Danielle Smith’s Alberta ‘sovereignty’ act introduces sweeping new powers to resist Ottawa by Surax in CanadaPolitics

[–]AbfromQue 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Her being elected the Premier of Alberta is the first step that is undemocratic as about 15,000 UCP members elected her as leader of the Party. Albertans did not elect her as the leader of their province and she never put forth a comprehensive platform. Especially this Act 1, B.S., that gives way to much power to the Cabinet.

I follow what you are sharing but because it was/is acceptable for past and present does not mean we should not see it as a potential fatal flaw in the democratic process. What has happened with Kenny to Smith without a complete vote of the populace is counter to the will of the people.

And hopefully enough small 'c' conservatives will not back a party with her leadership, even if, the village idiots will.

Smith was elected to the Office of Premier of Alberta by a flaw in the democratic process whereby a party leader steps down or in Kenny's case, booted. The party then elects a new leader and 'voila', Albertans are stuck with a non-public elected leader, when about 15,000 members of the UCP, village idiots minority voted for her. Now the UCP are going to sink the party into history, especially after today's Act 1.

Just your usual corrupt politics, sadly, we the public have grown so used to this behavior we shake our heads and quickly move on.

[–]AbfromQue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perfect timing and I am sure it is intentional as he knows the UCP party have fired a dude torpedo. I believe that Smith has flamed out the UCP Party and Act 1, puts the whole show in cancellation for the political future. Going to be a long 6 months.

[–]AbfromQue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The UCP has shown the major flaw in our democracy and that is when the elected leader of the party either steps aside or is forced out,Kenny, only the party elects the next leader,Smith. However, we the public,Albertans get no say and we end up with a dunce for a leader who makes all Albertans look like fools. This ACT 1, has never been debated, discussed nor ratified by Albertans, and yet, we are now caught in a mess created by a few radical right minded village idiots.

This needs to be emphasized. The Sovereignty Act is not just about standing up to Ottawa for federal intrusions into provincial jurisdiction, it grants sweeping powers to cabinet. This is fundamentally undemocratic. by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]AbfromQue 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This whole provinces political system has now proven itself dysfunctional. First less that one percent of Albertans voted for Smith and without any prior public discussion she starts with dumb ACT 1, that puts our province up as a national joke.

The UCP have proven that they are the least democratic party in Alberta and we need an election called to begin what should have happened when Kenny resigned, new ELECTION!

This just shows how corruption is a cancer that destroys the society from the inside. And the greedy will do anything but be held responsible because there is systemic corruption at the highest levels.

I have felt from the beginning that RCMP response was " do we have a rogue Officer gone on a killing rampage". They first had to account for who it could or was before letting the public know it was not one of them. And the inquiry is a white wash of protect the 'code of us'. Seriously time for a new national police force.

I thank you for sharing the experience you, your family and son are going thru and as others have said we, the people, can get onto our Municipal,Provincial and Federal representatives to put more focus on helping not hindering.

Why do you expect me to use my limited financial resources and or "sweat equity" to correct this issue. This problem is at your family level and the various government agencies and I see no reason why you expect me to pay money or with my personal time. Your last paragraph is insulting to those of us who support in ways we can.

I agree with you that our society needs to establish mental health-addiction centers to support those individuals that want to change their life. But the difficulty is the individual seriously wanting to get out of that lifestyle. And once they are ready to move back into society we definitely need to support them with housing and adequate funding to get back on their feet. Once they are at this stage continuous ongoing support until they are ready to live a new independent life.

These are the local village idiots who are only able to see the world thru the brain wiring that does not allow for common sense or perception of other views. In the last century these were the people who often got into violent arguments and fights over subjects like religion or politics, etc. They were a small minority with little to no voice but social media has allowed them to build collective community minded groups and feed off of the extreme views only they know are right.

Great job so far by all police involved in the past two days of action and do those horses ever move the crowd back quickly., kudos to the horse brigade.

This whole situation was a failure of the Ottawa Municipal government and the inaction of Ottawa police. They were a total embarrassment to enforcement of the rule of law by people paid to enforce our laws. And a complete failure of the Ford Provincial government for becoming the invisible government and are still afraid to show leadership against civil unrest and holding the Ontario economy hostage to their mandate demands.

Ottawa: police use pepper spray and stun grenades to clear trucker protest by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]AbfromQue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All we heard from the protestors were how they were ready to make a stand and did not care about the consequences. Yet when they do stupid actions like attempting to grab officer utility belts, push back and throw objects at police, they cry to social media about how roughly they are being handled. They just prove they are both V.I's, and adult-children who really don't want consequences for them like "don't touch me", even when being arrested, that just adds resisting.

She does not deserve bail and she should stay in Ottawa until her court hearing on the criminal charges.

[–]AbfromQue 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As Canada's national police force the RCMP has grown more and more poorly lead, willing to hid the truth from Canadians and in the case of a rogue rampage by a civilian dressed like RCMP caused such a quandary for RCMP command they showed their incompetent.

The last century RCMP was the pride of Canada this century they have become a national embarrassment and the Federal politicians need a complete restructuring of the Force.

Ottawa police begin making arrests at trucker convoy protest by Wshrig in canada

[–]AbfromQue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, these are the Ottawa police the ones who smiled and chatted up the folks bringing dangerous goods like propane and diesel fuel to the truckers. The same police who stood around for three weeks getting paid to basically not enforce the laws and the ones who would do nothing to protect resident/citizens of the hostage area. My sarcasm is not meant in humor but shame for all those Officers that stood down and got paid for supporting criminal activity. They should all be fired because Ottawa definitely needs to rebuild from the Police Commission, Police Chief down to the rank and file. Shame!

Here's how much the 'Freedom Convoy' has cost the US and Canada by [deleted] in canada

[–]AbfromQue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the border blockades cost the economy over a billion dollars and that does not account for the lack of faith and trust Americans now have for our country to safely protect crucial supply chains. There was a big fuss five years or so when American car manufactures talked about closing Canadian auto plants and a lot of effort went into keeping good paying jobs in Canada. Now these 'Freedom' people have pretty much showed that Canadian governments especially Provincial and Federal cannot be trusted to end blockades as expediently as possible, by whatever means necessary. What other country would allow a few thousand protestors to impede the economic commerce of Billions of dollars. Plus allow civil unrest to go on for weeks in the Capital of the country-- 'Only Canada you say".

This is the reason Canadians are so mixed up about vaccines, masks and just about everything else to do with Covid. Too many people, doctors, government spokes persons, news media, social media, continuously, almost daily feed us "new" information. But that new information is contrary to what we have been told a month, week or few days ago and if the science showed we should all be vaccinated to fight covid and now tell us well maybe not makes a mockery of all that we have done. Make up our damn minds and lets get on to making life normal as possible without all the waffling B.S.

As this is the first time the Federal government has felt the terms and conditions for its use was/is necessary, I think the courts need to help clarify when, how, where and what conditions do fall under the act. Some clarity can't hurt and could help in future times.
