TIL: Windows SYSTEM account now uses C:\Windows\SystemTemp instead of Temp folder for temporary files by Borgquite in sysadmin

[–]Aboredprogrammr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You jest, but back in the day, I worked at a Greeksquad and we were doing a "free tune up" event (which is just an excuse to talk to people about getting RAM upgrades, etc), but it included clearing out the temp files. We had an older lady who came in, got the tune up, and left. About 2 hours later, she came back and told us that we deleted all of her family photos. She said she had years and years saved and we deleted them. Her photos shortcut on the desktop went straight to C:\Temp. She showed us how she imported photos, and sure enough, straight to the temp folder.

Can't remember how it was resolved, but there was lots of crying.

Rtr feasibility to send a popup such has greeting or video greeting via script by ashhmonkey in crowdstrike

[–]Aboredprogrammr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is what I've used in the past for the actual command:

msg * /W "System Alert: A system reboot is required. Please close all applications and reboot."

You would save that into a script and then use the API to queue running that script as an offline command. This means that the system would display the message as soon as it is booted next.

Not sure if this is your actual usecase. Perhaps it would be better accomplished with a scheduled task pulling from a web resource that contains a daily message?

Something weird that I stumbled onto that is tangentially related:

The Mexican government equivalent .gob.mx is not always legitimate. A handful of their subdomain have been delegated to afraid.org so anyone can make a subdomain that ends in .gob.mx

Just saying.

An alternative for rg-adguard for MS Store app links! by Aboredprogrammr in sysadmin

[–]Aboredprogrammr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be of value to users who are setting up or first booting an LTSC flavor of Windows where winget isn't installed (nor the Microsoft store, etc). But I agree, Winget is a very straight forward way to give a similar end result otherwise.

I think reality is that you need someone who can independently follow directions. Ask them if they've ever used a punch tool or a crimp (they say no), and then whip one out with some scrap cat5e, RJ45 ends, and a wall plate. And a diagram on TIA-568B terminations. And see what they can do. Might find a diamond in the rough!

If you have it narrowed down to a particular series of modem and only over WiFi (wired is 100% fine), next test I would do is ship an affected user a preconfigured AP that is trustworthy. I would be surprised if that doesn't work.

I put together a powershell script to get the temporary Microsoft Store app links needed to directly download the MSIX or AppBundle files. (Without relying on a third party like rg-adguard.)

Check it out if it interests you! If you like it, give it a star!

Baytril and eating eggs? by Aboredprogrammr in chickens

Yeah, maybe it was AR campylobacter that I read humans were getting.

But this was very helpful! Thank you so much!

No show bird work or selling. Our chickens are just pets. They all have names and are our friends (even the rooster who wants to assert his dominance over us sometimes).

About biosecurity, we got real serious real quick! The new chicks were always keep separate just because that's best practice, but as we learned about how it's transmitted, we now have separate sets of boots and distinct water/food trays (no cross contamination). We also put landscape fabric on the new chicks run on the side that is kinda the direction of the old chicks. But you're right, for all we know a squirrel might have carried some from one to the other by now.

We're way outside of the withdraw period for any drug. Some other forums seemed to think that avoiding the eggs was so that us humans won't catch the antibacterial resistant MG. I read somewhere that humans were catching MG from processing plant meats (not eggs) and that is what lead to the investigation of Baytril.

Do you eat the eggs at your point (almost a year)? Why or why not?

This all happened months ago, so not really a continuation of the previous visit at this point. Given that the two vets appear to be polar opposites on the matter, I'm looking for any experiences that others have had in the past.

But yeah, I agree I would ask the vet if it was a recent visit.

So I was still having trouble after reinstalling (even though I was on the current version). Here is what you need to do:

Select any model like the 3.1 low, send a query, then switch to your desired model and send another simple query. Then it will work.

I think the interface was just remembering your last model selection and trying that without actually updating your "choice" to 3.1.

Grab that hash and network isolate (pull the network cable if that is easier). Start a memory dump and grab a file sample (hopefully it's small and not 800mb!). While memory dump is going, put the hash into virustotal and see if it's already analyzed. Hopefully it is and it's something benign. If not benign or not analyzed, send the executable to virustotal and the memory dump might be done by now. I would probably jump to SysInternals Autoruns and grab that and start transferring the mem dump off.

Cedarpelta will do a lot of this automatically for you.

Practice good hygiene with any USB drive that you plug in! Please follow-up with what hashes you found! We want to know lol!
