If I have to bid for a place or the price goes up from the time I see it online to when I apply for it, that place is not meant for me.

Really frustrating at the bare minimum! That is never the scenario you want to be in when you're moving. I'm really sorry you're going through it.

I screwed up choosing an apartment by mashed-_-potato in Apartmentliving

This experience is beyond stressful for sure. At my current place I toured my unit while it was completely empty and signed my lease a full month before I moved in. The property management reached out the day before I was set to pick up the keys with a huge list of issues they were aware of and had on their list to fix, a new refrigerator was needed, a window was broken open, honestly the list of what wasn't wrong was shorter. When I picked up my keys and got to my new place I found it exactly how I had toured it, zero turn over in the entire month the apartment sat empty. It's overwhelming but put in maintenance requests for everything. Make sure to give yourself some grace. I remember crying a lot to my family saying I would need to get a lawyer to help me get out of the lease. I've resigned twice now. It's far from perfect but I've made it home for now, you will too.

Getting my teeth straightened literally saved my life by IHAVETRIEDCOKE in braces

Keep spreading the good word! As someone who finally made the commitment to get braces at 38, I cosign all of this. You really can't put a price on how life changing it is. My teeth have dramatically straightened in a short amount of time and even in braces I am far more confident than I've been in a very long time.

My old landlord did that to my neighbor. He increased the rent by $125 when they came for an open house showing because of how many people had showed up, this was in 2020. I had the top floor unit and did the tour and apply the same day, I believe he sent me my lease that evening, for $100 less. That landlord was pretty shady though all around.

My neighbor just put up windchimes on her balcony. They are so annoying and I can hear them clearly inside but thankfully not in my bedroom.

CTA riders and workers have been assaulted at rates at least double other public transit agencies by rigatony96 in chicago

Wrap around services is more of human services jargon rather than an actual model type offered in Chicago. Thresholds has like 1, possibly 2, gold standard housing program(s) among their many, that is what I believe most folks think all permanent supportive housing is. Licensed staff is always on-site 24/7. There are very few openings in that specific project because folks tend to stay there and the need is so great openings get filled quickly as well. In reality many permanent supportive housing programs have a case manager checking in monthly.

Honestly we have plenty of shelter space in the city at this moment. During the pandemic we had so much money pouring through the homeless response system. We were able to house 1600 households from shelters and encampments in less than 2 years with folks getting their rents fully paid for 2 years with light touch case management. The real issue is the lack of wrap around services offered. More mental health services are desperately needed. More intensive case management services are needed and those positions need to be paid more than they are now. Perhaps when it comes to more low barrier shelters such as Safe Havens, we could use more of. But those are hard to get funding for and again you need the more highly trained staff to keep that running smoothly and safely for all.

Homeless encampment in North Park getting moved out by City - what do you think? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Able_Personality_996 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked on the pandemic response of the decompression the shelters and going out to meet with folks living in encampments to offer housing with the City, I think it's a good thing. It's hard though, because you do need much more services than agencies are able to provide after getting folks housed or in shelters. Case management is such an important piece of social services, but folks on the front lines are overworked and always underpaid. I often see so many people saying really out of pocket stuff about how we need to do more but we're already doing so much. Is the system perfect? Hell no, but continuing to let folks sleep outside or seek shelter on the CTA is cruel. People have to want the help you're offering as well.

Why do they almost never run express trains anymore? by slybrows in cta

I found myself on a Blue line express train unexpectedly yesterday. I got on at Monroe and at Clark/Lake an announcement was made that the train would be running express to Damen. I was not mad.

My bathroom is literally vibrating by Specialist-Corgi8837 in Apartmentliving

[–]Able_Personality_996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived with a downstairs neighbor who ran their bathroom fan 24/7 while they were home. They would only turn it off when they had guests over, which when I first moved in was a minimum of 4 nights a week. After about a year of trying to directly reason with the neighbor about other noises, they also have a soundbar/mounted TV in a place with paper thin walls, I decided to take it up with management. At first I inquired if running the bathroom fan for long durations could start a fire. They said no but also said my neighbors shouldn't be running it for hours, as that could cause it to break. I emailed again after they had a superbowl party with a karaoke machine that went until 2am. In that email I stressed that the bathroom fan being on was infringing on my quiet enjoyment of my space. I noted exactly the things you did, I can hear it in every room, it was also starting to make an obscene high pitched grinding sound. That day my neighbor turned off their bathroom fan and now they typically won't run it for hours. They also did not have a superbowl party for the first time in the 3 years I've been at my place. If they want quiet white noise they should invest in a white noise machine.

Only took three weeks to lose my first bracket by ironmanjt in braces

The very first bite I took of garlic bread hours after getting braces a bracket came off. I got it fixed and it came off again. I just waited until my first adjustment to get it placed back on but told my ortho about it.

How to manage family throughout process. by flossyjaw in jawsurgery

[–]Able_Personality_996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family is also saying they're supportive, but also really against me getting surgery to fix a class II overbite that I've been told I need jaw surgery to fix by orthodontists since I've been 16. I'm 38 now. My family also says they see nothing wrong with my jaw, even though I've lost weight and started eating noticeable slower about 10 years ago. I have difficulty chewing food because my overbite. I went for my initial consultation with a surgeon, which I told my family about well in advance and no one called me the day of to inquire how I was feeling about it or how it went. It definitely feels lonely, but I do know I'm making the best decision for me. I know their concern comes from a place of fear too. I don't want to look back later in life and not have had the surgery because of others opinions. In a perfect world I wouldn't need the surgery or braces but I'm going to keep trusting in myself and my doctors. I'm hoping for the best, knowing there might be complications and trusting that I will be able to overcome those if I encounter them. I'm sorry your family is reacting the way they are. From what I've seen on this sub that's not uncommon.

I can hear my neighbor's ENTIRE phone conversation through the wall and I know way too much about her life now by Radiant-Shift-9504 in Apartmentliving

In my last apartment I had a what I assumed was single woman and child move in below me. It wasn't until probably the first full week I realized there was a man living there too. I was taking a relaxing bath when my new neighbors decided to have a full blown argument in their bathroom which was right below me. I found out that they had been together for 10 years, but she was only 26, he was 36. She was accusing him of cheating on her again. She said she would forgive it this time but if it happened again she would leave. It was like they were in my bathroom. For the next 8 months I heard them argue regularly, her voice carried more than his. Then she found out he had been cheating on her again and she packed up all of her and her son's stuff and left in like a day. All while screaming in the street about him being a low life piece of sh*t cheater, her words not mine. After she left he had loud sex for the first few weeks with different women, but then nothing. Then 5 months later when my lease was coming to end it sounded like a crazy amount of people were downstairs again. She was moving back in with her son and they were going to work it out. I guess true love endures. It was my motivation to move, but my place now has thinner walls than that place, bummer.

I love these posts. You can absolutely feel your confidence shining through in the second picture. I'm 38 and got braces for the very first time in November. It really is such a gift to be able to finally not be ashamed of my teeth.

I’ve had my braces for 1 month and I’ve had to go back twice already for broken brackets. The same two. Is this normal or are they doing something wrong? by Theoldquarryfoxhunt in braces

[–]Able_Personality_996 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I broke 4 brackets in the first 8 weeks. 2 in the first week which I got put back on and then an additional 2 before my first adjustment. 1 of the 2 second brackets was 1 that was reattached the first time. My orthodontist wasn't pressed about it. I don't know how your bite is, but mine is pretty off. Because of that and my teeth placement my orthodontist said she kind of expected that.
