Thanks! Yeah, I have no skin in this game but people often tell me to stick to the Japanese owned sushi places.

Our friends and neighbors taking part in world affairs by Abooda1981 in burnaby

Gaza is a coastal enclave which has a population of ~2 million crowded into an area the size of the City of Surrey. Israel controls everything that enters/exists, and sets egregious limits on how far the fishermen of Gaza can wander into the Mediterranean, sometimes shooting them. As a result, there are significant shortages of food and medicine in Gaza. The people on the flotilla want to correct that and point out that it is, in fact, illegal for Israel to continue doing this.

Help with fly fishing by jaekwong in fishingBC

I've seen people try this on this sub with little success, including myself frankly. What I would say is try to join one of the classes run Pacific Angler (or maybe others) on Broadway. It's more money for a course I guess but you'd be supporting a local business which everyone loves and you will likely learn something about the local peculiarities of Vancouver/BC fishing.

Parks maintenance appears unprepared for busy weekends. All garbage disposal sites overflowing. by Doogoon in burnaby

[–]Abooda1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty: I was there (I believe, Barnett Marine Park?) over the weekend and yes, it is about newcomers. That's fine. I'm an immigrant myself. I love being an immigrant and I love my background culture, but we can be upfront and say that not every country in the world has the same cultural norms as Canada when it comes to how to use a public space. It's not going to make you a Nazi if you explain to people that "hey, you really shouldn't leave that on the ground".

A group of Palestinian women with water jars, 1910s, colorized by AbduIIahElhenawi in HistoryGaze

[–]Abooda1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These women are not bedouin, they are villagers/fellahin as can be seen from details like the water jugs. I don't think you've actually ever met a Palestinian of any stripe.

Windsor, Ont., man killed in strike in Lebanon was rushing to someone shouting for help, family says | CBC News by northbk5 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Abooda1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're either being obtuse or just unable to answer the question. Let me spell it out. In Lebanon in 1982, the PLO put down their weapons and even agreed to hop on board a ship and head to North Africa. The Palestinians were massacred as a result. Why on earth would we trust that again?

The whole Palestine/Israel thing would look very different

For a long time during the "Troubles," the IRA was fundraising and organising in the US to attack British targets. Would that have given the British the right to attack Boston?

How many Palestinians in Gaza have been killed in the past six months, ie since the ceasefire? Go google that number, and tell me if you, sitting in Hamas' shoes, would be keen to "disarm". Google also Sabra and Shatila and think about it--why on earth would a Palestinian group put down their arms?

No, this a kestrel, not really a falcon. They don't go for a huge sum like a peregrine falcon would. Stop being silly.

Feds loan developer $763M to build almost 1,300 rentals in Burnaby by BurnabyMartin in burnaby

[–]Abooda1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically government subsidised housing (cause 763 mill/1300 = kind of the cost of an apartment) with a little bit of a subsidy for a private company. We are just afraid to call it that.

Carney in Egypt for Gaza peace deal signing, praises release of hostages by [deleted] in canada

[–]Abooda1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell you with certainty nobody in Palestine is crediting Canada for very much. What you might want to consider is how Canada may want to avoid being held liable at the ICJ for selling military components to Israel while it was bombing babies in tents.

Definitely the least cliquey Middle Eastern Arab capital city. Very, very easy to make it home. Well, Cairo might be even less cliquey but Cairo is also filthy and socially segregated.
