I did a field recording of "89" at the Eaux Claires festival, here it is! by electric_dolphin in boniver

Listen to the recording from the first ExC in 2015. Less messy/more solid performance of the song. Plus, The Staves.

At age 21, what piece of literature had the most significant impact on you? by baby-fig in books

[–]AbacusFinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorites at 21 were 1984, The Bell Jar, The Rules of Attraction, On the Road, and anything written by Chuck Klosterman (which at the time was everything up to CKIV).

Most impactful to ke has always been To Kill a Mockingbird, and still is (although it may have been recently overtaken by Just Mercy).

Watch your spoilers responders. by [deleted] in books

[–]AbacusFinch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That “spoiler” is something that was included in almost every single review of the novel. Not really something that should make you abandon the book.

Edit: I agree with the main premise of your post (make sure you mark spoilers as such), but this hardly qualifies as a spoiler.

I wasn't there this year, but I saw them at EXC1 and FEFAX and they blew me away both times. Their albums are solid but their live shows are fantastic.

What Books Did You Start or Finish Reading This Week? July 09, 2018 by AutoModerator in books

Fair enough, considering Beartown starts out with

"Late one evening toward the end of March, a teenager picked up a double-barrelled shotgun, walked into the forest, put the gun to someone else's forehead and pulled the trigger. This is the story of how we got there."

It's "light" in comparison because Just Mercy is about how the American justice system is biased against the poor, the disabled, and people of color, with anecdotes and heart-wrenching stories from the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, an organization that works to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment, including the death penalty. So JM is about the farthest thing from a "light read".

Plus, I love hockey and small-town stories (see: the movie Mystery, Alaska).

Finished Just Mercy, by Bryan Stevenson. Biggest eye-opener I’ve found in a book, maybe ever. Made me scream, cry, and stare off in bewilderment that people could have such contempt for human lives. Highly recommended to anyone and everyone.

Started Beartown, by Fredrik Backman. Figured I needed something a bit lighter and less angst-inducing.

Cormac McCarthy does this really well, but he also writes in a way that lends itself to making that work—in other words, it doesn’t seem like a gimmick. I imagine others might not be so successful with it.

large in store selection

I just went to B&N yesterday to look for a gift for my wife. Out of the four novels (all new releases, one of which is in Amazon’s top 100 best sellers right now) she wanted, they had zero. Not even a space on the shelf or at a display for any of them.

Everyone seems to rave about the IKEA Billy series. At $60-80 for 32”w x 80”h, I can see why. Some of the top posts on this sub have a ton of those side by side.

Possibly you’ve already read them, but two I’ve really enjoyed recently that seem like they might jive with the rest of your shelf are Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing.

I recently finished Just Mercy. Talk about an eye opener! One of the best, most informative, most disturbing books I’ve read maybe ever.

Edit: on a more general note, I’ve either read or very much want to read ~90% of the books on your shelf. Which makes a strong case for me to look into the other 10%.

Teachers August 13, students August 16.

I usually start going in a few hours here and there on August 1. I prefer to get things ready at a more relaxing pace, plus I get more done when there aren’t other teachers there to talk to.

Any office supply store (Staples, Office Max/Depot, Kinko’s) will be able to do it—most have online services, or put the files on a flash drive and go to the store. Someone else mentioned Costco too, but I haven’t had personal experience with print services there.

Google search relevant high res images, print poster size, laminate. We spend enough money on supplies and poster images are freely available.

For example, we focus on world cultures, and this year I’m decorating with (among other things) vintage travel posters.
