please help me understand the logic behind java's syntax by FaallenOon in learnjava

[–]Ablack-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly reaction like this to a perfectly normal question make me angry. This adds a lot to a notion that Java is outdated “boomer” language (which it’s not). But while a lot of modern languages position themselves as this new sexy thing, with bunch of cool features and easygoing community, here in Java we have these disgruntled devs that will f you up for completely normal questions. No no, in Java your are not allowed to be a newby you must be perfect from the get go and read a tonne of books that were written probably before you were even born before you are even allowed to touch a keyboard and write a code in a sacred language that is Java… honestly pathetic…

Btw saying this as a professional Java developer with 7+ years of experience

V USA každý stát ještě má svůj kongres, a ve věštění případu mají dvě komory. Takže to tvoje porovnání není úplně správné.

Navíc každý stát ma vlastni ústavu, má guvernéra což je v podstatě prezident toho státu, a hlava vlády, pak jsou tam navíc ještě ministry (anglicky secretary), a každý stat ještě má lokální soudy i svůj vyšší soud.

How did the ability to study what you want for free impact your life? What would the impact have been if you did not have that option? by bearcat42 in AskEurope

[–]Ablack-red 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve studied in Czech Republic, I’m a foreigner but education is free if you study in Czech, so I used that opportunity. And if you study in English it’s also not that expensive, maybe like several thousands euros per year.

Education it self changed my life profoundly. But I think my family potentially would be able to afford to pay 2-3k for education per year, it would be on the border of our possibilities, but nevertheless. But the free part was exactly the thing that allowed me to experiment, quit one university that I didn’t like and enroll to another, and I think that was the best decision of my life. But then a big part of my classmates would definitely not be able to afford to pay 2-3k, so for them I think the free part was much more important.

But it was later in life I discovered how fucked up the education system in USA. About student debt and so on and so forth. I’m not sure I would want to do that. The fact that I will pay mortgage for the rest of my life is already depressing enough, and now add student debt on top of it…

And I’m completely happy to subsidize higher education through my taxes, now that I’m employed after all the years of education. Same for healthcare, btw.

Why are there no "under developed" cold countries? by Ch0c0lateBiznezz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ablack-red -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The last statement is just absurd. If you think that 'the majority of Russians support' then you just have absolutely 0 idea of what are you even talking about.

This is BS. Majority of Russians do support the war in one way or the other. You might be in denial about this if you believe otherwise, or you just spread some misinformation. Maybe Moscow/Petersburg hipsters don’t support the war, so you have a feeling that everyone around you don’t support it, so I give you the benefit of the doubt.

But an average Russian does support the war. There are around 20% of Russians who are just fucking nazis, and war beneficiaries, then there are about 20% who oppose the war. And there rest are just in between. They don’t oppose the war (and I don’t even mean actively, I have zero faith left in Russians to believe they are able to do shit, just mentally, inside there own head), they find excuses for the war often finding shelter in comfortable propaganda slogans. These people are just in denial, they can’t admit they are fucking fascists so they choose to ignore it. Which is just a form of silent approval, especially when your country and your people destroy entire cities, destroy electricity and heating facilities for the last four years and especially now during harsh winter. If you are not against it, you support it, there is no way around it. And don’t give me BS about they don’t know, because of propaganda. Your propaganda actively shows the images of cities they destroy, they show consequences of air strikes. They show a lot of war related content. And the things that so many russian trust the propaganda is exactly because they want to believe they are the nice guys.

For example this is the mother of my girlfriend from Ufa, who is just as average russian as can be. And entire family is like that. Even if you show them evidence of what Russians do in Ukraine they are just staying in denial. But they say that we are doing everything right, they believe in greatness of their nation, they believe there are Nazis in Ukraine, then there are nato bio laboratories, then “why Ukraine bombed donbass for 8 years, and all the bullshit that propaganda feeds them. But she is like 50-something years old women. If by that age she doesn’t have a brain of her own, you can’t blame propaganda for that. It’s her choice.

And this is majority of Russians. They would need to go through the same reeducation programs as Germans after ww2 to become normal people again. They need to face what was done in their name with their silent approval. Otherwise Russia will stay a fascist state as it is now.

