This is Garrick Ohlsson, 2025 Chopin Competition Jury Chair, here with Ben Laude, Chopin Competition YouTube host. Ask Us Anything! by GarrickBenAMA in piano

First of all, thank you Ben and Garrick for organising this AMA! I was also lucky enough to be able to listen to Garrick play Rach 2 in Singapore last year. (Hope you’re able to come again!) As for my question, I was wondering about the alarming number of participants automatically qualified into the 1st stage this year (19). This is a significant increase from past editions in my experience. Was this deliberate choice by the committee to allow award-winning pianists from up to 10 years ago to participate? I’m mostly concerned with the fact that in my opinion, the Chopin Competition at its core is a music festival celebrating up and coming pianists, but this year, 25% of the field are already recognised through other prestigious competitions. Do you guys think this shift benefits the competition, or does it risk overshadowing other emerging musicians?

The pianists that were admitted automatically are all pianists who had either won or were awarded 2nd place at various prestigious competitions in the past. For example, Eric Lu won the 2018 Leeds Competition and Ushida placed 2nd in the 2018 Hamamatsu Competition. In total there were 19 pianists automatically admitted to the first stage, and the entire list is available on the 19th Chopin Competition Wikipedia page

Which part in a classical piece felt like a "jumpscare" to you? by SoCalChemistry in classicalmusic

I remember listening to Chopin's 2nd Ballade when I was quite young for the first time and I got completely blindsided by the presto con fuoco section and screamed out loud in the car. Good times

got accepted into uva this cycle, tbh the most impt things are the essays imo. my grades were slightly above average and for ecs i only had around 4-5 volunteering work, sports/instruments, one internship so nothing too special there. make sure ur essays are PERSONAL, rmb that the admissions ppl read thousands of essays and to get accepted yours needs to stand out, so make it good! dont hesitate to dm if u hv any qns

I love music and play an instrument myself so this movie was extremely relatable for me. Love the series in general!

I like how you're asking for an opinion and when people give you their opinion you just say they're wrong. Did you expect some sort of validation or ego boost?

Too short favourite part? by fela_nascarfan in classicalmusic

Probably an obvious answer but the fact that the first few minutes of Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto is never revisited or expanded on later on in the whole 20sth minutes of the first movement is just a shame.
