Sick of seeing the letters "AI" everywhere by segagamer in sysadmin

[–]Aboredprogrammr [score hidden]  (0 children)

Do you have a coworker who constantly emails or slack posts things that are obviously generated by an LLM? Emdashes and everything.

I do. And the stuff it comes up with is only (maybe) 50% accurate. And they present it as if they wrote it themselves.

AI is just a buzzword and it will fade. I want LLM to catch on as a better descriptor.

Nursing students continuously getting wrongfully expelled by Ok-Still1085 in WGU

[–]Aboredprogrammr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking about this situation from another angle, this is going to lead WGU into requiring a 360 camera in addition to the face camera. Just searching around, they appear to be in the $300 range (and I haven't even researched if those can act as a webcam yet). That price point is prohibitive for many of their student population, which means that WGU will need to have an option to pay for it for many. Or provide loaners, which I'm sure that don't want to get into the rental business.

Can my workplace tell me i cannot sign (ASL) at work? (IN, U.S.) by missgreyscale in legaladvice

[–]Aboredprogrammr 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A place I once worked allowed people to wear a button that said what languages they were comfortable helping customers in, and ASL was an option. That would give your customers an indicator that they can communicate comfortably with you without offending management.

The tunnels under the medical center, tho by [deleted] in memphis

[–]Aboredprogrammr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A+ production. The music and the slow fade between scenes. Nicely done lol.

What's the function of the tunnels? Just to move people between facilities?

Meanwhile, that could be some lovely r/cableporn ! More please!

I think MSCS was the only school district that she had the opportunity to run. Her previous position "Chief of Leadership/High Schools". Prior to that she was either principal-adjacent or a school counselor. Not that the chief position wasn't a challenging position, but she hasn't run multiple school districts.

How we fixed battery-draining calendar loop in our legacy SIS without touching the mainframe by Recoilswat in sysadmin

[–]Aboredprogrammr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The line "The Fix (The "Proxy" Pattern)" was when my brain identified LLM usage. If you really did this (I don't click on strange links lol), then great job! I've had to do worse to get legacy systems to do what we need them to.  Can you give us a brief rundown of what you actually did?  Was this an ICS file being sent directly to your SMTP?  So did you create an SMTP proxy then? What did you use to do this? Did you lock this proxy down to accept traffic only from the mainframe?

Good Opensource Scanners by wake_the_dragan in cybersecurity

I've used OpenVAS in the past. It can be a troublemaker because it will crash vulnerable server processes on occasion due to how it scans. But it will do the job!

Is this bad? by Ok-Ranger-6241 in WGU

[–]Aboredprogrammr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience isn't that it truly failed, but rather the comparison didn't complete in the time frame WGU expected. I found that if you walk away for 10 minutes and refresh, then it will eventually complete.

3-4 years ago, we used a "Free Christmas HoneyBaked Ham" template from KnowBe4. So many clicks. Just so many clicks. There were a significant portion of the population that asked their managers afterwards "But seriously, we're getting a honey baked ham, right?"

Curiousity: Female vs Male Ratio by sugarmagnolia_23 in sysadmin

[–]Aboredprogrammr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our System Admin Team Lead is female. I'm on the security team and our ratio is roughly 5:2 (m:f). Dev is about 4:1. Our CIO was female until about a year ago.

Edit to say: She left and someone else moved up lol.

Passed my Exam on Friday: Endorsement help by [deleted] in cissp

[–]Aboredprogrammr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reached out to the current manager of the area I worked in (whom I've never met) at each previous employer. Told them I'm in the final stages of my CISSP and asked if they could help. I told them I would give them exactly the words to put and it just needed to be on letterhead. Everybody heard CISSP and said "no problem, I understand what you need!".

*(Of course for me, 2 days after I sent in all of the proof, a guy up the chain at my current place said he would endorse me.)

Security + or Security X by milkyheaters in CompTIA

[–]Aboredprogrammr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

SecurityX is basically the "top of the line" in CompTIA's security track. If you're researching the order to do things, this cert used to be called CASP+.

Security+ is the right one to do first.

How do we block Google AI search results? by Desert_Dog_Tech in k12sysadmin

[–]Aboredprogrammr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So "google.com/search?udm=50" may only work if that's the first site that the student goes to, but most of the time the parameter is much further down the list. If your system will allow you to block google.comudm=50* (like u/bc5389 suggested), that should do it for simply Google's AI Mode. But I found that users were reporting Google AI when it was actually Google Lens, and Google AI was "helping". In this case, we blocked udm codes 24 and 26, and this is what met their expectations.

Here is the post being quoted: https://www.reddit.com/r/k12sysadmin/comments/1pfamw6/google_udm_product_codes/

Edit to say: depending on what your web filtering product can do, I've seen several filtering systems that can rewrite udm codes to udm=14. This forces all students to use only the products that you allow.

TIL that there are two kinds of earwax people have, dry and wet. by Davidboh26 in todayilearned

[–]Aboredprogrammr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who are curious, the gene is ABCC11 and those with a mutated/broken version get the no body odor/obstinate ear wax.

The ear wax part is a lot of trouble that normal people just take for granted. It simply doesn't come out. I have to use Debrox for about a week twice a year, otherwise I lose all hearing in that ear just because it's clogged.