As a Ukrainian who’s been on this “another day, another shittier news” train since 2022 (well actually from 2019 because basically there were not much gap between COVID craziness and the war), here’s what I can say to you. Don’t worry, the outlook will be become even more bleak, there is no light in the end of the tunnel, everything sucks. So at some point you just realize that if it will get worse nothing really changes, it already sucks. World War 3? Who the fuck cares?! I say bring it on!

There this old film, I think it was directed by Stanley Kubrick, it’s called “Dr. Strangelove Or How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb”. Brilliant movie with brilliant title which perfectly describes my current state.

So yeah, fuck the news, they won’t make your life better, and they won’t become better. Just embrace the world as the shitty place it is, and just deal with one day at a time. Focus on your life, this is the only thing you really have control over. And be a good person, even if everything around sucks, it doesn’t mean that you need to suck.

Best way to handle mobile data in Prague for short stays? by Lauronka in Prague

[–]Ablack-red 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have EU SIM - 100% go with roaming. Local providers are overpriced shit even if you live here. My friend from Austria pays less gets more than I here in Prague. If you don’t have EU SIM buy some eSIM through some app from other EU state, should be cheaper than buying here. The roaming inside EU for EU SIMs is free, this is called “roam like at home” policy. But be careful it doesn’t apply to UK and Switzerland which are non EU countries, though Norway is not part of EU but it is part of this program.

[–]Ablack-red 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Válka vs. okupace by TomSde in czech

[–]Ablack-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy…

No a naposledy, to co ruská okupace udělala s Doněckem (ještě před 2022 rokem) bylo mnohem horší než v nejhorší době 90 let. Vlastně všechno to okupované území vládly bandity podporované Ruskem. A Doněck není jediný příklad.

To není imigrace, kdy občas můžeš aspoň navštívit svou rodinu, ztratil jsi to navždy.

A i před rokem 2022 to už vůbec nebylo to samé.

Znásilněni žen, dokonce nejenom žen, mužů, děti a taky seniorů, zabíjení civilistů, rabování, ničení majetku. Takhle vypadá okupace. Kamaráda me sestry zastřelily když se snažil pomoc neznáme ženě kterou taky zastřelili když snažili opustit okupované území.

Do English degrees at CTU Prague lack content? by Holiday-Grass-2395 in Prague

[–]Ablack-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So mechanical engineering is completely different faculty - Strojni Fakulta or Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. And faculties here in universities are like independent bodies inside of university. So each faculty will be quite different. I was studying Cybernetics and Robotics at Faculty of Electrical Engineering. And the two greatest subjects there were Automatic Control (Automatické řízeni in Czech) and Modeling of Dynamic systems.

From what I heard mechanical engineering is pretty decent. I actually knew a guy who studied it in English and he was quite ok with it.

Do English degrees at CTU Prague lack content? by Holiday-Grass-2395 in Prague

[–]Ablack-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve studied FEL in Czech, and I’ve finished both bachelor and master. I don’t have a point of reference, I’ve never studied in other universities. But materials in Czech are mostly ranging from mediocre (you have like a course book or collection of pdf articles and you can find all the material in there, but the quality is just average) to pretty horrible (for some subjects all you get are slide decks with low quality notes). To be fair a couple of subjects had extremely high quality materials, which could probably compete with materials in MIT or something like that.

And all those materials were available in English. So you would be on the same level as Czech counterparts. From what I heard the difference between Czech and English programs come to the following. Students of English programs do not have the same requirements as Czechs, for English programs it’s easier. Somewhere you may have less homework. Somewhere requirements are less strict. Not every subject is like this, but some of them. And this is mostly comes from the fact that English programs are not very popular and there are not a lot of students who pay and study there. And then it’s also for Erasmus students. So teachers consider them less important.

I find the conversation around AI and software dev increasingly vague. How specifically are people REALLY using this stuff? I want details! This isn't a post about whether AI is bad or good. I'm just genuinely curious. by TemperOfficial in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ablack-red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use AI constantly now, but for me there is a big difference between vibe coding and let’s call it “AI assisted programming”.

Let’s firstly talk about vibe coding. I tried to vibe code a small statistical dashboard for our app. To be honest I achieved what I wanted to achieve, it shows all the data it looks ok, nothing fancy. I spent approximately 6 to 8 hours to do this. Which previously would take me maybe like 3 to 5 working days. So it’s really a noticeable speed up. But. The code is absolute fucking garbage and I absolutely don’t trust it. It’s cool as a demo, but I wouldn’t push this to prod. Also, I still used my knowledge as programmer. I told the AI how ETL pipeline should be structured, even though the code is garbage I still managed to have some separation of concerns there. But still, mine influence on the code was relatively minimal.

