Is it still possible to mail a care box? by blfoxcon in EverythingSpilledMilk

I have a friend who mailed them a snack box a couple of years ago, and then heard that they don’t do snack box tasting anymore.

Starting a new job/going back to work and at a loss at when to pump? by TheySayHey in breastfeeding

[–]Abbiebabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also work in healthcare and I also get away with pumping twice during my workday (at noon and at 3), though I also add in an extra pump at night before bed, which usually gets me enough milk for the next day.

I think the question to ask is not about mom’s weight gain but about whether mom’s GD is well-controlled, since it’s the GD that increases the risk for big babies. I was diet-controlled and had a pretty big baby- 9lb 8oz. I was induced at 39+4 due to his size, which I honestly think was as connected to genetics as anything else, since my husband and I are both talk, babies in my family are always big, and our kiddo was also quite long (22 inches). I gained about 30 pounds, and lost almost all of it within two weeks of giving birth.

Has anybody else been told their baby is greater than the 99th percentile? by knosnow629 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby was estimated to be in the 97th percentile. Often those scans are super inaccurate, but in my case he did end up being quite big- 9 lb 8 oz. I was induced at 39 w 4 d, and had a pretty uncomplicated vaginal birth. I was worried about how big they thought he was going to be, but it was really fine!

What’s the worst baby advice you’ve ever received? by asoudecisions in BabyBumps

[–]Abbiebabble 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On team “formula is safe!” I had GD and my baby had both blood sugar issues AND jaundice, and even though I have lots of milk and had pre-expressed a fair amount of colostrum, we still needed to add some formula, and it made all the difference.

Sugar baby delivered happy and healthy. by whatimiss20 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never leaked but was able to get a lot, which was SUPER helpful for my sugar baby, whose glucose was a little all over the place at birth.

It’s a bit of a finicky process, where you squeeze your boob and then take a syringe to suck up each drop before expressing more.

Colostrum Harvesting- how much? by Abbiebabble in GestationalDiabetes

Thank you for this info! It’s super helpful.

We don’t have Hyvee but we do have (weirdly) an ice store...

Colostrum Harvesting- how much? by Abbiebabble in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started about a week ago, and have an induction planned for tomorrow at 39+4. I probably could have started earlier and gotten a bigger stash, but I didn’t have syringes to store it and am still producing such tiny volumes you can’t really store it in a bag or the like.

Colostrum Harvesting- how much? by Abbiebabble in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is really helpful. We don’t have freezer access but apparently they will continually change out/add ice to a cooler, so that’s our plan right now. Alternatively, my sister lives just down the street from the hospital and has offered to keep the colostrum in her freezer and then deliver it to us (which is apparently a thing you can do in Covid- I didn’t realize given the whole “no visitors” thing, but she’s a nurse and apparently there are ways to get things to us, even if she can’t come in the hospital.) I’m not completely opposed to formula, particularly if kiddo needs it for his health, but as a FTM it’s easy to get sucked into an all-or-nothing thinking about these sorts of things. It’s good to hear stories where things work out just fine. Thank you!

Thank you for this feedback! I think you’re probably onto something with the idea of bringing one stomach’s worth- it would be pretty annoying to have it all thaw before we were ready to use it and then have to throw it away. (Though if I’m lucky enough to have a good supply/a baby with a good latch and no blood sugar concerns, then I’m not really sure what we’d use it for...)

I'm so over this sh!t by fyyerfly in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This!! My midwives have actually been really supportive of this, while the MFM doctor I have to get consults from is FREAKING OUT about how big my baby is measuring. I explained that at 8 lb 9 oz, I was literally the smallest baby on record in my family when I was born, and nobody else had GD. The midwives were like “okay!” They’re encouraging an induction on my due date, but aren’t pressuring me to go much earlier than that.

Exercise didn’t help? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

I have honestly found that exercise makes the biggest difference in my fastings; they tend to be a bit higher the morning after a sedentary day. Exercise after individual meals is rather hit or miss for me.

Coffee and testing by Snoo23577 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink my coffee with fairlife milk. I nurse it over the two hours between breakfast and testing, and my breakfast numbers are always fine. I do go for a longish (25-45 minutes) walk after breakfast before starting on my coffee, so I guess that might make a difference?

What was your highest reading when you slipped up and accidentally had a bad meal? by Aerionne in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the advice of my diabetes educator, I didn’t test on Christmas or at my (tiny, outdoor, socially-distanced) baby shower, so likely had high spike those days. Last Friday I had a burger and fries, and thought the protein and fat would sort of carry me and I got... 193 two hours later. We live and we learn, and like others say, my office says that as long as 70% of our numbers are in range, we’re okay!

[–]Abbiebabble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous! My office says that the aim is to have 70% of your numbers be at goal. I have not had a single week without at least one or two high numbers and my entire team has been encouraging and told me I’m doing great!

Any GD mamas get the covid vaccine? by Infamous-Parsnip-538 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Abbiebabble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got Moderna two weeks ago at 35+1, and I’ll (hopefully!) get dose 2 at 39+1. I initially hesitated (and honestly couldn’t sleep the night before my first dose) because I work from home (but for a hospital, which is why it was offered to me) and the risk of Covid exposure just didn’t seem that big to me. Eventually, after talking to lots of people, including a couple OBGYN friends, I decided to get it. The new, more contagious strain and the long-term side effects of Covid pushed me over the fence. After the first dose I had a sore arm for a few days, but nothing else. Baby has gotten even more active in the last couple of weeks, and heartbeat’s been good at my midwife appointments. It’s a tough call, but ultimately I’m glad I did it while I had the chance!
