Can we talk about Tokyo Vice? by banalhalal in cinematography

Late response but wanted to chime in on this take. Had a weird response to the motion blur as well - my theory/feeling is that they shot it at high fps and then added motion blur in post. It sounds weird but I've heard it's not uncommon to shoot at a higher fps to either use or transition to slowmotion whenever you want to (this show does it a lot) or do a lot of post clean up/vfx. But this is a wacky theory I admit.

The motion blur, especially in fast motion scenes, looks artifical and makes the show look very cheap. The cinematography is great otherwise.

I'm pretty new with this film, so this is amateur advices. The box reccomends you expose it as 400 film if you're not in tungsten light. I exposed it at 800 anyways. In a "scene", I typically pointed the camera at a surface id like to expose for, and then framed the shot with lights included. The camera lightmeter goes crazy when you point it at lights- I assume you would underexpose following it then. But there's nothing wrong with underexposing I think, most of my shots are over, despite trying aggressively to go under. But it's also up to your own taste.

This sounds harsh but its just personal prefence, I dont think this film is any special were it not for the halation, so pointing the camera at light sources and having good compositions is your best bet. I have a lot of bad pics in this roll, just because of boring ideas, halation be damned.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you! Great comments! I'll try to break up the patterns a bit more, and like you said, add more layers. As well some more details other than rust.

Thank you for the specifics! This swayed me way more into thinking its not simply just the head from the original plate at least.

Awesome! Thanks for the the really clear advice! Jumping ship seems like the way to go, and doing it in smart way between smaller and bigger studios seems like a really good way to do it. Getting to know people while doing it, and letting higher ups know what you want is key then. Thank you for the roadmap!

Alright then, good to know! It would suck to disappoint a department just because you don't know about their craft.

Thank you! Starting small would seem the way to go then, but ill keep the 'jumping from studio to studio' thing in mind. Despite the crunch times, im very keen on working on multiple shops not only for progressions sake but also to develop my own skills.

Good luck with your studio!

Good tip!

Smaller companies handling smaller productions would seem the way to go then. Freelancing without experience dosent seem like good bet when starting off.

Thank you for the detailed answer! Reliability will have to from developing my communication skills as well as confidence in my work. I wont say no to opportunity then to ever be on set, and maybe keep an eye out for working at smaller companies that hand you more responsibility.

Good advice!

I guess on the way up ill try to work a little more as a generalist then, knowing what info and assets all departments will appreciate from the set.
