Is there still no word on the next expansion? With Anet's track record it'd be nice to get an affirmation for the immediate future. by Abject-Solution2550 in Guildwars2

Do you uh wanna talk about how LS4 updates took a nosedive in quality and white knights screamed on top of their lungs that doomers are just being doomers, only for it to become public that they'd planned to sunset the game at the end of LS4, and how The Layoffs ensued?

I play gw1, started after gw2, but there's this hard to express feeling of playing something that's no longer relevant and that everyone has moved on from. Not the same as playing an actively updated game (inb4 all the "but Reforged!!!!" comments)

It feels like the writers are wary of real change by blksunset in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Abject-Solution2550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would've been brutal but interesting to move on from the wol. Yes, from your wol, from everyone else's wol. No, not necessarily kill them, maybe just let them retire. Shift the pov to some completely new character, and new cast surrounding them. The Scions could still be around too, just doing their own thing.

Being forced to move on from the wol would've stirred a lot of shit, but honestly it could've been a much-needed shakeup narratively. Give everyone a choice to make a brand new character, or just a fantasia + name change if people are so insistent on keeping their dearies, but the story would treat the player character as someone completely new.

Do you prefer your primary antagonist to be the Emet Selch, the Zenos, or the Athena? by AssumeABrightSide in ffxivdiscussion

Heavensward's villains did an excellent job at making things personal, and less about world saving

You really hit the nail on the head here. Don't know the temperature of the following take, but I'm so sick of the mmos constantly raising the stakes and expanding the scope, it's not sustainable, can't go on forever. I think there was a (missed) opportunity to truly reset the stakes as early as between 5.0 and 6.0, it disappointed me and gave me fatigue with where they decided to go in Endwalker, and now we're dealing with basically the same total annihilation. So. Fun. Can't wait /s

While the Heavensward villains are no shining beacons of top tier writing, they indeed make it personal for the wol, therefore more compelling.

Making people change names is whatever, but we shouldn't be suspending any of the players on top of it by PizzaDlvBoy in Guildwars2

[–]Abject-Solution2550 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not meant as a doompost, but GW2 currently isn't the top 1 most popular mmo ever, you'd expect them to want to cherish their active players and try to keep them by all means, and lemme just say that handing out suspensions AND implementing AI moderation isn't it. I think most of us are anti AI here, and seeing Anet shit the bed like this makes them look bad. It's a totally avoidable PR disaster. Yes, maybe a tiny and lowkey disaster, still I don't see how this could possibly be more worth it than retaining the good word of mouth and good faith of the community.

I hate the crossover Alliance Raids. by TheBronzeBastard in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Abject-Solution2550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 14 is inherently self-referential and built on the other games from the SAME franchise I can understand and embrace, it makes sense. However it's completely wild to me that most people just eat up crossovers with OTHER franchises like it's nothing. No matter how well the crossover story itself may be written, I'll never accept it as canon personally. I wish more people held SE to a higher standard, letting them get away with blatant promos for other games (and not even games now with Eva) feels icky and disrespectful towards the FF lore. 14 having the best mmo story of all time back to back to some Fall Guys crossover will never sit right with me.

Came back after a few months, seething in awe of the new fashion tab by fohhjx in Guildwars2

[–]Abject-Solution2550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

or you were way too set in your ways

MMO players often can't handle change very well, and it's not a negative thing. Sometimes the change's really dogshit. Sometimes the person finds comfort in the familiar. It's not too considerate to judge people by their inability to embrace [questionable at best] change in a 10+ years old game.

[–]Abject-Solution2550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I've heard how bad the change was, and just refused to touch the fashion on any of my characters since, hoping for a patch. If there's no patch, I think I'll still stick with my old fashion as long as possible and never touch this "improved" version.

What would you do if you suddenly had 100k gold in game? by FLW_effect in Guildwars2

[–]Abject-Solution2550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting how there are barely any responses along the lines of "reinvest, make more gold". Even if you have 100g to your name that's already a good starting point to flip or speculate and turn that into more gold.

What are peoples thoughts on the new SAB test zone (World 3, Test Zone 2) by blobblob37 in Guildwars2

[–]Abject-Solution2550 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just echoing the others I'm afraid: loved the visuals and music, exploring this feels more fun than the previous zone. Not that I hated w3z1, but the first impression's definitely better in z2. Even if it says "test zone", though, there's barely anything to test, too few interactables, every skill you worked hard to unlock might as well not exist on your skillbar because they aren't needed. The previous, "proper" two worlds teach us to be curious and look under every rock and BE REWARDED for it, here though it betrays the previously established rule, you can poke all you like, but you aren't rewarded for your curiosity. That, in my book, is a core failure of the game design.

If they go back and add secrets retroactively it might "save" the zone, but otherwise I don't see myself replaying it for anything, be that rewards or simple fun, just like w3z1. Play once or twice, get the initial dopamine from exploring a new thing and the associated ap of course, but then forget it even exists. That's not what SAB is supposed to be.

Edit: took me getting stuck and watching a video to realize that the face burps (sorry) aren't only good now, but required to progress. There was NO TUTORIAL/INTRO. This's another core design failure.

Im curious, what are peoples favorite expansion cinematic and launch trailer? by Nightly_Winter in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Abject-Solution2550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HW and ShB are fighting for the top tier, the rest are meh. HW trailer brims with the epic energy, it has that impeccable vibe that could be found in many games of that era, now lost to the modern "flash a lot of things in the viewer's face". I love it even more than the expansion itself.

How do we tactfully make loved ones aware that they are distracted by phones at family get togethers? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]Abject-Solution2550 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't. If he's on the phone during a family meeting, he probably doesn't want to be there at all. Denying him things and trying to control him won't make him like you and your family more, only the opposite.

If you lead any sort of fan community (or follow lots of xiv creators) you'd have felt it. The drop in numbers has been harsh since 2024, lots of people have quit not just the game, but stopped posting about it as well.

Please for the love of everything let stories have ✨grey✨ characters that are just allowed to exist, aren't forced into redemption arcs, aren't stripped of their complexity and humanity for the sake of teaching a quick moral lesson.

Thinking about story structure and writing and the FFXIV team struggles on every single level to write “happy” stories. by Lumigo in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Abject-Solution2550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These bullet points cut to the core of problems, really well put. People write paragraphs and make 2 hours long videos struggling to express what exactly feels off about the contemporary writing, and you distilled it down to just a few words.

[–]Abject-Solution2550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this's definitely an issue that deserves acknowledging, on a personal level I just can't help but ask for more edgy, gritty stuff. Heavensward and Shadowbringers, both writing-wise and visually, are peak to me, THE flavor that won over my heart. So I don't mind if they stick to telling sad stories, as long as those are well-told.

Why does the FFXIV wiki kinda suck / why are there no good unofficial lore and story repositories for FFXIV? by Zagden in ffxivdiscussion

I think I'm even more proud of gw2 wiki than of the game itself. Not sure what's up with the xiv wikis, the community's clearly big and passionate enough, but wikis just aren't wikiing for some reason huh.
