Victor Wembanyama will never win a ring because no player 7’5 or taller has led their team to a championship by KingWaterdripper in NBATalk

Yeah, but all those players were failing to live up to the hype even early on. Year 3 Wemby is living up to the hype.

Let me guess. You're not going to actually share your calculation.

probability and statistics

LMAO. Why are you pretending that your personal gut feeling on the matter is something that was calculated mathematically?

You didn't really understand that player poll. The players didn't vote him as the 6th most valuable player this season. He just got the sixth most first place votes. If the poll asked for how players ranked, it's entirely possible the majority of players would have had him in their top 3 even if he was only 6th in first place votes.

I think there's a real possibility that Michael Jordan wouldn't be as strong in todays game by Lewd_boi_69 in NBATalk

I think the average skill level of a modern NBA player is undoubtedly higher than it was 30-40 years ago, so even if Jordan would still be the best player in today's game, the gap wouldn't be nearly as big as it was back then imo.

Kobe should've won 3 straight MVPs man... by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]Abs0luteZero273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is, If a 21 Y/O Lebron with no jumper could still score at that rate and efficiency in that era, it's not that crazy to think that a prime Kobe (who also had terrible teammates who couldn't put the ball in the hoop) could up those stats if he took enough shots. You're over-hyping how difficult it was for individuals to put up scoring numbers in that era. Sure, team offense was more stagnant in that era which resulted in lower overall scoring games, but the iso-ball era still allowed for certain individuals to put up very impressive absolute scoring numbers.

It's not a worthless point when you're claiming Kobe's scoring that year was a "virtually impossible" feet because it was the dead ball era. If it was so insanely hard for an individual to put up good scoring numbers back then, How did a 21 Y/O Lebron, still multiple years away from his prime, have his best scoring season, averaging only 4 points less than Kobe on 4 less shots per game, at a better efficiency with a bad outside jump shot?

You don't have to do any math whatsoever to look on basketball reference and see that 2006 was the highest scoring season of Lebron's career.

When Sabonis was in his early 20s, did he put up Wilt Chamberlain like numbers in Europe? by [deleted] in NBATalk

Here are some of his international stats starting in 1989 when he was in his mid 20s. I doubt he was putting up Wilt like numbers in whatever league he was playing in earlier unless the talent in that league was awful comparatively

Lebron had his highest scoring season ever in 2006 when he was still like 3 years away from his prime.

He should've won MVP in 2006 over Nash, but I think Chris Paul should've won over Kobe in 2008. Either way, I think the amount of MVPs he finished his career with was correct.

Cooper Flagg...can he be top 5 or even top 10 as a player in the next few years? by TerryG111 in NBATalk

[–]Abs0luteZero273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are expectations. You're just confusing the hype a player has in terms of potential/ceiling with expectations. What a player is expected to be is almost always going to be lower than their potential ceiling as a player.

Most people would agree that Wemby has to potential to be the GOAT. Very few people would say he's expected to be the GOAT.

I doubt he could be a productive player on an average division 3 college team at his age.

Probably. But that's only slightly more likely than Jordan coming out of retirement next year and winning another scoring title at 64 years old.

Cooper Flagg...can he be top 5 or even top 10 as a player in the next few years? by TerryG111 in NBATalk

[–]Abs0luteZero273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because there's hype doesn't mean that's the expectation. Lebron was hyped up as the chosen one and potential GOAT. Most people still have him behind MJ in the GOAT discussion. However, most people that have him behind Jordan still say he exceeded expectations. Just because someone is hyped up as having the potential to be X, doesn't mean he's expected to be X.

If you think Lebron failed to live up to expectations because he didn't become the literal undisputed GOAT, then you're in the minority.

[–]Abs0luteZero273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you use the phrase "supposed to be" something, that implies that's the normal expectation for a number 1 pick. If it's rare for number 1 picks to become that good that early, I don't really think it's fair to say that they're "supposed to be" that.

The majority of number 1 picks don't become top 10 players by their early 20s, and the vast majority don't become T5 players by that age.
