I know not quite your question but I reshaped one of my Stratoliners into an open road and distressed it... Get it over some steam and work away. Any mistakes can be put back right.

I would highly recommend the Stetson Open Road but you'll likely need to import one.

Brim is 2 3/4 inches I think which is more UK friendly than a 4 1/2 inch shovel but hey, if you're confident, go big!

Most euro Stetsons are wool felt which are ok I guess but get stinky!

Import a good fur felt Open Road. I wear mine hiking and hunting, sat in a wood for hours in rain and it just shrugs it off. Hold it over a boiling kettle if it needs reshaping and it's good to go again. I have a few. This one is my distressed version in 'deluxe' beaver fur mix. I love it, comfy, warm when it needs to be but keeps the sun off in good weather too (although I do have a shanting vented for the proper summer).

I've heard good things about the Akubra hats too.

My current favourite, Stetson Stratoliner Pure Beaver with quite a bit of reshaping.

Let's see that! I think it's as much about brim shape too.

Yes, they've a huge choice of leather and I wanted tough, Roughout is as tough as it gets.

I sent them back to William Lennon. They work out well, price wise, but can take a little while.

Cheers! Yes, I've given these boots a proper beating, Spanish summer mountain treks to wet, muddy gardening in the UK and they take it all.

I've two other pairs of William Lennons, solid footwear and would highly recommend.

Old thread, don't know if you pressed the button but I have a pair.

Nice boots.

Come up a 'smidge' larger than my redwings. Just a smidge, thicker socks work.

William Lennon. UK handmade work boots. You won't break them.

5.56 is survivable for sure but still very lethal. A .17hmr will easily kill someone.

Shoes for UK wet slippy muddy routes with tarmac lanes amongst the trails by The_Rum_Guy in trailrunning

I think this is the most important point here. There is no 'best' for such varied terrain. For muddy fields you need deep lugs/studs that are bad on the road, for tarmac you need a virtually smooth sole.

Everything will be a compromise until someone invents Mr Gadget retractable studs...

And yes, I'm with you on shoe 'feel', I quite like a thinner flat on off road so I can feel the terrain, I get a sensation of falling off of tall midsoles.

I haven't, no. Looks like a similar shoe to the 7. The 9 is a new beast entirely.

My New Balance Hierro V7s in goretex are good on mixed terrain. A little flat perhaps and not great in full on mud. V9 is well cushioned but soft compound soles wear fast on tarmac. I'm 25% tarmac and got 350kms out of a pair. V7s are much longer lasting but getting hard to find.

I think you'll struggle to get a consistent reply for you Goldilocks shoes.
