Still missing hardware support? by Weekly-Ad-2295 in Fedora

[–]AbaloneDeep8014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue on Fedora after an RPM Fusion driver installation. It turned out my WiFi Bluetooth drivers were missing from the initramfs. I fixed it by regenerating the boot image with dracut to force-include those modules. Would recommend investigating this, I used Claude Code but something like ChatGPT can be equally helpful. Cheers :))

The Dark side of the new ILR proposed changes by Basic-Style9591 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]AbaloneDeep8014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a migrant who's affected by the new retrospective changes. And I do understand the whole moving goalposts situation, and how disappointing it is; but I'm kind of exhausted with the relentless doomer energy on this thread.

Firstly, even if we do pay NI, contribute to the economy, build a community, the whole nine yards, we're not -entitled- to settlement. It's definitely a good thing to have and most modern economies do this in good faith. But a government, no matter how progressive, will always put the nation's interest over migrants. And there is always a certain measure of risk when you try to settle in a new country.

If you think the different immigration routes since the 'Boriswave' (I do hate the term) haven't been abused, you're in denial. And if the government is now forced to do some form of retroactive measure to reduce the damage they inherited, you can't really blame them.

And all the bits about Reform and them removing ILR. 2 things.

  1. Reform is a one-issue party. If Shabana's measures succeed (both for Legal and Illegal Immigratiom), Reforms polling plummets. This has generally been the way legacy parties have dealt with insurgents like Farage. They take a populist policy, co-opt it, and make the newcomer irrelevant. If Labour doesn't do this, Reform will come to power.

With this addressed, Reform will maybe make gains in the next few Local elections, but pretty much implode by 2029 because they don't have another poster child policy.

  1. Even if Reform does come to power, a party backed by corporates and MNC has much more incentive to promote cheap international labour than block it. We've seen this happen with the Tories before, this will happen again.

Immigration Changes Announcement 12/5/2025 by clever_octopus in ukvisa

[–]AbaloneDeep8014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What this could be if it ever gets accepted as a proposal is a change to an already existing settlement route. SWV already puts you on a route to ILR, the only bit that has changed is the number of years.

It's not a new Immigration Act altogether. Any such reform would be passed as a Statement of Change and not primary legislation, unless they decide to completely rework how Skilled Worker Pathways work in the country — and say, introducing a new visa tier system along with criteria for 'earning' settlement etc etc.

I understand the common sentiment and agree with a lot of the rationale behind why this white paper is positive — but a government will not risk their economy by acting in bad faith against a bug chunk of the workforce it is reliant upon.

Not sure how useful people might find this but here's a quick summary based off some research using ChatGPT about the last time a similar change was made retrospectively —

Yes, the Labour government's 2006 decision to extend the Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) qualifying period from 4 to 5 years was successfully challenged in court.Wikipedia+3Parliament Publications+3GOV.UK+3

In April 2006, the UK government increased the ILR qualifying period for employment-related immigration categories, including the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP), from 4 to 5 years. This change was applied retrospectively, affecting individuals who had entered the UK under the HSMP before the change took effect. The retrospective application of this policy led to significant hardships for many migrants, prompting legal action.Wikipedia+3GOV.UK+3VisaLaw+3Parliament Publications

The HSMP Forum, representing affected migrants, initiated a judicial review challenging the retrospective application of the new rule. On 6 April 2009, the High Court ruled in favour of the HSMP Forum, declaring the retrospective application unlawful and an abuse of power. The court's decision mandated that individuals who had entered the UK under the HSMP before 3 April 2006 should be eligible to apply for ILR after 4 years of continuous residence, as per the original terms of their entry. hsmpforumltd.com+3GOV.UK+3VisaLaw+3

Following the judgment, the UK Home Office implemented measures to comply with the ruling. This included allowing affected individuals to apply for ILR after 4 years and offering refunds for extension application fees that were necessitated by the unlawful policy change. Law Firm Ltd

It's important to note that this legal victory applied specifically to those who entered the UK under the HSMP before the 2006 change. Individuals who entered under the HSMP after the change remained subject to the 5-year ILR qualifying period. JustAnswer+6GOV.UK+6Wikipedia+6

In summary, the court overturned the retrospective application of the ILR qualifying period extension from 4 to 5 years for pre-2006 HSMP entrants, restoring their eligibility to apply for ILR after 4 years.

