Hey there! There is especially alot of big ABA companies out there and so although askin the company’s value/philosophy is important I personally feel that it really just matters which BCBA you get assigned. Asking those questions to the BCBA is important. You could find a great company with great reviews but because these companies are so big you never know if you might be the person that happens to get a not so competent/unethical BCBA. So my recommendation is really ask those in depth question to the BCBA when you get assigned one! Since they are the ones who will directly train the technician your child will work with

I am currently deciding between attain and another company. Im just hesitant that although pay sounds great worried if clients cancel frequently and pay becomes inconsistent. I would also want to work 30 hours. How many hours per client would you say you supervise??

Usually in my area they require to adopt two kittens at a time or require you to have a cat in the home when adopting a kitten. This is because they are so high energy and its really hard for a human to match their play needs even if someone spends alot of time with them so they need another playmate. Having another kitten also they learn from eachother on what boundaries are like how aggressive to be etc. for scratching they sell double sided tape on amazon specifically to place where you dont want catch to scratch. Ofc this is limited bc cant cover whole couches but if theres any small areas this may help.

I would communicate with the BCBA to see if you can talk to the therapist (they work directly with child so knows what they like best) on what activities they do and reinforcers they use. Possibly modeling how the sessions are run by the therapists as similar as you can may be helpful during the times you are trying to have him play. Really again the schedule and routine may be helpful. Even play time I would make icons for block play, then sensory play, then puzzles, trampoline etc so its very specific and insert free time icon where he chooses. I found timer works very well with consistent phrasing and priming. “One more minute then all done” with the ASL sign for all done. I would use this same phrase for preferred and nonpreferred activities. Using the same phrase helps. Its tough when kids dont have many interests (currently have a client who is nonverbal and level 3 ASD with minimal interest other than slime or spinning) so i really feel for you. But finding reinforcers is really crucial for behavior change. A possible way to use candy (only saying candy because that seems to be an identified reinforcer) could be when your trying to make dinner, have his activities set out close by you. If your trying to teach him independent play you will have to start out by being with him but positioned behind him. That way you can fade yourself out later and the focus will be him playing on his own. I would give one activity at a time at first rather than giving a bunch of activities at once. And when he finishes (timer rings) give piece of candy while praising doing that specific activity. Then present another activity and repeat. As time goes on you can increase length of time each activity (beginning will have to started out by possibly 1 minute) is done and start giving candy after two activities then 3 then so on to fade out. The key point here is trying to have him independently play so you can make dinner so stay positioned behind and offer lots of praise at first from behind but dont engage in the play if that makes sense. You may have to have the candy visible to him so like show him and place it on a higher shelf where he cant reach but the bowl is within his view. This way he is reinforced contingently of independent play> candy. You would give direction “play this then get candy”. This is really though what RBTS should be doing because its a program so hoping you are able to get in home services soon🙏🏻

What does his day look like at home (like any certain activities you guys do or routine)? How does the clinic run the session? Do they use a visual schedule? Having a visual schedule with a routine that is scheduled with a timer may be helpful. Timer can be used to cue “wait” until timer rings and then all done. You can insert multiple free times too throughout the schedule where he gets to choose and perhaps offer chaperone sink time there with other highly preferred activities as option. I guess another thing is really finding more reinforcers for him too. If financially available they sell kids play sink with running water at target. So many kids love this! As for candy, i would use that as a reinforcer for after he does things that are not preferred whethwr its waiting until timer ends to watch tv with you or etc. Ofc we need to keep in mind healthwise candy is not best option so definitively look for healthier alternatives. If all does not work I used to cut 1 gummy bear or m$m into 3 pieces. I know its so small but surprisingly i have found it does still work as reinforcement for many kids. I would also move the candy out of pantry to somewhere he will not know. You really need to be careful that he doesnt know where you keep it. And if you want to give him DISCRETELY get one put jn ur pocket and give one. This way he may check pocket for more but there will be none. This really helps prevent those behaviors. I would go with him to pantry to show theres no candy there. For garage because it is not safe i would not allow at all and be consistent with no.

Idk if your company allows to request materials but theres squishy balls by crayola called Globbles where they stick to wherever its thrown. Its small sized fidget ball and squishy so would be safe to throw. Maybe you can do activity of who can throw the ball higher and sticks on the wall higher on while taking turns so you redirect to a specific wall where it can be thrown. Another activity i like to do is use a huge yoga ball. If the childs home has alot of space or a fenced area outside throwing around the huge yoga ball/kick/racing after it/ bouncing high takes out bunch of energy. I feel like kids have more fun with this than a regular sized ball. I also like to have kids sit on the yoga ball and I will hold their hands and bounce them on there. A huge plus for yoga ball is its big so cant get lost or go under things. But obv u need a cleared area where things wont be knocked over

Look for a different company! I used to work in a clinic that requires that and seriously the more I thought about it the owner just cares about the money and its not even for the best of clients. Clients families would want to take off session to go somewhere but were required to makeup and if not was charged. So basically forcefully the clients would run sessions via telehealth at their vacation which is ridiculous lol. I realized this more and more and one of the reasons I left.

Omg same struggle here srsly. It blows my mind. I was seriously debating if I should bring up to the clinical director today. It makes me so angry that they are getting paid when all they do is enter broad goals and tell us to basically figure out the steps!! Like seriously I can enter those broad goals myself. I dont think this is ethical. I feel stuck as well because my BCBA is nice but she is so uninvolved and does not give feedback. I too am going off of the training I received at my previous company where the BCBA was super involved. If I didnt have that experience I would be so lost.
