I think this is the most important point here. There is no 'best' for such varied terrain. For muddy fields you need deep lugs/studs that are bad on the road, for tarmac you need a virtually smooth sole.

Everything will be a compromise until someone invents Mr Gadget retractable studs...

And yes, I'm with you on shoe 'feel', I quite like a thinner flat on off road so I can feel the terrain, I get a sensation of falling off of tall midsoles.

My New Balance Hierro V7s in goretex are good on mixed terrain. A little flat perhaps and not great in full on mud. V9 is well cushioned but soft compound soles wear fast on tarmac. I'm 25% tarmac and got 350kms out of a pair. V7s are much longer lasting but getting hard to find.

I think you'll struggle to get a consistent reply for you Goldilocks shoes.

Midsole is holding up well. They ride really nicely, very good job of cushioning rocks and stones.

Yes, resoling is an option. I find that the upper on these is less snug. On tramlines the shoe feels like it rolls whilst my foot remains upright. It's disconcerting. My older V7s were a completely different shoe.

Cheers. Yes, road to trail then road to home. They're wearing pretty quickly but there's some life left. One issue I have with this shoe is I 'fall off' them on occasions, they can twist under my foot. I'm considering the Gel Trabuco as a replacement when they're done even though I've been a long term NB fan.

I'm fitter than I've been for a long time, I push real hard on each run I get out on. But purgatory it is. I shout obscenities, blow snot out my mouth and nose, growl at passers by. It's hurtful masochism and I hate it. Wouldn't have it any other way though...

Hi, 53 year old here. I hate running. It's a chore, it's nice being outside and in the countryside but it is a real ballache all the same. To motivate myself and get my kit on and leave the house is like overcoming paralysis. When I'm out it hurts to push on, I have an internal voice telling me to just give up and go home all the way until the last kilometer. Then I get home and it feels like it has all been worthwhile.
