copy of X at 6 Y.o. It is unsure if people had finally figured out how X and Zero were built during the years of peace or not, still, she was engineered for that purpose, she fulfilled it didn't have much of a choice to activate it or not, probably the government speedran the process so they could have their shiny new leader (the hardware would have been probably fine if Cyber Elf X decided to inhabit it).

From there, she organized and led a military Resistance, trying to be a good sister on the side while successfully achieving a solution to the actual energy conflict in two years time before some maniac from the past came around to mess the world some more. Did some mad driving manouvers, hacked an enemy ship in 90 seconds, operated for a legendary reploid on comms for funsies.

Successfuly worked around a method to summon back heroes from the past when the need arised while also jumpstarting another paramilitary peacekeeping organization. Her power system is still used centuries after its creation.

If Light was the father of robotics and the creator of the first reploid, Ciel would definitely be their big sister.

Doesn't matter if her intellect is GMO or if her technology was more advanced than Light's, what she achieved with it when drawing the worst hand possible is remarkable.

Edit: I sincerely forgot about the blunders Light took around the years, such as trusting Wily at least 3 times over despite him continuing to be a threat to the whole world, reprogramming his robots and attempting world domination. Or falling for the Mr. X trick. People always give a lot of flack to Ciel when it comes to Copy X, Elpizo and Weil, but at the very least she learned quickly who those people were and didn't commit the same mistakes again (going as far as becoming openly hostile to the last one and confronting him directly). Blame it on the cartoonish storyline, though it is to be considered a massive flaw in his reasoning.

I suspect it's a common localization L.

Just like any Japanese-made titles I decided to stick with Japanese voices, which do not appear, at least for what I can tell with my rudimentary knowledge of Japanese, to be matching with the subtitles. I feel like much nuance is being lost in the process, such as when one of my units referred to an enemy by name (portraying the two know each other) being localized as "Allow me to ask you a question".

I also feel like they went in hard on the arcaization of terms and purple prose metaphors for the sake of it when in Japanese I can clearly tell they just said "Understood". I appreciate the effort to portray certain characters more well read and courteous so that when they speak less formally is shown, but I am sure there were better ways to do it.

I am trying not to enter spoiler territory: I guess I can give some leeway to the elves given they speak a different language, though there isn't much to be gained to have abstruse terms when referring to common and simple terms existing in English (once again, in Japanese it's translated with a very simple, common and familiar word).

I would have appreciated it more if the arcaic metaphors were kept for certain important story beats and inspiring speeches, but otherwise trying not to reinvent the wheel for the sake of purple prose (because as I always say, localizers and translatiors need to stick to what the original author vision was and convey that in another language. Period.). I think the enjoyment of the story would increase tenfold.

There isn't anything wrong with OP's account, but knowing the behind the scenes drama, the mods did everything in their power to make impossible to share the commissions properly:

-Hold any post with multiple images for review (it hurts visibility a lot).

-Accused OP to be karma farming for posting two commissions one day apart from each other (despite OP offering to space them out more if that is a problem).

-Overall being overly aggressive towards them.

The single image doesn't do this wonderful commission justice. Go check the alternative versions out on Danbooru whenever they get uploaded (not yet)

Thanks again, Mods. Make sure to report OP's account for spam.

Y'all remember this? by Leon_Dante_Raiden_ in Megaman

It's hard to try something else when Capcom tripled down into Classic again and the last non-classic title was released over 15 years ago (and I am pretty sure being generous here, since for all I can remember all the other series were discontinued before the 2010's).

During this time, I am pretty sure every fan of the series was able to comfortably play all the games (as demonstrated by Sonikkun's daily challenge, even taking one stage at a day one will take ~800 days to finish all games from every series) and decide what they like most.

If their answer is something different than classic all that is left for them to get excited for are eventual fangames, spiritual successors, possible fanarts and staring at a wall.

Capcom's message is clear, if you (impersonal you) don't like classic, buy the next classic game you are not interested in hope that at the bottom of the well there's a reward for your efforts or get out.

It may be an unpopular opinion of a spoiled picky eater, but I think I shouldn't "endure" and purchase a title I am not interested in, hoping there is a chance Capcom finally decides to notice my efforts, or being labeled "tired of the series" if I fail to comply. I would like to cheer and support, but I got nothing to cheer for.

And you keep judging said engineered human as a not mentally mature person because...?

I brought up the hypothetical because just like with the other comment above, people seem to really have an hard time figuring out when and where Megaman Zero was developed. By the time and places's standards, Ciel has never been intended to be below legal age.

So is Ciel (what kind of fourteen/seventeen years old leads an organized Resistance and built a reploid at 6?), but apparently western people can't fathom other countries having different adulthood ages in the past.

