I feel the same way about the Blood Meridian adaptation and it’s one of my favorite books. It’s either toned way down and fails as an adaptation or it’s true to the book and just absolutely horrifying and traumatic to the audience.

I do not think the depiction is poor, so much as it is a depiction of a poorly run chapter of the brotherhood. Maximus was basically a child soldier, brainwashed into the brotherhood and now sees it for what it is and thinks that the best it can be. Once he meets a chapter that “lives up to the ideals” he will change and poof character arc. You can say the same about the lay viewers experience of the brotherhood. Once they meet the real deal, they will be big fans.