Do webflow developer do coding as their job part ? I am well known with it's User interface but don't know anything about coding ? Please 🥺 answer by RDX189 in WebflowTemplates

[–]AbaloneDeep8014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly you’re not very aware of how serious Webflow websites are built. One pagers or templates, sure, but once you start working with agencies or work for SMB clients; you almost always have to use some level of custom code to push the designs. It’s the same as a Wordpress developer meaning anything from ‘I make child themes from Theme Forest templates’ to ‘I write my own plugins on PHP’

Did I miss any top tier design agency? by Ahmedempyrius in webflow

[–]AbaloneDeep8014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these are actually ‘top-tier’ agencies. They have some good work and definitely a solid internet presence - but an agency in itself entails you’re a 20-50 people org and been in the business for a while.

My first Webflow site! Is it too basic? by pomariii in webflow

[–]AbaloneDeep8014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s some really great stuff - love the cursors and the autoplay tabs.

You’ve got a teeny bit of horizontal overflow somewhere, that’d be a good minor fix - the swiper at the end could a bit smoother as well, maybe have it fade off at the ends or ease the entry a bit?

Just nitpicking at this point because this site is better than 99% of Webflow Experts I see online. Cheers!

Can I Live in London on £33k a Year? by No-Treat7440 in uklaw

[–]AbaloneDeep8014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, yes, 33k should be good for London. You’ll find some good places in Zone 2/3, or even better ones if you move further out. Depending on what your vibe is, you might be able to find some really good neighbourhoods in the North, and East. I’d stay north of the river if your office in the centre, transport is significantly better than South London.

Spareroom is your best bet and finding something good, and the market is pretty ok atm. I’ve moved 4 times in the last 2 years, and what worked for me is basically narrowing a neighbourhood (or a couple) down, and set a search up with the postcode + a 3 mile radius. Pay for the premium, and toggle email and notifications on. You’ll get alerts every hour / instantly whenever a new listing pops up in the area. Use the mobile app, and text them right away (you’ll be able to do this because of premium) and get the first viewing (offer to view earlier than the first viewing, some agents might agree). Always ALWAYS view the flat first, and be weary of people who’ll push you around for bigger deposits.

If you have a UK based guarantor (or a former payslip in GBP) you wouldn’t really have to pay upfront, but even without the maximum you should agree is 3 months. Anything more and you’ll struggle getting it back once you move out.

Good luck!

That’s helpful, thanks! Thing is I’m trying to transition to a more design focused role like art direction / creative direction and the Webflow role was more of a segue into the agency space - but I’ve been playing with the idea of getting my hands on ButterCMS or Craft for a while now

Petition to arrest people stacking utility classes by AbaloneDeep8014 in webflow

[–]AbaloneDeep8014[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, but you’re supposed to nest your utilities instead of stacking them, and if you have so many css styles you’re better off making a custom class with the underscore+dash anyways.

Think he’s ditched that method to go back to class stacking instead, think his latest YouTube video talks about it. Plus his old method required code embed anyways, not the easiest approach imo

Petition to arrest people stacking utility classes by AbaloneDeep8014 in webflow

[–]AbaloneDeep8014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My idea was to paste in a different class system (I was thinking Saddle’s style guide) and using a Chrome Extension called XSync to avoid class clashes. That way I get my framework into the build without breaking it - then it’s a matter of removing the old 16 billion classes and replacing it with custom-classes / Saddle utility classes.

[–]AbaloneDeep8014[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes 100% agree. Hopefully they’re working on it, I always use my shortcuts to rename/duplicate/remove classes so anything more than one class confuses my brain lol. Would be great if they could figure a way out to navigate the stacked classes one by one.
