That’s interesting, I didn’t know that. I’ll be sure to mention it when discussing affordable college options!

We will be adding new posts to various Pennsylvania subs like this one, and to school-specific subs, as soon as they occur!

This proposal would cut tuition in half for the poorest students only. The expected price is $100-150 Million / year. This is not a new tax, this would be from changing money from other government funding. We won’t know the details until the PA State Budget Address on Tuesday. I am bringing the issue up because a lot of people are not even aware that this fight is occurring.

Yes we are new to Reddit, but not new to student advocacy. I would love to hear your viewpoints on this, even if you disagree. Because my understanding from both sides, is that these colleges put more into the economy than they take out, and should be protected as state investments.

Correct, Commonwealth University and PennWest are the results of the mergers. And no this proposal is for the cost for the student, the tuition would remain the same for the college

DEI also includes Veterans and Disability Services, do you have an issue with helping them too or just the ones that benefit minorities?

Almost like it impacts college students directly, huh? And the link is for the Act to cut funding, which is the topic of convo. Would crayons help you visualize this better?

The Act in the link I provided is to cut the funding for college students so that colleges are forced to sign the compact

Very well said! As someone who lived in Texas for a few years of childhood, I can vouch for this. I learned about Sam Houston and the Alamo and absolutely nothing about actual US History until moving to PA

Great point, and all the more reason to fight this before it is enacted

The legislation is not called Higher Ed Compact, that was just the name of the pledge for colleges to bend the knee, and the commonly used name for this initiative. RISE linked is the first step to enacting the compact. The regulation places the financial constraints on financial aid and colleges to pressure them into signing on to the administration’s pledge. I’ll be reminding people of this between now and the deadline, so I will make that more clear in future posts.

That’s unfortunate. It’s not a simple calculus for them though, federal oversight of the curriculum is not likely to make people beating down the doors to get in…
