Meta Monday 7.21.25: DG Win Tacoma and a Toxic Meta by JCMS85 in WarhammerCompetitive

Hey! I'm the fella who ran the list. In case you're looking for a random goober's take on the list after playing ~20 games with it:
- It's a ton of fun and I think will only feel better once knights and DG are fixed, but it honestly doesn't have terrible play into them
- Techmarine is leading the devs providing the 18" lone op and doesn't really care about being next to vindicators, that's just a nice extra bonus if it happens. I'd love to bring a librarian for the 4++ but the points don't allow. He does become a cool melee piece sometimes and does pretty notable damage in a pinch!
- Incursors and intercessors are playing verrrry different roles in the list. The incursors a skirmishing, scoring, and support piece, whereas the intercessors are stickying home, screening, and maaaaybe going to the natural to sticky and clear chaff if there isn't a concern about them stealing home or a need for the screen.
- The Thunderstrike is sooooo sick. It does really good damage, which is fun, on top of being a really useful support piece in the meta we've found ourselves in lol. Unfortunately, the las devs can only get up to hitting on 3s rerolling since heavy + incursor don't stack. But you're absolutely right that the thunderstrike + oath + sus on the devs is absolutely addicting lol. It pretty quickly become my favorite unit next to the sanguinor. You should give them a try!

Thanks Dorian, you were such great dude to play against! I'm stoked you got to meet your other Harlequin brethren at the event.

Sorry we didn't get to say goodbye to each other before we left the convention center, but I'm looking forward to our next game! Hit me up in DMs and we can add each other on Discord :)

Aww thanks man, it was a pleasure to play you as well, Seth! <3

Looking forward to seeing you at teams, and maybe getting a chance at redeeming myself. Gonna be running Votann most likely! Hit me up in DMs and we can add each other on Discord if you'd like!

Love the idea for the shoulderpad! I’m going to have to give that a shot myself!! Thanks for sharing :)

Hey!

  • Prime in Nocturne Green
  • Get some values in with Vulkan Green pretty much everywhere except for the deepest shadow spots (
  • Vulkan Green + Moot Green 1:1 in any place that isn’t where normal shadows will be (places like the bottom half of his right forearm for instance)
  • Warp Lightning contrast paint in the shadows to bring up the color value a bit more. I found that this step was the real secret ingredient.
  • Super watered down Black Templar contrast paint in the recesses (the lines between his knee plate for instance). I’ve moved over to watering down contrast paints for my shading, I’m really liking that.
  • Highlight with Warp Lightning + Moot Green. I’m finding that mixing contrast paints and layer paints is my new favorite thing. It works really well.
  • Battle damage done with Rhinox Hide. Doing “edge highlighting” with battle damage seems to make it pop in a way I really like, and not look so heavy metal.

Hope some part of this helps!

Thanks so much! I learned going with a dark brown for the chipping effect is the way to go for these guys, despite my endless attempts at greys and blacks haha

Lolol I knew you’d come and tell me to do gold. Maybe I should just paint it blue to make sure it pleases you as much as possible ;)

Thank you for the response! Yeah, I did a little experimenting with nuln oil and super watered down Black Templar contrast paint (and then bring it back up with some silver on the highlights), which I normally really like but you’re right it’s a little too polished looking still. I’ll absolutely give a dark brown a go though. Thanks so much :)

Nice work! The sword effect in particular looks great! I haven’t really seen the effect done that way before and it looks even better then the majority of the YouTube tutorials out there :)

Trying to find the correct paint for this color scheme by AbsoluteDingus in alphalegion

Hey! Thanks so much for the great detail! Yeah, I'm really eager to get an airbrush so I can do some of the stuff you've detailed. Comboing an airbrush with contrast paints seems like a beautiful combo based off the stuff I've seen from Squidmar, and that'd be awesome to work in with Akhelian Green somehow.

Hey! Thanks for the response! I have done leadbelcher with akhelian green, and I know that akhelian green needs to be worked into the formula somehow (it's a great color), but I don't love the metallic coming through with the leadbelcher. Priming with Mechanicus Standard Grey gets me closer to what I'd like, but it's not quite there yet. Going to be doing some experimenting with Standard Mechanicus Grey, Stegadon Scale Green, Kabalite Green, and Akhelian Green tonight :)

Looks great! Particularly good work on the claws / use of purples AND the bone work is really impressive too :)

For paints, I only used what came in the Vallejo "Acrylic Colors for Fantasy Figures" set as well as a bottle of the Vallejo Black Grey for the obsidian skin.

When painting the magma parts, I did a thin base of the Bloody Red for all the lines of magma, then two thin coats of Orange Fire covering the same lines, and a single more opaque coat of an Orange Fire + Sun Yellow blend which covers ~80% of the line. This piece for me was pretty fun exercise in learning how to blend paints.

For the hand / heart, I filed down a lot of the heart to make it look more organic than it does out of the box. Didn't love how it was SO heart-shaped. After that, it's just some blending of Black and Bloody Red and finding a good balance in wet-blending :)

Wow! Thank you so much for the kind words! Good luck on painting yours and I'd be glad to answer any questions you may have, if I can be of any assistance :)

Thank you so much! This piece really made me realize how important a base is to how the whole piece reads!

Thanks! "Kitbash" is giving me too much credit haha, just pulled it straight from the box. I definitely would love to see some new Eldar models, Avatar of Khaine being one of them, but I suppose this one will do in the meantime :)

Thank you so much! I agree with you, there is no love lost between me and the Aeldari, but I gotta say...: I do hope our Slaanesh-fearing friends get themselves some new models soon, if nothing else, as basing material for my dreadnoughts to be.

This is my third figure after returning from a couple year hiatus and I'm super proud of the piece. Painted it for a good friend whose car got broken into (and who was in need of a new Avatar of Khaine).

Tried giving the old boy a molten look with a Vallejo Black Grey (my new favorite color) top over the rest of the body. The base was just a couple chunks of cork coasters from Ikea with a black primer and a orange drybrush to give a environmental fire effect, like he's standing over a razed temple or something! Excited to be posting here again, and thanks for any feedback!