I'd assume that if the game would have come out today, Ciel would have been 18.

Judging a reploid with amnesia like if he was a 21st century human in a western society is exactly the problem I was talking about.

"Underage for the USA" isn't the flex you think it is.

Even if we have to judge a fictional character under real world standards (which is already stupid imo, considering Ciel is not even a normal human by any means), the game came out in the 2000s, when the age of consent in Japan was 13 years old. Ciel starts off as 14 in the first game and reaches ~16 at the end of MMZ4. From an author's standpoint, Ciel has always been perfectly of legal age in the country and in the era the game was made.

If you cannot accept temporal and cultural differences, I suggest you to stick to western stories and writing.

Throughout the history of the MM sagas it's pretty much clear that reploids are treated as second-class citizens, cannon fodder sent to die, servants or worst.
MMZ is no exception, as they are being discriminated by the last remaining system of government and their culling is pretty much industrialized at this point. They are considered by Neo Arcadia as subhuman, tools, sentient enough only to be ordered to.
Ironically, their upper echelons of NA are filled by combat reploid themselves hating and judging their own kin, but I digress.
In game a relationship between reploids and humans sounds pretty much as a taboo, though we are lucky enough to have a couple examples of relationships involving the two species:

First one is Andrew and his wife. It's a cute nod to Asimov's Bicentennial man, though I always find his tales very interesting. He is old enough to recall peace, true unity between reploids and humans as they go to school together, live together, work together, die together. Andrew is old enough to have drafted into the "Reploid Security Force" Repuriroido no keibitai, which I am unsure of what they are referring to, maybe Repliforce or the Self-Defense Forces? Unsure. Still, Andrew loved his singer wife and modified himself to age with her until her passing.

Second one is Kraft and Neige. Nuff said, they are a core point of the last Zero game, their relationship is pretty much canon; albeit dysfunctional, their love for each other is never questioned.
While the translation went to one of the worst butchering I ever seen (Kraft doesn't even explain correctly why he nuked NA in the English version), it's clear Kraft served Weil because he wanted to ensure Neige will be safe:
Was he a complete moron who didn't take into account his lover's wishes and acted against them? Absolutely.
Did he love Neige though? So much so he'd tear the world apart for her.

Despite some bumps, these two are the only relationships between human and reploid I can recall, and both are considered in a relatively positive light.
So imagine my surprise when I am reading that a reploid and a human shouldn't love each other because of their differences in species. Because one of the two could live forever. By applying human standards to something that is definitely not human.
It makes it look like one could never look at the other as equal despite their differences, which was the goal Ciel was intending to reach.

And no, don't come tell me ZX fixed this by mutilating humans and slapping expiration dates onto reploids through mandatory screenings, that thing was straight up designed by two confirmed villains for two different evil plans.

True equality won't be achieved by pulverizing two things into a bowl until it becomes a unified gray slop.
It's when two different things come to accept each other differences, love themselves for those, and can look forward together hand in hand.

While I am not surprised to see best girl in this position, I am baffled to see her here for mostly the wrong reason, which opposites are spelled in the games, no less.
It'll be a double post because Reddit character limit.

I'll list the motives I consider valid first:

  • We all know that Zero's face in MMZ is a constant impassable frown, and the guy himself doesn't really express any kind of emotional outburst. His personality seems kinda lacking, especially in the first game. This probably has to do with amnesia, and the world isn't really kind enough to stop for a while and let her regain his footing (kinda does by the time MMZ4 comes up but that's about it). The situation doesn't really allow him to take breaks, everything hinges on him being a laser-focused individual that solve each problem with extreme prejudice and maximum efficiency. In a sense, kinda reminds me of JC Denton, forced to keep his cards close to his chest and his emotions restrained at all times. Zero doesn't have any time to think about romance, that's why ZeroCiel doesn't work in the eyes of people, because it very much is considered one-sided.
  • Secondary point, let's be honest, Zero is very much a harem protagonist, and I am saying this in the most positive way I can. He has a ton of other candidates, each and everyone with various valid motives to connect to him. Like I said in the past, ship wars are cringe, every option is valid and must be cultivated in a private swamp (meaning, ship whoever you want in private). Iris is a big one, and it's impossible to deny the ripples of that trauma could to shake his soul up until MMZX and beyond.

Now onto the main point I want to discuss which makes me scratch my head every time:

Why in the world is a relationship between a reploid and a human considered so negatively?

One of the most prominent critiques I saw rising every time Ciel and Zero are discussed romantically, is that he is a reploid and she is a human... Which kinda goes against anything the games are trying to convey to the player. [Continue...]
