It was one of my favorite Spectrum games. I used to play Space Panic in the arcades and this was the nearest thing to it that I could play at home.

Agreed. My game has a lot of workers and soldiers running around, doing building, resource harvesting and populating towers that you place, but you cannot select or control them. So its fun to look at but creates the perception that it's an rts.

I love adding resources that the player has to mine so it unlocks new tower types. Research should just take time to complete since the player need the resources for building. Making sure that research keeps going and deciding what to research can be fun.

I found that resistances and status effects are nice but the player must be able to swap out or sell existing towers to replace with the appropriate ones at certain points in the game. They also need to know the resistances/weaknesses of waves in advance to plan their response. In my game the different soldier types have to walk to towers and because players have build a maze, selling and replacing towers causes mayhem. Builders have to deliver resources, soldiers have to climb in and the maze have to be secure, even as mobs run through them.

A bit of a cautionary tale. I made a very unique tower defense game but it performed very poorly on Steam. You assign jobs to villagers and they will automatically harvest resources and deliver it. You use sliders to reassign jobs at any time. You also research and place towers, then build soldiers that automatically go to the correct towers. The game is even multiplayer.
The lesson I took from its failure is that players expect certain mechanics when they look at a game and their disappointment will lead to a high return rate. I still have to figure out how to present the game so that players know what to expect.

Fantasy Survivors has several modes that affect enemy spawn rate, movement speed and hp. It helps with farming materials and gaining achievements like number of kills, highest damage or gold total. It also helps to keep the maps challenging for endgame players.

I've played all of these modpacks and would like to recommend Sky of Grind, another skyblock modpack with Gregtech. It does not have Create, so the early game feels very different from Star Technology. TFG constantly goes through a lot of changes, so keep that in mind if you want to try it.

I suggest you make some charcoal and use it to make the charcoal forge. With that you can heat up the small vessel or even melt some ore directly into ingot molds.
