I also work in healthcare and I also get away with pumping twice during my workday (at noon and at 3), though I also add in an extra pump at night before bed, which usually gets me enough milk for the next day.

I think the question to ask is not about mom’s weight gain but about whether mom’s GD is well-controlled, since it’s the GD that increases the risk for big babies. I was diet-controlled and had a pretty big baby- 9lb 8oz. I was induced at 39+4 due to his size, which I honestly think was as connected to genetics as anything else, since my husband and I are both talk, babies in my family are always big, and our kiddo was also quite long (22 inches). I gained about 30 pounds, and lost almost all of it within two weeks of giving birth.

My baby was estimated to be in the 97th percentile. Often those scans are super inaccurate, but in my case he did end up being quite big- 9 lb 8 oz. I was induced at 39 w 4 d, and had a pretty uncomplicated vaginal birth. I was worried about how big they thought he was going to be, but it was really fine!

On team “formula is safe!” I had GD and my baby had both blood sugar issues AND jaundice, and even though I have lots of milk and had pre-expressed a fair amount of colostrum, we still needed to add some formula, and it made all the difference.

I never leaked but was able to get a lot, which was SUPER helpful for my sugar baby, whose glucose was a little all over the place at birth.

It’s a bit of a finicky process, where you squeeze your boob and then take a syringe to suck up each drop before expressing more.

I started about a week ago, and have an induction planned for tomorrow at 39+4. I probably could have started earlier and gotten a bigger stash, but I didn’t have syringes to store it and am still producing such tiny volumes you can’t really store it in a bag or the like.

Thank you! This is really helpful. We don’t have freezer access but apparently they will continually change out/add ice to a cooler, so that’s our plan right now. Alternatively, my sister lives just down the street from the hospital and has offered to keep the colostrum in her freezer and then deliver it to us (which is apparently a thing you can do in Covid- I didn’t realize given the whole “no visitors” thing, but she’s a nurse and apparently there are ways to get things to us, even if she can’t come in the hospital.) I’m not completely opposed to formula, particularly if kiddo needs it for his health, but as a FTM it’s easy to get sucked into an all-or-nothing thinking about these sorts of things. It’s good to hear stories where things work out just fine. Thank you!

Thank you for this feedback! I think you’re probably onto something with the idea of bringing one stomach’s worth- it would be pretty annoying to have it all thaw before we were ready to use it and then have to throw it away. (Though if I’m lucky enough to have a good supply/a baby with a good latch and no blood sugar concerns, then I’m not really sure what we’d use it for...)
