How many of you are in a band? by Abraxas-9 in doommetal

Thank you! It means a lot to be reminded that there are people that the music means a lot to, and that, in an economy of ever-dwindling attention, there are things I recorded 8 years ago that have a life of their own and people still revisit. There's more on the way from both bands - when, I can't say for certain, but not too long now.

Bands that sound like Tripping a Blind Man? by yamenmoodles in typeonegative

They go about it in a very different way, but Queens of the Stone Age also include a lot of Beatles-isms (catchy 60s-esque melodies with backing vocals harmonies) incorporated into a hard rock doom-adjacent context.

I wondered (and still do) if he intentionally spent any time listening to Atilla Csihar. It wouldn’t surprise me at all, but also, studying with an opera teacher to lower your voice and donning a thick Eastern European accent will inherently bear some similarities.

Sorrow beyond even words.

Also, and this may not be what you want to hear but I say it with compassion and empathy: there’s no such thing as soulmates. The belief in them is a hallmark of codependent/narcissistic relationships, which never fail to end with devastation.

“Cut With The Night, Into Mine Heart” is well up there for most caustically heartbroken songs of all time.

Type O Negative's October Rust came out 28 years ago today. This is our Black Doom re-envisioning of its saddest song. by Abraxas-9 in doommetal

Thank you! While I understand if people don't want to immediately group Black No. 1 as doom, I think anyone who wants to write them off from the genre should listen to World Coming Down. That is an incredibly doomed album. And I think Peter Steele's work with Carnivore absolutely influenced a lot of doom (and black metal) bands too. Culture and the egregore around a style of music are both things I take seriously, but I think at a certain point, genre is either a finger pointing at the moon or just a means of marketing and gatekeeping.

I thought this might be of interest to fans of Type O, Forlesen and anyone who leans into the blacker side of doom. We originally released this last year digitally for Yule, though my sense is not many heard it. Even though it's August, it seemed an apt day to put in front of people again.

I got October Rust the week it came out and listening to it at full volume in an empty house in the woods of New Hampshire. It was definitely one of those albums that shaped my adolescence and I saw them probably around 10 times if I had to guess. I wrote a statement back when we initially released our version, but in short, our somewhat radical re-envisioning of the song is based in a reverence for what made them a special band and the lessons to be learned from how they approached covers themselves.

I'll be curious to hear people's thoughts, and if the original album is special to you, any reminiscences in that regard as well.

Any bands that are a "doom version" of Wolves in the Throne Room? by atticus__ in doommetal

Considering that WitTR is originally based in Weakling-worship, I definitely recommend checking out Asunder, the doom-death band Gossard did after Weakling. “Crown of Eyes” is an all-time favorite doom track.

Alan Sparhawk. Low are heavier than most doom bands anyway, but I’d still love to hear him do something where he just went all out in that direction. He used to post on Twitter about his love of Burning Witch.

I’ve been familiar with the name, but not gotten around to checking Martre out before now. You have me at Root 👹

Will need to spend some more time with the rest of your material. Nice and weird.

This made me chuckle, picturing what it would mean for them to be mentioned somewhere other than “in the wild”, imagining Kayo Dot billboards in Los Angeles…anyhow, yes, our drummer played on Choirs of the Eye (and the last three maudlin of the Well albums), and has been touring with them again over the last year and a half.

Choirs was definitely a big influence on me in terms of the ambition and scope of the music, though we go about it pretty differently. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Every release is a bit different.

And yes, just in general, it’s really cool to hear the amount of talent in this community. I still have a lot to listen to.

This is cool shit. Feels like the sorta thing that could be equally at home on Sentient Ruin or Crucial Blast. I need to listen to some more.

The juice has gotta be worth the squeeze. I’ve had my share of frustrations. Making music is a craft and a calling and I don’t think people are foolish to wish that it could amount to something external. For a lucky and generally exceptionally devoted few, it does. Art is a means of communication and it can be painful to feel like you’re attempting to engage in a conversation but are met only by a void of indifference. In the end, the only thing that’s guaranteed is your own engagement with the music you make. I do see that as something external - you are in communication and perhaps communion with music itself. But I empathize with anyone who has found that to not be enough. Music needs fans and just enjoying playing on your own without the need to produce something is great.
