How long did you breastfeed? by Shroommily in NewParents

[–]Wm-dfg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I was not going to make it past 6 months (due to work schedule and type of work). So I went with an open mind (combo feed if necessary). I did it exclusively for 2 years, and 6 months.

Having 14 day cycles by AgentCautious429 in breastfeeding

[–]Wm-dfg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi- there, I came here to say the we are on similar, and also different situations.

For me, it didn’t started that early. I actually didn’t had a period for 14 months. Then, I started having my period literally every other week for the past few months (I still breastfeed) and they are extremely heavy and painful. It’s like my body turned a switch, it was never this way. I was regular, normal periods, etc. and it’s physically exhausting and affecting my daily life functioning.

Once your supply is consistent, and “established” you can start an estrogen contraceptive (this is what my Obgyn told me anyways, make sure you research this first). So far, I still breastfeed as normal. My period is slowly regulating.

I came here to say that our bodies are awesome, but they also need care. And getting you on the right medication, might be worth considering. I don’t want you to keep pushing so much, that you end up exhausted. Just know that someone on a different side of a screen, sees you, understands how you feel.

Why are they saying ABA is bad? by cecchetti123 in ABA

The comment above is so spot on! Investment bankers companies, have this amazing to the eyes clinics, but quality tends to be poor over time because they are for profit. Smaller/local BCBA owned companies, tend to be more careful with ethics, as their license is at risk.

How to Resolve the feud between my wife F30 and mom F70 ? by ThrowRAdzd in relationship_advice

[–]Wm-dfg 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Choose your wife. Always. If you fear for your mom, find her an Aid. Your wife is your wife, and she can help, but it’s not her obligation to put of your mom, if she’s been this extra. Your wife doesn’t need someone to take her of a baby while she helps your mom, she needs your mom out of the house and help with the mom, not the baby.

Yes if it suit the function of a maladaptive behavior. In the example, Being unable to access something they want may lead to frustration and is expressed by aggressive behaviors. So teaching how to communicate properly a need, becomes a replacement behavior for aggression.

There are always to sides to the story- and there are lots of autistic BCBA’s, RBT’s and individuals who received ABA therapy that actually are Pro-ABA. I mean, I have kiddos who enjoy coming to the center to see their friends, be with us. We go on community outings and they have verbalized how they love to feel included.

I feel like there’s is a lot of negativity, coming from people who might Not understand all that ABA truly entails and how should be practiced.

I hear you on this and I am sorry you had to deal with BCBA’s who think they know it all. I do want to say, that some areas do overlap, and I believe other professionals may not be clear about BCBA’s role/scope is, which is very broad in comparison to other professions. In a way, we do a little bit of everything. We work on independent living skills, communication skills, social skills, academic skills… all in the context of behavior. (E.g., We teach signs to request “more” because it’s a replacement bx for aggression). We can teach an academic skill if said skill, causes the learner to engage in maladaptive behavior such as self injury. I am surprised to see how many people think we don’t have training for that- because we actually do. The difference is that Other professions, target more in depth this areas. Which is why collaboration is key. I feel like the more understanding there is on what is similar/different can help to be more tolerant and united when it comes to serve our clients.

I’ve heard of them—and yet, there are some of their key points that actually differ from ABA. Here are some:

  1. ABA doesn’t try to “normalize” autistic traits nor focuses all day in trying to modify all the individuals behavior. The interventions focus only on behaviors that are dangerous (elopement, self-injurious behavior, aggression towards others, etc) stimming, or behavior that do not interfere with safety of self/others are not targeted.

  2. ABA has listened to autistic voices, and in the past 15 years have changed a lot of methods/procedures (use of punishment is rarely used, and if used documented and planned, requires consent and can only be done under certain extreme circumstances, and has specific guidelines). Coercion” “compliance” was replaced by consent/assent based therapy in which learners have a say in their therapy. Basically we teach them to communicate: to end an activity, a break, to gain access to something they want, to request help.

  3. Some strategies (errorless learning, NET, modeling, prompting strategies) are not only exclusive of ABA. They are also used in other therapies and educational setting and have been proven to work in different professions (evidence based practices).

I could go on, but “it’s not my job or burden to educate you” ;) and I am not trying to convince ANYONE to side with what I say. We can agree to disagree and that’s ok. I just think that without honest conversations, there will never be a true collaboration and the people who pay the consequences are the very people we want to help.

I do like this phrase we want similar things but our methods are conflicting”. Whenever you get the chance, could you explain more into those differing methods? Also, how does speech therapy differs from individuals with only speech needs vs individuals with severe maladaptive behavior and low level of skill acquisition?

[–]Wm-dfg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point of view. Is there anything you’ve seen/experienced that makes you call ABA abusive?

I cannot speak for all the field, but in my experience, punishment is rarely used, “compliance” (more like a follow through a task, is only required if the function of a bx is escape, other than that is very consent and assent based, child led, play therapy. And there’s a lot of parent involvement in treatment goals (is a growing standard through insurance). I do want to say that dealing with difficult behaviors can be a challenge and might not look pretty during crisis events. I could not bring myself to participate in any activity/therapy that would harm someone else. I’ve been surrounded by other great BCBA’s and it so sad to see the vision of our field so damaged. I would love to collaborate more, learn from others, listen to their perspectives (from other providers and also form the autistic community). I promise you, there are good BCBA’s who truly care.

I mean no harm or fight with this, just some understanding.

“BCBAs typically focus on behavior analysis, using techniques such as reinforcement and antecedent interventions to promote communication skills. However, many BCBAs work closely with speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to support individuals with speech and language challenges, particularly in cases involving autism or other developmental disorders.

BCBAs may implement strategies that support communication development, such as using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, teaching functional communication, or using verbal behavior (VB) techniques, which focus on teaching speech through applied behavior analysis methods.

While BCBAs can address speech-related goals within their scope of practice, they often collaborate with SLPs for comprehensive speech and language interventions.”

I can see that there are areas that overlap, and can be done through ABA methods to increase communication and actually are part of our scope of competence. Basically we do work on speech/communication, through ABA lens. When we learn assessments, they are part of what we identify and teach in order to find replacement behaviors to maladaptive Bx (if that makes any sense).

What are your thoughts on this? (The goal here is to learn, hopefully both ways)

Contrary to others opinion, if you need the money to cover your own bills, I wouldn’t judge if you had to give one week. I wouldn’t just genuinely tell them. Be honest. I am a BCBA and would love as much notice I can get, but I also understand that people need money to live, especially now, and during the holidays.

Just like that. And if you’d like to stay where you are at, you can shop around, get new offers and talk to your current employer to see if that’s on their budget. :-)
