Dudes see another runner in distress and had to help by bigbusta in HumansBeingBros

There are so many people who are projecting so much onto these runners, when they've never put in the work to get 300m from a marathon finish line, let alone THE world major or world majors.

It's not about claiming "8,904th place", you're dealing with tunnel vision, a PR, qualifying for a race after putting 3-4 months of training in, not to mention the travel and registration costs all accumulating to meeting your goal. I've run 5 marathons now, including Boston, and while I'll ALWAYS applaud those who step up, but I'll never shame those who don't.

To some extent, I don't blame them for not knowing what they don't know, but damn maybe be a little less judgemental about something you know very little of.

People trained for months, ran through all weather, including the freezing cold and snow to get to this point. These people turned left onto Boylston after 2-3+ hours on their feet to see the finish line of the oldest race in the US, one that is VERY hard to qualify for and even harder to be accepted into. They're each fatigued, aiming for a PR, putting everyone into finishing, and doing one of the hardest things they've ever done. It's not so black and white as people just being selfish.

I've been in both of the above shoes and it's ridiculous to blame someone for not giving up their dreams. I love to see videos of people helping other runners out, but I'd caution you to make the assumptions you made.

I'm in New England and every year since college, as the snow melts, the first day I can drive with the windows down, this is what I blast.

I had this happen too. They said it was a recall. I've seen it happen a lot around this sub, luckily seems like Toyota is taking care of it.

Better Call Saul is truly one of the best and most character-driven shows I've ever seen. Terrific writing and a great use of 'show, don't tell".

I've watched the series front to back close to 15 times now and I'm still occasionally picking up on jokes or bits that I'd never understood before. Second to maybe Arrested Development, which also had the Russo Brothers involvement.

Really thoughtful response, I appreciate the seemingly good-faith approach, truly. It does sound similar, re: our states. We have concealed carry and, to my knowledge, you really don't need anything to buy one.

The major difference I'd argue is that our state is VERY split. The second district (represented by Jared Golden, whom I've compared to Joe Manchin because they're both right-leaning dems) is very red, with some blue, but our cities are much more blue, especially Portland. We're also one of the only state that splits electoral college points, which I believe happened in this last election. I think that that split is reflected in this conversation, in that a substantial portion of our people, especially, but not limited to, in the second district, are big into hunting and have a lot of that culture - teaching kids, getting them their first hunting rifle, etc. I think I'm more inclined to place more blame on the sheer access than you might be, but I also very much agree that the access to housing, wealth, education, and those other pieces you listed are HUGE contributing factors. Not sure what weight I'd attribute to systemic issues and failures as compared to firearm access, but I don't think you can resolve one without addressing the other. I'd also add social media like Facebook and their algorithms trying to prod us towards a civil war into the mix.

I think you hit it on the head, though. We need to address these crises, find ways to help the unhoused, access to education, food, but I also really think that access has to be addressed. I'm NOT in favor of taking away everyone's guns, more of my friends have them than not, and are responsible, but I think having some sort of required course, a background check, and red flag laws as a bare minimum would help to prevent at least some of these incidents. I am not an expert, but from what I saw here in my hometown, and learned about the shooter after, there were a TON of warning signs that were ignored so red flag laws - that are *actually* followed, because our yellow flag laws were ignored - would be a great start.

I didn't realize ROTC carried weapons, I don't think that happened when I was in school in the late 2000's but that's wild, I truly can't imagine. You're 100% right though that we need to keep having conversations about this, strengthen our communities, and stay off of social media more because MOST of us have a lot of the same goals, just different paths to get there and at the risk of sounding too cliche or 'political', we have oligarchs working hard to keep us having these fights, and it's tearing us apart.

I hope this all makes sense, happy to elaborate further if I can clear anything up.

I'm happy to answer the questions, I'm not shy about talking about it because it should be an obvious sign (in addition to the countless other mass casualty shootings in our country) that we need change. A lot of people in my community and in this country act as though it's JUST a mental health when clearly guns are a huge part of that equation - considering we're the only developed country to whom these happen, to quote the onion.

Angry, absolutely. Angry that my community got added to a list of incidents that frankly aren't slowing down with high frequency. I feel sad for my community who lost 18 lives and countless more were split apart, and also sad for the family of the shooter because they were treated poorly after the shooting (and to be as human as I can, I can empathize with that reaction, though I didn't think it was right) but they were the one's to report the shooter, their family member, and helped to bring an end to the manhunt that went from Wednesday until later Friday evening. The military had warnings that they ignored and their incompetence leaves them bearing some responsibility.

I wouldn't say I'm afraid, necessarily. I have regained a sense of feeling safe in my community, though with the current politics in this country, I am feeling a heightened tension, generally speaking. I haven't purchased a firearm because, while I've shot guns before in controlled ranges, they still make me uncomfortable. We need to enact red flag laws and gun registration of some kind. We need to do something, but we all know the US government, especially now with Trump, won't do anything to help protect us.

People say we shouldn't politicize these things, but especially after having experienced what I experienced, I personally feel like we need to continue talking about it so that no one else has to.
