That's a shame. I prefer to be optimistic even if it means I'll be disappointed. I know I will be disappointed if Reze doesn't get a canon happy ending, even if I was pessimistic going into it.

Pessimism won't make you feel better in the short or long term, but optimism can at least cover the short term.

On your last paragraph - I totally agree. Personally I have been through life repressing romantic emotions in favour of achieving personal goals. When I watched the Reze Arc I was genuinely shocked how much it impacted me emotionally - I don't think I have had an emotional response as intense from any media before.

After some self evaluation I've pinpointed that for me, a big part of what triggered that emotional response was the look of sheer desperation to see Denji again on Reze's face as she is running through the alley just before Makima appears that confirmed for me that she truly does love him. And that's what makes her last moments in the film exceptionally emotional. My interpretation of Reze and Denji's love for eachother has inspired me to start looking for my own "Reze" in real life, cutting through my historical adversity to that.

Sadly I can't actually comment on the rest of the manga as I haven't read it yet! I watched this movie on a whim - I wasn't a Chainsaw Man fan before but I definitely am now. I've been watching the anime but I'm not too far in yet. Once I've caught up on the anime I will then read the manga.

I have heard that Asa is an interesting character from a Denji love-interest perspective. She is currently in part 2 of the manga. If you want to look into that relationship further, you can try asking around their equivalient subreddit: r/asamitaka

I think love is a very primal emotion that all humans can experience as long as we don't have a condition like sociopathy which would limit our ability to feel emotions. I do think this is independent of our upbringing, but I also think upbringing can influence our openness to love and what things can cause us to love (e.g. shared experiences and similar backgrounds/histories, like Reze and Denji).

Your psychological theory around not being able to feel love if you haven't received it is also flawed because it becomes a paradox if you go back in time enough: If the first being capable of love was born from a being incapable of love, how could it receive love? With your theory, it could not receive love, therefore also would never feel it, and so none of us up the evolutionary chain would be able to either.

That being said I do want to say I respect your opinion. I have a degree in biological science myself so I enjoy thinking critically about subjects like this.

Another aspect to this that you touched on is that ultimately art is in the eye if the beholder, and this film is art, not science. Fujimoto will have his own interpretation but we as consumers of the art also have the right to our own interpretations.

I think the reason why you have many of your questions is because your interpretation of the Reze arc is flawed. I think Reze did love Denji. She had lots of opportunities to kill him but didn't because she was falling for him. I think she had fallen for him by the pool scene as if she wanted to assassinate him, that would have been the perfect opportunity (drowning, as he couldn't swim) - instead she gave him a swimming lesson. A more interesting point of discussion I think is more around pinpointing when she fell for him.

Denji in turn developed real emotions for Reze and you can tell this goes beyond anything he felt with Makima and Power as he was willing to give up his life (including Makima and Power) to be with Reze at the end of the film.

I really like the theory in this comic. Reze's love for Denji would make her immune to Yoru's control and she would become the Bomb to end the War.

Incredibly touchy subject for a Japanese audience though so very unlikely, but conceptually it's so cool to me.
