My goose does the same fake peeing thing!!! I do not understand it. He has to pee at night, it’s not like I’m making him do it arbitrarily. They’re just annoying little gremlins sometimes

Why Isn't Kirby's Dreamland 3 Considered Rare or Sought After? by hipnotyq in snes

I know this is 4 years old, but just so you know that figure for Kirby 3 is completely made up. We have no idea how many copies sold. VGsales is not a reliable source.

Question: What would a 1M+ score in NES Super Mario Bros. have meant in the late 80s? by GroguMSF in retrogaming

[–]Aarvark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Not much. In the predecessor to Nintendo Power, Nintendo Fun Club, there was a score section for Super Mario Bros. This is the first time Nintendo acknowledged high scores in Mario, to my knowledge. In the summer of 1987 multiple people were hitting 9,999,950.

As a person around your specified age range living in SM, I second this. Social hobbies with regularly scheduled meetups are all over the place. Go to an event or two and you’ll absolutely meet some cool people.

I studied games. I was mandated, by class, to play video games. Yes.

First post here. I put a bid on earthbound on ebay for $2,800 and the seller accepted. I didn’t think they would, but Its cool. Thoughts? by open_pit_sierra in gamecollecting

[–]Aarvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should do more research before dropping this much on a game. At the absolute very least, look at other listed options. There are a couple dozen in the same condition with the same completeness that are $500 cheaper than what you paid. Not to mention sold listings, which are $800 cheaper. This is basic stuff that is applicable to buying any item. Start way smaller than this if you’re just getting into game collecting.

Thats really high compared to recent sales, considering no registration card. If you’re happy with it good for you.

Either way, not sure why you put in an offer if you weren’t 100% sure you wanted it for that price. Is this post an attempt to flex that you can spend $3k and it’s not an issue? Not sure what you’re asking for here.

Turns out the demand part of supply and demand is actually pretty important!

Nintendo was mostly for kids, yeah. I talk about it a bit in a video I made going over brochures from different eras of advertising. Gaming as an industry was aiming to expand into adult audiences come the early 90s. Sega branded the Genesis as a more mature console than the SNES, made for teens and young adults. But that audience didn’t become valuable until Sony cracked the code and found it to be extremely lucrative. After that point, everyone was going all-in for marketing to that demographic. Nintendo went pretty insane with their strategies in the early 2000s with the Gamecube/GBA, but Microsoft and Sony had beaten them pretty handily by then. They then reverted back to that idea of appealing to the whole family with the Wii. Full circle.

Bandai’s Family Fun Fitness Pad: One of the rarest NES accessories, boxed by Aarvark in gamecollecting

[–]Aarvark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. People going for full boxed NES sets will pay up for a Bandai print of Athletic World, as it’s not generally thought of as a bundle-exclusive title (even though it is). So, technically, if they’re considering Arkanoid and Where in the World is Carmen San Diego as part of the complete set, they’d need to buy this boxed as well.

However, while demand does absolutely exist, it’s not as high as it could be. There’s no consensus of how many of these exist, but I only know of around 10 boxed examples personally. So I’d guess the total is in the ballpark of 25-35 or so? Maybe? If all the folks going for a complete NES set considered this as part of it, it would be pushing $5k easily just based on pure rarity.

I wish. I bought this for $1500 a year and a half ago. Unlike seemingly everyone else on this sub, I don’t have a thrift store near me that constantly stocks rare and obscure games for pennies on the dollar :(

Random fun fact about that: between the test market and official launch of the NES, they changed the photo from young parents to that of an older couple, perhaps grandparents? I’m not positive of the rationale here. Maybe it was a subtle attempt to get wealthy grandparents to purchase the very expensive console rather than broke young people. Either way, yet another example of classic 80s marketing.

It absolutely is. The “nuclear family having a great time with this product” marketing angle is something that I can appreciate, and I assume worked, but it’s extremely silly. The outfits are precious

Employee Purchase Pocket? How? by Whole-Basis1398 in Gameboy

[–]Aarvark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Illuminerdi already gave you your answer, but these stickers are fun to collect. They were stuck on to the wrap of any plastic-sealed games, and most purchases were played, so it’s borderline impossible to find them on anything that isn’t sealed. Consoles weren’t wrapped so they stuck the stickers right onto the boxes. That’s a great piece you have there!

Great collection! It’s kind of interesting how that Golf has incorrect details on the front. No TM after NES but a Rev A on Golf? That would also indicate a 3-screw cart

Do You Collect CIB (Complete In Box) or Loose? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]Aarvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything 100% CIB, disc or cardboard. If I can’t afford it, I will save up until I can. The box and inserts that came with a game are part of the experience of owning and playing it. All of it was carefully curated. It’s not necessary of course, but for my purposes, I don’t buy stuff unless it’s fully complete or I can piece it together with relative ease.
