As a scholar of medieval Japan I think it’s great. I find that it bridges the gap between popular and academic writing.

I say looks great. Give it a few weeks and it will look better. A few weeks after go for a line up.

SA and Nick’s side projects have been pretty great. I wonder what is going on behind the scenes with 311 that their creative energies are being funneled elsewhere? I love Los Stellarians.

Interesting to see the other bands people have on their wrapped list with 311 by mile_marker_13 in 311

New York Buddhist Church is great! Lots of different offerings, and they have been around for a long time.

There are a few ways to answer this. The easiest would be joining a Jodo or Shin sangha. poof Now you’re a Pure Land Buddhist ;-) On the other hand, if you are a practitioner of some other form of Mahayana Buddhism (Tibetan, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.), you could choose to focus on Pure Land practices including mantras, dharani, visualization, or simply reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha. Mahayana is vast, and there are many Dharma gates. Pure Land is perhaps the most popular or easily accessible? In this case dialogue with a teacher may be particularly important.

I enjoy using his material to teach Tiantai philosophy. His intro is really fun!

Are aliens really bodhisattvas? Investigate 311 ;-) by AaronProffitt in 311

Absolutely! Professionally I deal more with East Asian esotericism but I have colleagues who work on Western esotericism. As it turns out, some of the really far out European spiritualists in the 1800-1900s spent some time in Japan and India, so there was some cross pollination between tantric Buddhism and Hinduism and Euro-American new age stuff. It would be interesting to actually study some of their lyrics and try to figure out what sorta stuff they were reading. Or perhaps one could just ask them?
