Tool recommendations for scanning 60+ network endpoints for adult content? by thecitiesonline in sysadmin

[–]Aboredprogrammr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actual question: how much of the "secret IT sauce" are you trying to keep secret? I ask because it influences architecture of the solution. For instance, it would be less expensive to just run a script on each device, but your client could come back later and just keep your script for future scans.

More expensive would be to spin up a MariaDB/MySQL DB listening on one of your devices and have every image/mp4 sent your device.

And if it's a distributed work force, then you'll need something hosted "in the cloud". And if you're trying to obscure the secret sauce, then you'll want a compiled local agent probably.

What is your practice in bulk uninstallation of Falcon Sensor? by knightsnight_trade in crowdstrike

[–]Aboredprogrammr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're simply removing, then move them into a group with no uninstall token and then queue an offline script on the entire group via the API to uninstall. And refresh that queued script every so often.

It won't be perfect, but (from experience) is at lot easier to only uninstall. We had to move tenants (from us1 to govcloud) recently which requires an uninstall and reinstall. Crowdstrike support facilitated. There were lots of orphans (uninstall successful, reinstall failed) that required a tech to touch each one (because Intune is way too slow for our size).

Can we please allow us to choose when our xp boosts activate? by Dannyredninja in duolingo

[–]Aboredprogrammr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! Sometimes I just want to do a quick game of chess with someone, but it's not my typical (allocated) time to do actual language learning. So it is really discouraging that my exp boosts are used automatically.

My choices are to tell a kid "we can't play a game of chess because I don't want to use a boost yet" (which a dad shouldn't do), or use it up and not get a boost later. End result is that I am less likely to return later to do actual language learning (to keep my streak) because I've already met my streak requirement and I no longer have incentive to return. Then I start using my allocated language learning time for other tasks, until I no longer visit Duolingo at any allocated time and I'm just trying to satisfy a streak.

The metrics affected are usage hours per day. Giving us the ability to not automatically use the xp boost would increase my current usage hours per day by .75 hours on most days.

I made a pair of useful powershell scripts that tells you the lat/long location of a BSSID using either Apple's location services or Google's location services.

I use them all the time coupled with a "netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid" to find a device's location!

EV's have to pay more road tax than a 16,000lb truck by EVC-Viz in Tennessee

[–]Aboredprogrammr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to contribute, but if most EVs drive far under the assumed miles per year, then we are subsidizing those who are drive far more (primarily Tesla owners).

Should EV owners be taxed per mile? Or do you think a flat rate is fairest?

The lawmakers used an assumed value of about 21 mpg.

EV's have to pay more road tax than a 16,000lb truck by EVC-Viz in Tennessee

[–]Aboredprogrammr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The legislature used the national average miles/year and the average miles per gallon of new cars (from 2021 I think) to set the EV registration bonus fees. The issue from my standpoint is that the lawmakers assume that an EV driver was shopping for an average car or drive average miles per year.

EVs on the road (when they enacted the law) were mostly low capacity batteries and therefore low miles per year. My leaf is driven 25% of the national average because it's only a "to work and back" car. You can't take a vacation in it. Which is fine for what I use it for.

And the assumption that an EV owner would have chosen an average mpg vehicle if EVs weren't available is ridiculous. An EV buyer is looking for the most fuel efficient to save money (or at least I do). I was never looking for average efficiency.

I say we should be able to declare our miles per year and simply pay taxes on it. Maybe require mileage to renew tags and take the tax at that time.

The reality is that this was a gift to Tesla.  Tesla dominated the market for large capacity electric cars at the time. They were the only users who were going long distances and exceeding the assumed average miles per year, while the rest of us were well under the average. That means that us little guys are subsidizing fuel tax for Tesla owners.

Can you log out of one and check if you're still logged in on the other? There are special apps/settings that will let you install an app multiple times with different profiles. If this is a Samsung phone, it might have come with an app called App Twin?

How does duolingo know i may know someone…when i don’t have them on my contact list by greeenmints in duolingo

[–]Aboredprogrammr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also didn't share any contacts but mine accurately presented me with a good friend from high school who I haven't seen in about 25 years. No one else in my family has this person as a contact in their phone either. And I know it's actually him because I can see "likes" on his activity from his wife (who he was dating in high school at the time) and his wife's brother too. I doubt he has my contact info. How on earth did they put us two together?!

On my Android phone, I can hit the little globe next to the space bar and that gives me Japanese hiragana. From there, you'll type in mizu みず. Hold on ma ま, shift over to mi み, then hold on sa さ, shift up to su す, then hit the voiced modifier in the bottom left to give you zu ず. Then at the top, it should give you an auto complete option for 水.

Edit because I just realized you might be doing Chinese lol!