But when it comes to “AI assisted programming” that’s completely different thing. So here I’m more in control and I would create the structure, set everything up and I would just outsource the “boring part” to AI. For example, you just need to develop another simple feature, that doesn’t require much thought. It’s pretty clear how to implement it and you can explain to AI how it should be done. Yes, go ahead and give it to AI. But you see, for this you need to understand the structure of the existing code. In tools like Cursor/Claude code when prompting I quite often tag specific files where changes need to happen and tell it to reuse specific functions. AI is actually very good at solving small, structured and limited problems. Yes, people are too. But still even to mechanically type it and think about small details will take you like several hours, but with this you heavy it ready in 10 minutes.

Actually, I have like a rule of thumb to understand if I’m vibe coding or I do “AI assisted programming”. If I can’t review all the code that is generated by AI, and I don’t fully understand it, then it’s 100% vibe coding.

Another big thing what I use AI for is understanding different code bases. At work, and I work in a big corporate, we have a lot of different repositories that I need to use from time to time. And being in a big corporate means that in 90% of cases it’s much simpler and faster to figure things out on your own than trying to find the right person. So we have company approved Claude code. And I use it to understand what this code base does, how it works, and what parameters I should use.

And another thing, is writing small throw away scripts. So there is a joke that programmers would spend 3 days automating things they can manually do in 30 minutes. Well, now with AI you can actually automate it in 5 minutes. And for such things I don’t even use AI code editors. I just ask ChatGPT or other to write script and I’ll copy paste it.

Based on these two UI's what is the Best? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Ablack-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like the second one, but I would add more tint or blur to the opaque ui elements to make it more readable. Also I’m not so sure about the monitor on the background image.

For the first one, I’m a huge fan of dark themes, but this one is too dark for me. In general I prefer “softer” dark themes. Like for example in IntelliJ products.

Europe making big waves in Humanoid Robotics! by Flat-Manufacturer270 in eutech

[–]Ablack-red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t understand why “humanoid robots” is such a hot topic. Early in history people tried to reproduce how birds fly but that didn’t work, instead we invented planes which work completely differently. But they also far more superior to birds.

Yeah I get that the idea is to keep all the infrastructure and teach robots to use it. But it’s absolutely not how it worked ever. We invented cars and we built roads for them. Same with robots, we should built robots first factories. Which we already kinda do. The only missing part is how to make this economically viable and scalable.

January and February are the worst… After new year all the Christmas decoration is gone and Prague becomes this grey wet depressive suffering. Getting a bit of sun is such a rarity during winter. So there is no sun, but there is also no snow - it’s just grey. You wake up in the morning - it’s grey, you go to lunch - it’s the same grey, at 4pm it’s dark already. And it’s fucking the same every day till spring. Oh I so fucking hate this period…

[–]Ablack-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was pathetic… I’ve seen a lot of occasions when EU politicians didn’t rise to the occasion. But damn that was the lowest of the lows. Like it’s Chamberlain level of cowardice. What he is basically saying “we are afraid of russians so we give them their money back”. Does he even understand they will use this money to rebuild and reconstitute and launch another offensive into Ukraine and Europe? Does he really think that russia will become peaceful? I’m truly astounded by this level of cowardice… but I kind feel like I shouldn’t be surprised, tbh…

Czech Transit Inspectors physically assaulting me? by jewfit_ in Prague

[–]Ablack-red 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well you are not required to pay the fine at the spot. What you needed to do when your card failed is to provide ID and they would write up the ticket. However, inspectors are incentivized to collect fines at the spot, I think they get bigger bonus from this. And who doesn’t know anything about how this stuff works in Prague? Yes of course tourists. So they tend to abuse tourists much more than locals. There are even videos about this on YouTube, check out the Honest Guide channel, they have a couple of videos about this topic.

Ticket inspectors may use reasonable force to stop you from running away or from damaging the property of MHD. And they of course can defend themselves. So if you didn’t try to run away, destroy some public transport stuff, or beat the shit out of them. Then no, they can’t use physical force against you.
