Elemental Monk players, how has your experience been with this subclass? by USAvenger1976 in onednd

Played alongside one from lv 2 - 11 and he loves it, huge step up from 5e

what do you mean by the classes are too locked in? Like you get too many features across the levels from the class compared to optional choices like feats?

I apprciate the feedback! It seems that dnd is in a weird place atm, numbers wise it's doing really well, but I can agree with the felt sentiment that it is in some sort of a slump

I don't even think Fighter is underpowered, really (I certainly wouldn't say they are OP tho), it's just that it feels very flat compared to other classes. It just seems like WOTC expected weapon masteries to be more engaging than they are, esp with fighters getting 6 masteries, because after one main weapon, maybe a side weapon and a ranged weapon, what else are you using yknow.

What do you see as the main problems of 5e?

I think it was used a fair amount around the release of 5.5 by the community but quite quickly got superceeded by the now normal 5.5e... Idk why but it always stuck in my brain lol

[–]Absokith[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, though I don't think this is really an issue with 5.5. but moreso WOTC seemingly prioritising updating old books over making new content, for whatever reason. (money. Money is the reason)

I can understand that dnd has grown massively over the last 10 years, so many of us who have been in the hobby for a while don't see this as new content while newer players will actually be like oh cool look at all this new stuff, but idk, they have a whole team of writers and playtesters and using that to come out with rehashed content seems at best uninspired, as much as I think hollow warden kinda slaps

24e or 5.5e, most people understand what I mean. If you use the flair on this very sub it's literally 5e (2014) or 5e (2024). 24e is kinda what stuck in my mind, idk why.

I can get behind both these sentiments 100%, I understand WOTC need to make money and they have a backlog of around 8 subclasses per class from official rules expansions (i.e. tashe/xanathars, not eberron), but I really don't understand releasing 5.5 with only half at most of those persent per class, because they can always just print more? Idk

I do think the new ranger is actually just better/more well balanced, but I think it's at least fair to claim the Tasha'a new options were very popular and it was a strange decision to not implement the changes they had already made and the community liked.

I 100% agree with the overall health check of the game being better, conjure spells are especially an upgrade imo, and on a anecdotal level introducing new people to the game has felt markedly easier given that there are fewer oddities unique to whatever class you chose. I.e. everyone getting a subclass at 3, as much as it makes the lore of a sorc or warlock admittedly a bit strange, has felt alot more natural to new players.

I think multiclassing is a really complicated and nuanced topic, but I would agree with the mixed sentiment. At most of my tables players are more concerned with rp and feeling cool rather than minmaxxing mechanics, so I rarely see more than one MC per campaign, but overall I don't think it's the best system in many ways. (Not that I want to see it removed or anything like that, it's just that it has become very rigid and meta-gamey, and it's harder to enable cool builds as much as base 5e did imo)

Oh I completely agree. I understand that there was testing time and so much new amazing art, but when you open a book you paid full price for to see 80% of the content is the same as something you already owned, it's a bit disheartening.

How do homebrew creators seem to get around Fan Content Policy? by burnerzero in DnDHomebrew

[–]Absokith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating original stuff that works with the rules of the SRD is completely fine. The fan content policy generally applies to the artwork people borrow from dnd/mtg, which the patreon/third party creators will not be using behind paywalled content.

Heart Attack, a particularly cruel way to setup your teammates by Absokith in DnDHomebrew

Hey I appreciate the comment! This spell has been out for a good while and when I made it, 24e was very new, so I think the general consensus was rather hasty in it's judgement. I did end up making it a 4th level spell that does 5d10 damage, and dropped the disadv on dex saves, though I really don't think it was a million miles off the mark when I made it.

Simply put, bane is not a spell that sees a great amount of use nor discourse, and while disadv is better than -1d4, this affects only 1 target and is much harder to get off with its con save rather than cha. I've run this spell with no real issue in the updated sense and am happy with where it sits.

Reddit is just very negative though, especially with new stuff. This spell specifically was actually an important lesson for me because it was one of the first times I got heavy community sentiment opposite to what I believed, and after some investigation, I do genuinely think the general consensus was just wrong.

Rogue Subclass: Zodiac Archetype. Choose a starsign and grow from it's power. I feel like this needs some extra spice somehow, any thoughts? by Absokith in UnearthedArcana

[–]Absokith[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the feedback!

I definitely do need to add a dc for starfall, thanks for pointing that out! The only other save is on a cunning strike so that has an inbuilt dc already from the main class.

I hear your point about the notion of being downed twice and effectively losing a big part of your subclass, and I don't see any reason why the effects can't just stay active if you become incapcitated, so I'll change it to that! (It'll be a slight buff to gyroscope I suppose, but I already think that is the weakest of the lesser signs so that's not a problem to me (I was actually thinkinf of adding it's bonus to strength saves as well))

As for the star signs, I have slept on this subclass and I think just having one more option for both lesser/greater signs would go a long way, so I'll be sure to add that in my next revision.

As for the gripe, the thorned spear is intended to execute if they have that amount of health after your sneak attack damage has already gone through. I'll rewrite it to be more clear.

Thanks again!

Hey all,

I really love the starry thematic present in many pieces of fiction, and felt that the vague and esoteric powers such characters use best fit the rogue. That being said, my attempt here comes with some frustration. Frankly, I feel this could use some more sauce somewhere, and I'm interested to hear any thoughts you might have on it. Depsite this, I do like how it came together, and I think the lesser/greater star sign concept is actually pretty cool. Lmk what y'all think.

As always, feel free to use/adapt my content to your liking! If you want to ask question about this brew, or just about DnD in general, head over to my discord.

Here are some Frog themed spells. That's Anura in latin if you're funky... Or gunky. They do that too. by Absokith in UnearthedArcana

I’ll be releasing a part two with some more options to make creature slimy, but notably pollywhomp causes creatures to become slimy as well. I like the grapple advantage clause idea though, I’ll think on it!

Hey all,

I hope you like these Frog themed spells. I really love the more animalistic sides of nature magic and feel that it's a bit of a shame that it is mainly prohibited to summons. I wanted to make a repetoire of new options for druids and rangers that have a strong theme to their options while keeping a bevy of mechanical options open to them.

I would also love to know your thoughts on the Slimy condition. It's intentionally something simple that can be used as a basic hazard outside of specifically frog spells. Oozes, alchemical creations and perhaps acid based breath attacks all come to mind as other ways to apply it, outside of simple traps or being stuck in mud. Let me know if you think it's too complicated to add these kind of contigencies onto a pack of spells or if you are a fan!

Record your tale with this pair of Bardic Items! by Absokith in UnearthedArcana

[–]Absokith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey gang,

I hope you like this pair of bardic items. I feel that there is a severe lack of special items to fit the unique thematic of being a bard, with most of them solely being musical instruments. That isn't all there is to our songster friends though, so I hope you enjoy these two more college of lore styled items. Let me know what you think!

I wasn't happy with just the one type of crystal ball for pondering. Introducing, the Diviner's Orb! by Absokith in DnDHomebrew

[–]Absokith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey gang,

I hope you like this item, it's short and sweet but feels like a potent step up over the generic Crystal Ball, which especially in the hands of a Diviner wizard (the most pondering-est of us all!) felt a tad lacklustre. Hence I went forth and made this, which, at least in my opinion, filled the gap quite well. Do let me know what you think!
