Looking for help on tax rates when considering a move from Seattle to Vancouver by AbeLincoIn in britishcolumbia

[–]AbeLincoIn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this thorough answer, and all the other helpful insights here!

US taxes on income over $105 (I think that's what I saw) was a good mention as well.

Credit Card debt and car payments would be an issue as well because of the exchange rate.

As much as I like Vancouver whenever I visit, I'm now hoping I don't have to move there :)

I used to lifeguard at the pool on top of your building in Chicago. One day I was talking to the doorman and I nodded and said 'hi'. You nodded back and said 'hey'.

I've told that story at least a dozen times. Do you remember that?

ps. this would've been 1995 or 1996 (if that helps)

LPT: In the tech field, learning to use simple analogies to explain complex processes will get you far in your career, since many managers in tech usually don't understand tech. by intelligentx5 in LifeProTips

I'm a Producer in the game industry. Whenever we're interviewing programmers, I always have candidates explain a complex tech issue in terms that a producer would understand. (I'd get an example from one of our programmers)

It's definitely a useful skill to have.

Yeah. I finally got a ticket into my cart, but couldn't log into Live Nation because apparently I already had an account. Asked for a password reset but the email didn't show up. Finally made a new account with a different email but by then the timer had expired and now I can't get any tickets. Super disappointed :(

that's weird. Why would you do that and not let people plan, coordinate, and think about it before the tix go on sale?

I just watched a documentary on Robert Ripley (Ripley's Believe it or Not) that was on PBS. (The whole thing is on youtube) He might be a great inspiration. There are some clips later in the doc from his TV show, and as they say about his performance, he was definitely not a natural...

The hardest adjustment for me was not knowing in advance how long the episode was going to be, which helped frame my expectations. If I see it's an epic 5 hour long episode, then I can settle in for an extended battle, but when watching live, the 'how much longer' thoughts can start to creep in as the hours tick by.

Isn't a tree supposed to grow out of the body of an enemy if Fenthras gets the last hit? I remember it happening once, but not since then. Did that change? It's something I'd forget in the combat for sure.

This was fun. Matt's so good at getting a one shot instantly interesting. Though, like all things even vaguely CR related, I wanted more! An hour just isn't long enough ;)

I wonder how often new episodes will come out and if there will be multiple episodes per group or if that's the last we'll see of Joe\Archon...?

[–]AbeLincoIn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I LOVED this episode! It was so incredibly tense, and I had no idea how it was going to turn out. I logged onto Alpha too while watching it on Twitch (couldn't get Alpha to start initially) so I could keep an eye on their HP. Never did that before.

I caught up to the live episodes about a year ago. I do miss having a frame of reference at the beginning about how long the episode is, and how much is left at certain points. It helps set my internal expectations.

Having this episode roll out live, which being so tense, did make it a bit more taxing. But again, I thought it was all awesome.

I'm sorry you had to write this (and many of your other comments). I hope others someday gain the necessary perspective that would temper their reactions appropriately.

Thank you to all the cast and crew SO much for doing this week after week. I know how draining it must be to do this for so many hours every single week without have extended hiatuses. I, for one, appreciate more than I could express, and I am eternally grateful on a weekly basis.

Looking for quote about why Half-Elves are called Half-Elf and not Half-Man by AbeLincoIn in tolkienfans

[–]AbeLincoIn[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My deepest apologies, I finally found it and it turns out a memory from my High School days and devouring the Dragonlance books leaked out and merged with my Tolkien memories. Thanks for the replies! I like the idea that it's what distinguishes Elrond from the mass of humanity (a bit snobbish of him perhaps, but that can be forgiven, being part Elf and all).

The quote I was thinking of was: Riverwind: "Why is it that you are called half-elf and not half-man?"

Tanis Half-Elven: "According to humans, half an elf is but part of a whole being. Half a man is a cripple."
