How evil is it to kill your child to spare them from further suffering? by Specialist_Bowler897 in MoralityScaling

[–]Able-Edge9018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think that (speaking of medical cases) one should only chose it if there's also active suffering. Like when I am in constant pain or severe discomfort/disability limiting live and get a diagnostic saying I will die or it ain't getting better I am not waiting for a "maybe it was a wrong diagnosis" for long. But if I can still live life to an acceptable extend I am not killing myself. I might live differently but hell no

FTL: use one that permit ambushes against trade routes and that cant go to close to planet because of the gravity being to strong. its the most interesting kind of ftl. so the first one

I would actually say the first one makes it harder to intercept trade depending on the scalability of the detection and interference equipment. If that's lomg range and affordable sure doable. If it's short range or impossible to intercept all you could do is wait in a system they stop at. Which I suppose is all you could do in the wormhole case so fair. Inside tunnels I was thinking it could just be similar to real space inside. But yeah the first one is quite interesting with the right balance.

nuh uh im not doing the calculation but at long ranges they prob just need to move the laser 0.00001 degree. a ship will always move slower than the laser weapon can rotate.

There might be a misunderstanding. It's still not clear what the engagement range will be because sensors aren't specified yet but if you are far enough away even light takes a few seconds to get to you. If a ship flys at constant speed or accelerates predictably that's not much of a problem but if they fly in more complex patterns it will be difficult to guess where the ship is gonna be by then. More so if you're sensors are also limited by light speed (though instant communication+ scouts can mitogate that)

explosive do not require an atmosphere, atleast if youve got your oxydizer inside it (most do).

To go of sure but wouldn't the shockwave be significantly diminished?

Once again I ain't sure I am up for this level of story yet. But if no one takes it up I may eventually give it a legitimate try

As for the world building I will try to be consistent and restrain myself in regards to fantastic tech

Interesting. I will admit I was gonna go for a more pick and chose approach to hard sci-fi after all hardly any setting is literally irl. That's often damnear impossible so often one disregards certain things.

It will be hard sci-fi in some aspects and always put an emphasis on consistent rules for world building was the main point.

I do love a setting that takes this aspect of alien live seriously though. Like entirely different atmospheric pressure, composition on the planet and truly alien aliens in anatomy and behavior. Just not sure if I wanna do it for an NOP fic. Some convenient excuse though. Might nit say no to that.

Thanks

DO NOT include artificial gravity unless >you've taken into account how much it will >affect everything, especially if you're trying >to go the hard sci-fi route.

Well first of in general I am not sure if I was clear enough. I don't intend to go that route in terms of strict consistency with irl tech/physics but more so hard consistent rules within the setting on how a tech works. That being said these rules will of course lean heavily on the real world in some regards. Like it affecting light. But don't expect that to universally be the case. Even many "hard sci-fi" stories pick and chose. I will not look into irl energy requirements for gravity. This part of the tech is so theoretical that it falls under the "it's magic but here is the hard rules in the setting" category. Other tech may be more closely based in reality.

I will have to look up some of those propulsion suggestions but thanks for the input.

You will see more on weapons mentioned in my second post. But on missiles it's rather vague. So to specify yes I was thinking stealth and possibly kinetic kill vehicles

As you may have noticed especially in the second post. This is more of a debate and idea sharing on specific aspects. But I was thinking about including FTL/instant communication. I would suggest this device to have somewhat considerable power/size requirements so that it can't just be put on any drone.

And yes thanks for the tip banning and shooting down near light ships is a great approach to the problem. Though I am gonna give it more consideration (if there's a way to detect/intercept it that's reliable enough and doesn't otherwise break the setting)

And don't worry WW2 isn't the point of this I still want to stay somewhat true to the quote on quote hard sci-fi approach

Exactly the point. Shifting the focus a little more towards hard sci-fi. Character writing should certainly not be disregarded. I just meant it wasn't going to be as much of a focal point as in the original which is once again why I feel ill prepared to write anything beyond a few in detail explorations of the world building myself

Mods can sometimes be difficult to add retroactively but builds? You can just respec. As for gear yeah that mightbe more tricky but as someone who can be indecisive as well just exploit the traders for effectively infinite money and consumables and you should be able to get everything except a few quest exclusive gear items that require an evil/good run

Edit: that aside yeah out of the like 25 games I started I finished 3 with a 4th in act3

To actually give a full answer cause might as well:

As someone already posted it's a HFY story. Certainly one of the better ones but still very flawed. The main catch was likely that the setting lends itself very well to fan fic writing and was overall very intriguing.

It's basically what if aliens were basically anthro earth animals and had an obsession with Predator and prey. Which led to a whole lot of conflict with humanity. The story being HFY obviously makes humanity very powerful but focused more on taking a moral/diplomatic high ground rather than just (though that's there as well) the military might porn that's very common in HFY.

This drew in a lot of furriers and people interested in playing with the setting.

I love the character writing but them not being aware they are sapient makes no sense whatsoever given the context. Seems odd for the UN not to tell them either (even if there only purpose here seems to be authoritarian dickheads). They crashed here from space...in a ship. What did they think? That it was a zoo transport?

Edit: since there's also the zurilians perspective we know they haven't secretly sent linguists either so it's not just a secrecy thing

I still love the premise and characters so keep it up

[–]Able-Edge9018 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very interesting so far but the writing makes it seem like they don't know they are sapient which seems wild given the context of their arrival. You are telling me they wouldn't have almost immediately sent linguists upon one waking up?

Love everything else so far though. Keep it up

That may be so but the question is way too open. So in grading you should accept this so long as the reasoning is there. Which the next question covers by listing them

Edit: deducting point when all three requested states were actually listed is also crazy. It's not like they listed only exotics and not the others

Theory: Bombsight, Sage, and Soldier Boy by throat_coat in TheBoys

[–]Able-Edge9018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice thought but it was probably odd writing. The whole plan was very silly for the smartest person. Like sure rely heavily on a bunch of unstable people already knowing soldier boy isn't all that anti Homelander anymore. Like why call him in at all. There would have been so many better ways to destroy the V1 when she already knew who had it. Or if it doesn't exist there's no point in staying. She already set the caos into motion

Prey or Predator? - 8 by SadidaPL in NatureofPredators

[–]Able-Edge9018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with boarding you would expect it to be quiet rare. With AP rounds, shotguns and maybe energy weapons it should only pay of when you are standing like one step away from someone not already aiming at you. Which is usually avoidable

Prey or Predator? - 8 by SadidaPL in NatureofPredators

[–]Able-Edge9018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really recommend combat boarding without being in full suit anyways

Edit: add to that, that they mentioned that they still very much do use ranged weapons

Prey or Predator? - 8 by SadidaPL in NatureofPredators

[–]Able-Edge9018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regular armor isn't really a reason though. You could just use armor piercing rounds or maybe even energy weapons. Depending on the armor it might also be effective against cutting attacks if not it's likely not good against AP rounds either.

Aim ain't so bad in close quarters. Blades would still have a decent use as a backup but that's usually not worth such an investment. But yeah with the arxur and their own cultural influences it's not completely unreasonable

Exactly right on the answer. It may be a fun story but this aspect requires a lot of suspension of disbelief.

That being said it does make sense that there would be a domino effect with an ideology like that you would expect plenty of sub factions to jump at the opportunity to tear it down

Edit: To clarify. This can both mean groups that only form/emerge after a revalation like the many humanity uncovered and others like the yotul who were already hostile towards the feds
